Decoration of cute room.

Low prim furniture is very convenient.

I love furniture.

I spend my holiday with my cats in this room.🐈😸👩😸🐈

I was making goofy faces at the camera, and then of course it was all "oh no I am NOT taking this picture cause it's out of focus or something that I deem essential for a photo"

and I was all like "oooh NO you don't!! argh!! Like some microchip knows a damn thing about what I want in my photo!! Just take the stupid..."

It was hard to resist taking several pictures of this young woman: she seemed so clean-cut, attractive, and well dressed as she stood in the square while chatting on her cell phone.

She then marched back and forth several paces, then went into the entrance to the 72nd Street subway station, came back out again, marched around, continued chattering on her cell phone, and occasionally glanced at me with a puzzled look as I snapped several pictures. A good ten minutes went by until she finally disappeared for good into the subway station, still chattering away on her cell phone...

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

got tired of my old setup. and i wanted to try "layers" screenshot app.

My thoughts of this setup were focused on using the available screensize, somewhat limited on the eee ;)

So i removed(hide) the std Dock. replaced it with dragthing. there are 4 of them visible in this shot. As with my old screenshot i have a mail-notifier-dock-thing (hidden in this shot). I have also trimmed down the Process Dock(a feature of dragthing) to show just the icons i want.. or have a need to see.. also due to the limited size.

Background:

I got a little inspired by a lifehacker-shot that had a starwars-inspired background

so i whipped together this background from a super-class stardestroyer picture i found.

iPulse

i wanted something that was starwars-y so i had to fix it .. and i did :D

Still got to fix:

a pop up calendar in some way. dont want it in the menubar. anyone got ideas ? Prefrebly something i can change fonts and such ..

still waiting for someone to solve the mystery of the black text in the batteryicon.

Font used in dragthing and fuzzyclock:

Hooray x 2 Lifehacker & Gizmodo!!!!!!! Reading the comments from many of the viewers on lifehacker, on my Graffiti Desktop, a lot of people were saying that they would rather have everything easier to read so I came up with this idea lol. I thought of a way to blend the information into the background yet still have it easily read. All of the text bubbles have information such as CPU, RAM, Uptime, To Do List, Hard drive Space, and others all with Geektool. I created the desktop background in photoshop so if you would like me to post it just let me know. The dock is hidden in the bottom right corner. If you have any questions I'll gladly answer to the best of my capabilities. The os x taskbar is changed with Magnifique using the UNO-AE theme

I designed my office to be as unobtrusive as possible, to be an uncluttered work space, a guest house that keeps 'em coming back, and an inspired meditation room. It has a green roof so when we see the structure from the house it fits into the forest.

When I started as a graphic designer back in the early 90s the equipment we used necessitated a much larger space. The first system for the business was a Mac Ci, then it was one tower after another, light tables, laser printers, scanners, backup drives, and all that. A few years ago I realized that my laptop and iPhone were all I really needed to run my end of our customer experience consultancy. I could give up my big office and work within a small cube...a cube with a view.

Central Park, south end - 004

Between roughly 86th Street and 90th Street, the inner-loop roadway runs parallel to one side of the Central Park reservoir; and just to the east of the roadway is a bridle path, where you'll occasionally encounter New Yorkers determined to ride their horses ... so, when walking along the bridle path, looking east (with Fifth Avenue and the Upper East Side in the background), you frequently see scenes like this one, as joggers go hurtling past...

These pictures were taken during a 3-hour Labor Day stroll through Central Park -- starting on the west side of the park at 96th Street, and walking around the south end, and back up the east side to 72nd Street.

It was a warm, sunny day, and there were people everywhere -- bicycling, skating, walking, picnicking, sunbathing, frisbee-throwing ... and even getting married. It appears that everyone was enjoying themselves, on this final day of the summer season in New York City...

I've strolled through Riverside Park on several previous occasions (click here to see a collection of approximately seven other Flickr albums of my Riverside Park photos) -- but even though the sign at the 96th Street entrance is always the same, and the pathway is always the same, the people and the individual vignettes are always different.

Sometimes it's simply a function of the weather: people dress differently, act differently, and are engaged in different activities in early spring than they do in summer or late fall. But much of it simply has to do with the incredible variety of people who take advantage of the opportunity to relax, read a book, jog, or picnic with their families.

