I found the table on Craigslist for $25. Refinished the dilapidated top and painted the base from white to black.
After talking close to a weeks break, on Kaelri's idea, I have come up with Thee organic desktop.

Another desktop dedicated to my faveourite band Sigur Ros, wallpaper is from deviantart
rainmeter is all kaelris enigma slightly modified
with Etom icons
and smudged handwriting font
made the bottom bar by deleting the images from enigma launcher menu so that only cons show
and making a copy so that i can have 10 icons instead of 5
top bar is gaia 09 with amana shortcut icons
im not too keen on gaia but its the only decent vista skin ive found that doesnt change open office black, which i need to be in white
dont think ill stick around with this so off to rainthemes folder it goes until i can find some better sigur ros wallpapers
who knows how or when it started, but i'm a color-coder note taker.
blue and black are "primary text" colors and are used relatively interchangeably, switching occasionally to help break up a page. e.g. on a full page of notes a blue to black transition might indicate a switch in topic. green typically indicates "something of interest" and red, of course, is used to highlight to-dos. color-coding is such a simple way to improve your notes ( indeed, it often makes lists like lifehacker's "five classic ways to boost your note-taking" ) that i'm surprised at how many weird looks i get from people who don't have any idea why i carry multiple colors of pens in to meetings. and more than a few folks have said they think it's just a bit dorky to be color coding notes after the sixth grade.
"pfffffft", i say. carrying around 4 pens is not dorky, it's a sign of an advanced note taker.
amusingly, someone who knows my love of color-coding recently gave me a classic 4-color retractable ballpoint pens, but i can't quite bring myself to use it because, well, it's a little dorky, no?
so, which is dorkier, carrying 4 different pens or one retractable ballpoint?
Submitting this to Lifehacker's show and tell here on flickr. :) My current Android desktop in celebration of the new HTC Incredible 2 phone that I got!

All the little icons are my bookmarked links. Since I know the icons for most of the sites, I right click on the link after dragging it there, go into the Properties and delete the Name to make room for more icons. fuzzy by accident - but that's great - it is the general idea that matters!
My friends held hands like the monks do in Asia and laughing, said -" take a picture - Buddhists holding hands - it's ok to be gay - either way - doesn't matter!"
Since this is my work laptop I keep it simple. (Now that I think about it, I keep it simple all the time.)

I'm trying a new calendar setup until I nail down a good cloud based one. The sticky notes on the desk all mark a single day, tasks are added and the note goes in my pocket on the way to work.

If you were to line up all the pics of our kids playing the piano that made their way onto pages like this Likfehacker article, you might get the idea they were always at the keyboard.

well, shows how much my desktop has changed according to my new tastes.
(gosh my old desk's were ugly!)
my first attempt with Rainmeter and Enigma (hope I spelled that right) on the last screen.
to view this in all it's detailed glory of my clutter-to-clean transition, click here.
I'm a programmer, so for me screen space is king. I run KDE on gentoo linux with a dual screen and 6 virtual desktops. I tend to run windows maximised, and each desktop has a basic function. The important things for me are keeping up to date with information and communication.
Desktop 1: I use Kontact (KDE PIM) to keep track of email/mailing lists, aggregate my rss feeds, hold all my contacts, and maintain a todo list.
Desktop 2: Two Konsole terminals with numerous tabs live here for compiling and other maintenance. Sometimes I run a second instance of Kdevelop here if I'm working on two projects concurrently.
Desktop 3: I do most of my programming here, the main Kdevelop window occupies the left screen, and the Assistant lives on the right screen to display documentation and API's.
Desktop 4: Xchat lives here for all my ircing needs.
Desktop 5: All browser windows get sent here, I have a session saving instance of Firefox permanently open for pages that I need, quick browsing tends to get done in a number of Konqueror windows/tabs I open on demand.
Desktop 6: amaroK lives here for all my music needs. A more perfect tricked out music player can't be found. Global shortcuts rock.
Miscellaneous: Kopete is my instant messaging client, Kget my download manager. BasKet (http://basket.kde.org) is a handy little tool that I use as a second todo list, and to hold any snippets of information that I might need.
I can access any desktop directly via the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F# where # is the desktop I want, or I can move left or right through desktops with Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right.
Via Lifehacker I found a howto on Anna the Red's blog on how to transform ordinary radishes into Super Mario Power-up mushrooms.
Now I don't know if this will make kids enjoy radishes more to eat, but they sure like to look at them.
Here's Anna the Red's howto. Many warnings about do not cut yourself etc here. But this is actually easier than it looks and is explained. Go mad, make your own mushroom kingdom :-)
Also check out Anna's bento sets here on Flickr. Amazing work!