So ... this just happens to be what it looked like in Riverside Park on the last day of May, in 2009.

So I handed down to my sister the old MICKE desk.

I got a second HELMER drawer chest, and used it with my old white one as legs for a 120cm x 60cm VIKA AMON desk surface.

About a month ago, I had seen an article somewhere in Lifehacker or so, about the easy LACK+RIBBA desk elevator thing.

So I got the LACK shelf I had, placed two RIBBA frames on the desk and aligned it on top of them. The iMac is heavy enough to keep it sturdy, but I try not to move everything around. Nothing is screw-driven, whatsoever.

Contrary to what you might think, New Yorkers do not eat all of their meals at Starbucks or pizza joints. Nor do they buy all of their food at supermarkets or corner delis.

We also buy our food at farmer's markets, where organically grown fruits, vegetables, cheese, and other items are brought from farms in nearby New Jersey and upstate New York. Some of these are large and noisy, some specialize in ethnic foods; and some operate every day, with great fanfare and publicity.

But then there are the neighborhood farmer's markets, many of which operate only one day a week. In my neighborhood, it's Fridays mornings: on 97th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus, you can find an assortment of beans and beets, tomatoes and potatoes, carrots and garlic, peaces and cucumbers.

These photos will give you an idea of the kind of food that many of us are lucky enough to enjoy...

As I indicated when I started this project in 2008, I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

Thus far, I've generally avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless people.

Just... love for the victims, love for their families, love for LGBTIQ+ people and Latinxs everywhere who live with this hate every day, and love for the many kind and innocent Muslims (or people who "look" Muslim) who will further be singled out and targeted as terrorists due to this. I'm too heartbroken to think of much else to say.

some things we can do to help

Here's the finished curtains I made out of Kodachrome slides! The slides date from the 50s and early 60s, and are all from a lot of slides I got in Kansas City last fall. The majority of slides on the right panel are of horses. Go figure. Travis drilled 8 holes in the slides using a Dremel tool in a Dremel drill press thingy, and I connected them all using aluminum chainmail rings.

Hey, this made Flickr Explore! Woot!

Holy crap, now this is on Lifehacker and Make and Craft and Craftster! Double woot! I have the most famous curtains on the internets. :)

In response to the whole "Won't it fade?" question, I'm pretty sure that yes, in time, the slides (especially the ones in direct sunlight) will fade. I don't know how long they'll last. If it happens in the next week or so, I'll let you know. :) Hopefully, they'll last a year or so. I have a ton of old slides, so as they fade, I can just replace them with others. That won't be any big deal. I think if this was on a north-facing window, the slides will fade a lot slower. Also, I scanned in the most interesting slides, so in case the slides to fade to nothingness, the image is still preserved.

---------------------

Fifth update - After 5 months, the images don't look like they've faded at all.

Fourth update - I finally went ahead and banned the guy who had been arguing with me in the comments. So, if you're reading through the comments and things seem like they're missing, that's why. If you're curious about what was said, just Flickrmail me and I'll paraphrase. I just want to make it clear that this particular user has been blocked not because of anything he said, but because he continued to infringe on the copyright to this photo after repeated requests that he not do so. I'm cool with someone disagreeing with me; I'm not cool with theft.

Third update! - I wrote an epically long, self indulgent blog post about the whole "You must preserve history!" angst that's gone on in the comments. You can read it here: yarnzombie.net/craft/?p=194

Another update! I made a lamp out some of the leftover slides. It's here if you want to check it out: www.flickr.com/photos/yarnzombie/4366892426/

*Update!* 2-17-10 www .roadsideonline .com , who has been arguing with me in the comment section, has stolen this picture without permission to use on his own site.

My home office in Brooklyn. At night you see the Manhattan skyline lit up which is a great view to daydream (or is it nightdream?) at. I like to keep things simple and clean.

** Update:

I've cleaned.. looking back, this office was a mess! I've stripped down to the bare minimal and here's a new photo of the office at night:

The young woman here is beautiful, and I love the reflection of the keyboard in her sunglasses ... but I gotta tell ya: the combination of grass and green-glow on the back of her laptop is out of this world. I have to admit that I used some color saturation to pump up the colors a little ... but not much. This photograph made itself: I just happened to be in the right place, at the right time, to point my camera in the right direction and push the shutter-button...

I've spent the past few months figuring out how to scale down many of the things i don't need and keeping my home office very minimal. That included ditching the large 30" apple cinema display (it blocked my view out the windows!) and going back to a simple laptop with two headless servers (on old G5 osx server pictured, and one ubuntu dual core 2.8ghz hp proliant server hidden behind the desk)

I've hidden my speakers behind the desk and stream via an airport express station to minimize cord plugins. The two cables visible below the desk have been hidden (ethernet for the osx server and some other cable) didn't see them in the photo til it was too late.

I've purchased an all-in-one scanner/printer that fits comfortably in the sliding glass door cabinet for easy access.

My old and faithful aeron chair finally made it's return home from vermont. Thank you for the gift adam, it's lasted me years!

For white board drawings, i use dry erase markers on the glass windows. I make sure i don't write any sensitive data on them as they're clearly visible from the street :)

This provides maximum desk space to work with while not being distracted. i work from home occasionally (i'm a senior linux systems engineer for mtv networks/viacom) so i wanted someplace enjoyable to work without losing focus on my tasks.

I didn't have any stones to put in the vase for the flower, so i ended up using all the silver change i could find. This works great because it looks interesting, but also makes it easy to ditch extra pocket change into it conveniently. No pennies allowed!

Ha, ha, ha, ...

Be happy, it is Wednesday :-)

Sonríe, ya es miércoles :-)

My little Canon Ixus 55/PowerShot SD450 still works. And much better now that I can save the RAW.

RAW, yes RAW :-) Check it at: lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-point+and+shoot-into-a-su...

This photo is part of a DIY How To over at curbly.com. It has also recently featured on Lifehacker. You may have recognized it from the Halloween photo set, as it pulls double duty for the voting on the best costumes.

These pictures were taken during a trip to Rome in Jun 2008, where I presented a 2-day seminar on "Web 2.0".

I noticed this couple, sitting on the railing that separates the vehicular roadway from the pedestrian part of the Piazza del Popolo. I couldn't tell if they were arguing, engaged in a who-blinks-first? contest, or just having a thoughtful conversation...

I can't help wondering if this couple had any idea how many people would look at their picture (a little over 14,000 as of January 2012), and how many different bizarre blog postings -- well over a hundred, at this point, from all over the world -- would use the image of their conversation to illustrate their message. To see all the places where the photo has been published (at least, all of the ones that I'm aware of), see below...

I had an appointment to meet someone on Central Park West and 66th Street (essentially across the street from the famous "Tavern on the Green" restaurant), and -- as usual -- arrived half an hour early. So I sat on a park bench, and watched a wide spectrum of humanity walk, stroll, and ride past me. Tourists, students, babysitters, friends, lovers, bicycle-powered messengers, retired people, and joggers moved past me, usually paying no attention to me at all...

I had my camera on my lap, pointed more-or-less straight ahead, with the zoom set to an 18mm wide-angle setting. With a couple of exceptions (including this photo), I didn't bother aiming, focusing, or even raising the camera to my eye; if the picture looked like it might be interesting, I just pressed the shutter button at the appropriate moment.

I took three or four pictures of this man as he navigated slowly across 66th Street on Central Park West (just behind where this picture was taken), stopping every few feet to catch his breath. When he reached a tree that's just out of sight on the right side of this picture, he decided to put his arm out and rest a while longer; you can see that in the previous picture of this sequence ...

Seeing his condition, a very nice couple approached him and asked if they could help walk him to the bus-stop, which was about twenty feet further ahead (indeed, you can see the approaching bus in the background). They helped him onto the bus, and then walked away...

And, yes, I did notice the reaction of the woman on the left side of the picture: I felt that she was demonstrating the reaction that all of us would have felt if we were there, in person, to witness this little vignette of humanity...

********************,

Note: on Oct 3, 2009 I made some minor edits to this photo. Primarily, I decreased the extent of shadows in the coat worn by the woman on the left, so you could see more details. There were a few other "hot spots" and "cold spots" throughout the photo that I was able to adjust, too. And I made a modest increase in the color saturation of the faces of all four individuals, as well as increasing the vibrancy of non-skin-tone colors. I do think it helps to be able to see more details of the woman's dark raincoat, but aside from that, none of these "tweaks" are particularly germane to the main emphasis of the photo...