I haven't added anything to my desktop. I have only minimalized my previous. Check out my previous desktop for answers as to what is what. If you still have questions feel free to ask.
As usual, thanks to Kaelri for Enigma 2.0 and for inspiration on my Firefox browser.
It sounds easy. "Let's offer blogs to our community." But there are hazards that lurk beneath the groovy social software veneer:
* Spammers never sleep
* Workload for training and support - many users will have only a vague idea how to use these tools. Imagine the risks with students required to maintain weblogs.
* Server and application maintenance - many IT units in academic institutions have little understanding or interest in sustaining tools such as these.
Key questions:
* What are the benefits of providing a blog service, when anyone can easily get their own blog elsewhere?
* Could a school offer a weblog service without hosting? What other services would be needed?
* What are the appropriate expectations of users of these services? What can reasonably be provided to them?
* Just how amenable is the culture of the academy to blogging and other social software practices?
* Are there special challenges in dealing with (ahem) 'academic temperaments' and technology? (Hint: you better believe it!)

Macro Mondays 12/21/09 - DIY: It's not photoshop, just pure DIY snowflake bokeh… Taken from Lifehacker:
lifehacker.com/5142551/create-your-own-bokeh-for-beautifu...
Ingredients:
1) cutout lens cap - cutout any shape you want (about 2'' in diameter depending on how wide open you can go). For this one I cutout a single snowflake, but have done the heart version here:
www.flickr.com/photos/mrpatrick/4199768369/
2) cutout lens hood - you need to make a ring about 1'' deep
3) tape - attach the cap and hood
4) Fast Glass - I used my Nikon 50mm 1.4. Attach the hood/cap to the lens and shoot wide open.
5) Lights - I put christmas lights in the background to induce these bokehiful snowflakes.
Typography gift wrapping! This is a great technique for one or two gifts (like for a birthday). But for Christmas? Ugh. I won't do it again.

This is one of three bookshelves. It is also one of my most important areas of my apartment. All of my major reading and serious intellectual work happens here in a 100 year old chair I found dirt cheap and had recovered in black corduroy.

Download Link: www.sendspace.com/file/by0rk6
Uses this font:
www.fontspace.com/roger-white/swansea
(any Helvetica font will do, really)
Requirements:
1) Rainmeter
2) A 1920x1200 Monitor
Optional:
3) Twitter Account
4) Last.fm Account
5) You enjoy knowing the weather.
6) You drink.
7) You have a hard drive full of high-res pictures of beautiful women.
8) In that case, I recommend GIMP, or Photoshop--touch up the images and resize accordingly. I've provided 15 images to get you started.
Install:
1) Add the required lines to your Rainmeter.ini, unless you enjoy having the pretty pictures appearing above everything else.
2) Fill out the fields you want inside the INIs.
3) Boot 'er up, make sure you're in 1920x1200.
4) The Images folder contains M (model) and S (small). It's pretty easy to figure out, having the raw images is the hard part.
Thanks:
projectvirus--for awesome moral support + flipclock code
Lifehacker--for connecting me to such a talented community
Kaelri--for giving me all the basic code I needed--I just customized it.
Ranting:
I don't know how much more time I'm going to spend on this project. It's probably still buggy, but it works okay on my end.
This is my first Rainmeter skin (it's essentially my attempt to reverse-engineer Enigma), and I've relearned Regex, so I call it a victory.
Now where's my freaking cake?
I bought this at Edward's Luggage: a pocket leather notepad and business card holder, with pen. It is more efficient and portable than any PDA. It costs less than $20 and Edward's Luggage even sells replacement notepads.