UPDATE: Nice, featured on Lifehacker!

UPDATE: Now on Engadget!

Late in the afternoon on the last day in March 2009, I walked into Bryant Park, which is located behind the New York Public Library, between 41st and 42nd Street, facing Avenue of the Americas. There were several people reading and basking in the sun, a couple people typing on their laptop computers, and one chess game underway. I spent about half an hour wandering around to see what looked photo-worthy, and then wandered off to get some dinner...

This woman was typing away on a laptop computer ... alas, it was not an Apple Powerbook. But maybe she doesn't know any better. Just think: if she had been typing on a Mac, her photo probably would have been published a thousand times by now!

LINKS DISCUSSION THREADS IN SEVERAL E-ZINES

lifehacker.com/5857093/the-library-workspace

"The Library Workspace. Never let anyone tell you that organization can't be beautiful. Today's featured workspace, from Flickr user iBSSR, makes an entire wall of shelving its centerpiece. Filled with colorful books and decorative items, it makes for both a practical and attractive home office.

The wall-based bookcase was designed by architect Huib van Wijk and looks like a somewhat large undertaking, but the results are beautiful. If you like this, you'll want to check out the other smaller wall bookcase as well, November 7, 2011".

unclutterer.com/2011/10/28/workspace-of-the-week-dutch-de...

"Workspace of the Week: Dutch details. This week’s (October 28, 2011) Workspace of the Week is iBSSR’s minimalist Mac office space: This selection is located in a minimalist house recently built in Parkstad Heerlen, the Netherlands. (It’s in the southern Limburg province of the Netherlands.) The name of the house is “Minimum to the Max,” which I believe also aptly describes the feel of this room. In the desk and workspace area, there are only computers, desks, task lighting, and chairs. Likely, when the space is in use, there are also project materials strewn about the desks. However, at the end of the day, all items are put away and stored on the bookcase. The bookcase is built into the wall and was part of the original design of the home. Without the bookcase, the space would feel empty or impersonal. With the bookcase, the space transforms into an inspiring studio that can provide clarity and creativity. The long window that runs along the wall opposite of the bookshelf is also nice for bringing natural light into the space. Thank you, iBSSR, for sharing your minimalist space with us, October 28, 2011".

"Bibliophilia: Combining Library with Home Office. It's natural to try and combine rooms when you haven't got enough space, but many people use their home office as an ad hoc library to store their books. Granted, sometimes they end up in piles near a desk, but books are something that bibliophiles love, so they are worth making the effort to store them adequately. In order to maximize your storage space, we recommend getting wall to wall bookcases or shelves. You will be able to find some that fit standard rooms, but anything higher than the norm will most probably require something custom-made (images: Flickr member iBSSR), November 10, 2011".

People say that you have clearer thought patterns when there is less around you. Others say you just need a clean, minimal workspace. Well it comes down to personal preference and what type of person you are in the end. Some people like to have a messy work area and others totally hate it when there is anything out of place. Minimalism has grown a lot over the past few years when it comes to the workplace and I’d love to see it grow even more, October 25, 2011.

See LifeHacker:

lifehacker.com/learn-the-basics-of-color-theory-to-know-w...

This is the basic color wheel and it will guide you in making color choices. You’ve probably seen it in school, but here’s a quick refresher just in case you’ve forgotten.

Red, blue and yellow are primary colors. When you mix red and yellow, you get orange; mix blue and yellow, you get green; mix red and blue, you get violet. Orange, green and violet are hence called secondary colors. Tertiary colors like red-violet and blue-violet are derived by mixing a primary color with a secondary color.

All colors have tints and shades. A tint is the variation of that color when mixed with white; a shade is the variation of that color when mixed with black. But generally, you don’t need to worry about tints and shades for basic color schemes, says Color Wheel Pro:

According to color theory, harmonious color combinations use any two colors opposite each other on the color wheel, any three colors equally spaced around the color wheel forming a triangle, or any four colors forming a rectangle (actually, two pairs of colors opposite each other). The harmonious color combinations are called color schemes – sometimes the term ‘color harmonies’ is also used. Color schemes remain harmonious regardless of the rotation angle.

In the color wheel, there’s yet another separation that you need to be aware of so that you can understand color schemes better: warm and cool colors. Each has its own purpose to convey emotions. Warm colors exhibit energy and joy (best for personal messages), while cool colors convey calmness and peace (best for office use). The wheel itself can be divided easily to get an idea of which colors are warm and which ones cool, as demonstrated by Kissmetrics:

This woman was sitting at an outdoor table of a small restaurant/coffee-shop on the west side of Columbus Avenue at 73rd Street. It's the first time that I've seen anyone in this particular area (which is near a gym that I usually visit 2-3 times a week) with a laptop, and I was delighted to see that she had a Mac.... and not just any old Mac, but a Mac Powerbook. (But not a MacBook Air :) )

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them. A house without books is like a room without windows.

To be or not to be, that is the question. Old, real books versus eBooks: Which wins? Do you use an e-book? If so, which one? Let me know.

Thank you, iBSSR, for sharing your minimalist space with us".

Exploring the workplace: the library as a wall shelf, a proposal

Storage space turns into a beautiful wall DESIGN BY Huib van Wijk, November 24, 2011.

Featured Desktop: Lightning at Sunset

How To: Roll Your Own Lightning at Sunset Desktop

This is a minor update to my previous desktop. As before, every bit of software in the shot is freeware, sans only the copy of Photoshop used to put it together.

Mouseover the icons on the left for a description of the new additions, D-Color and Xentient Thumbnails. The rest, as listed before:

Theme:

- SlanXP 2.0. Requires patched uxtheme.dll - patcher here.

- Wallpaper: "lightning in sunset" by ddoi.

Startups:

- Autohotkey. See the note in the upper-right corner.

- Launchy. My beloved.

- Yod'm 3D 1.4. Last free version before it became Deskspaces. Probably the closest thing to Compiz Fusion you can get for Windows.

- Taskbar Shuffle. I swear, it's worth it just for middle-clicking to close windows.

- Start Killer.

Programs usually running:

- Samurize. I made the config myself, which you're welcome to download here in a few different resolutions.

- Google Desktop. Solely for the gadgets.

I've added a few other details as notes. And I'd be happy to answer any questions. I love talking about this stuff.

UPDATE: Much thanks to Lifehacker for the featured article. :) As requested by some of the commenters over there, here follows a brief tutorial on getting this setup for your PC.

Theme. Download the above Uxtheme.dll Patcher. You'll have to restart your computer; do so. Then, download "SlanXP2.msstyles", and run it; Windows will know what to do. Customize it however you want (I use the third color scheme). Hit Apply. You may want to keep the ".msstyles" file in a safe place; I placed a copy with my other themes in "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes".

I'm sure most of you know how to move the taskbar to the top of the screen.

Launchy. I love Launchy so very much. Download, install and run it. The default hotkey to access it is Alt+Space, but I use Win+Z. Right-click to access options. From here, there are so many ways to go that I'm just going to refer you to Lifehacker's numerous articles on customizing Launchy. But the gist is this: use the hotkey to bring it up. Start typing what you're looking for, until Launchy finds it, then hit Enter to run it. The more you use it, the more Launchy will learn what you use most often, and you'll have to type less and less. By default, it will index your Start Menu, Control Panel, and bookmarks, so feel free to get rid of those application icons on your desktop. Just go for it. Go!

Yod'm3D. This is actually a portable application, meaning you don't have to install it. Extract the folder from the ZIP you downloaded to somewhere safe, like "C:\Program Files". Manually add a shortcut to "Yodm3d.exe" in your Start Menu. Run it, and right-click the tray icon to open options.

I kept most of the defaults. I enabled "Auto turn cube when window move out of screen." I also disabled the tray icon (you can access options without it just by launching the shortcut again). In the Mouse tab, I enabled the bottom two corners for activation, with a delay of 250ms. In Zoom, I have the following numbers down the side: 0.00, 1.00, 1.00, 0.00, 0.12, 0.10.

To use it, just move your mouse to either bottom corner of the screen, which should suddenly become a translucent cube. To rotate it, click and drag, or just use the arrow keys. To select the face you're centered on, middle-click or press Enter. Using the numbers I gave you, it won't zoom at all by default, but if you want to zoom out a bit and visualize the whole cube, press the Up arrow. Yod'm can remember a different wallpaper for each desktop, but you have to set it through the Display dialogue.

D-Color. This one's pretty self-explanatory. Download, install, run. Right-click the tray icon to select the icon style you want (tiles, in my case). Click "Configure" to customize the text color; I just have white text and a transparent background. (No shadows, annoyingly, which means this works best with a darkish background.)

Taskbar Shuffle. Another easy one. Download, install, run. As noted above, I don't even really care about moving the window tabs around; I keep this around because it lets me middle-click to close windows. You will be amazed at how much you miss it on other computers. I disabled the tray icon with this one; as with Yod'm, you can just run the program shortcut again to bring it back.

StartKiller. Even easier. Download, install, run. Start button is gone. Done. (You can still access the start menu using the windows key button, or Ctrl-Esc.)

Google Desktop. Download, install, run. If I recall, it will open a browser window for you to start setting options. With Launchy, I have no need for GD's primary function, desktop search, so I went through and disabled every option I could find related to indexing. When you're done with this, right-click the tray icon and select "Sidebar." Said object should promptly appear on the side of your desktop, if it hadn't already. On the top, click the middle of the three corner buttons, with the triangle. Select "Auto-hide," then "Add gadgets" to browse Google's immense library of widgets. Once they're added to your sidebar, you can click and drag to pull them onto the desktop in whatever arrangement you like. Now, you can just tap the "Shift" key twice to hide or reveal them, ala Dashboard.

Samurize. Samurize is the one program here with a bit of a learning curve, particularly because my config doesn't fit all resolutions by default. Samurize's website has a good comprehensive tutorial. For more information, see Lifehacker's How To article on this desktop.

Basic instructions for this config are included in the download. I provided for a few different resolutions, mainly on request; I'm working on a way to make it auto-conform to any resolution, so keep an eye on this post.

Autohotkey. Download, install. You can run the program if you want to look at a sample script, but all you really have to do is create a new ".ahk" file somewhere safe (mine's in My Documents). You can create a start menu shortcut to the "whatever.ahk" file itself; it will launch Autohotkey with that file, or "script," and to edit it, you can right-click the tray icon. When you're done editing, save the file, right-click the tray icon again, and click "Reload script."

As for what you actually put into your script, you have free reign. Autohotkey's website has a tutorial to get you familiar with the format. I'll give you a few examples that I use regularly - in fact, you can copy and paste these if you want.

#f:: Run firefox.exe

; Win+F launches Firefox.

#+n:: Run notepad++

#2:: WinSet, Transparent, 217, A

First off, if this seems complicated, it's because IT IS. The makers of geektool never promised otherwise (for now). Hopefully these notes will enlighten you a bit.

Tutorial Ian Michael Smith: lifehacker.com/5731409/the-sands-of-time-desktop

Inspired by Ian Michael Smith: www.flickr.com/photos/40156273@N06/

I was walking south along the bridle path that circumnavigates the reservoir in Central Park; and the view here is basically south, with the CitiCorp building and various other New York City skyscrapers in the background. The reservoir is enclosed by a fence (presumably to keep people from falling in, or jumping in to swim, or perhaps even attempting to fish), and there's a jogging trail that runs along the fence; so scenes like this are pretty common.

I hadn't taken the sun into account when I took this picture; during this season, it's pretty far south, and for whatever reason, it left the runner in pretty dark shadow. I tweaked it a bit, and hopefully didn't distort the background too badly. I also replaced the grayish-white hazy sky with a bluish gradient fill, using Adobe Photoshop Elements ...

Having seen this Photoshopped color version of this photograph, my instructor in a March 2009 street photography class suggested that I convert it to black-and-white to accentuate the vertical shapes of the fence behind the runner. I did so here on Flickr, using Apple's Aperture program, and with a yellow filter applied to the initial image.

I think the result is interesting, and I'll try to keep an open mind for a while before deciding whether I like it better than the color version. However, if you have strong opinions one way or the other, I'd enjoy hearing it; leave me Flickr-mail or email me at ed at yourdon dot com

So glad to have a window seat.

An updated version of my workspace overlooking Manhattan. The next piece to replace in this new workspace are my speakers. Any beautifully designed speaker suggestions are welcome.
