It's a little embarrassing that I've never seen this species of warbler before today. However, persistence always seems to pay off. This little macgillivray's warbler put on a show for me. What a treat!

FIFTEEN Warning sign of things to come

(Tristan comes out of the bedroom clad in loose sweats, yawning and smiling.)

Tristan:

I smell something delicious. (he goes to Mari in the kitchenette, kissing her neck)

Mari:

(smiles) Pancakes and bacon wake you?

Tristan:

I meant YOU. (playfully nibbles her neck) Delicious!

Mari:

(laughs, wriggling in his arms) Stop! That tickles!

Tristan:

I thought I heard you talking to someone?

Mari:

Walter called. I think he was hoping I'd created some more flagae.

Tristan:

Now, you're calling it that? (smiles)

Mari:

Now that I know what he thinks they are, I'm not sure I want to paint them again. Go sit, I'll bring the food. Coffee's on the table.

Tristan:

And you said waiting tables was a waste of time. (laughs, ducking as she snaps a kitchen towel at him, crossing the room to where the little table awaits them) So, what does Walter think your paintings are?

Mari:

(as she brings the breakfast platter to the table) I think the best description would be, "mirror spirits."

Tristan:

(helping himself to pancakes) Mirror spirits? So, reflections?

Mari:

Reflections of life, that's a good way to put it. (gives a little chuckle) But according to Walter, they're reflections, but they're still alive.

Tristan:

(one eyebrow raises) How?

Mari:

(shrugs, also taking pancakes) Walter's the one who believes in fairytales. Talk to him about them.

Tristan:

I'll do that, next time I'm in town.

Mari:

Terrific. That will be after breakfast.

Tristan:

(sipping his coffee, pauses) It will?

Mari:

(nods, smiling mischievously) I have a grocery list on the counter, and while you're gone, I'm taking my easel back outside to see if I can finish that landscape.

Tristan:

Devious. (points at her with a forkful of pancake) You're devious.

Mari:

(smiling) It's how I got you to marry me.

(Less than two hours later, after Tristan helps her with the dishes, and moving her easel outside, Mari waves at him as he backs the Jeep down the dirt drive, out of sight. Settling on a pillow, in front of the unfinished canvas, Mari allowed her mind to wander as she basked in the sunlight, listening to the sounds of nature, breathing in the fragrance of flowers, grass, and forest.)

Tristan:

(shaking Mari, sounding frightened) Mari! Come on! Wake up, baby!

Mari:

(opens her eyes, startled by his voice, and the rough shaking) Tristan! What are you doing? I'm awake! I'm awake! (she sits up, pushing him away)

Tristan:

Oh, thank god, thank god! I thought you were gone!

Mari:

Gone? What are you talking about? You've just left, I barely got settled for painting.

Tristan:

It's past noon, Mari! I've been trying to wake you for almost ten minutes! I was just about to put you in the Jeep and drive like hell to the nearest doctor!

Mari:

You're not funny, Tris. It's barely been ... two ... minutes? (her voice trails off as she realizes the spot where she's sitting is shaded, when it was in sunlight a moment earlier, and the Jeep is back, but she hadn't heard its throaty engine, and the canvas -- she gasped and recoiled from it) What the hell, Tris!?!

Tristan:

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought when I saw it.

(The landscape is gone. In its place is a scene of terror. Her back to the viewer, in the main room of the cabin, Mari stands over Tristan's body with a knife. Her head is turned very slightly toward the mirror, and in the mirror -- Mari's reflection is horrified at what she sees, her hands planted against the glass, as if she's struggling to break through. And all across the painting are large squares Mari can't identify -- at first. Slowly, she looks toward the window of the cabin and makes a soft, shocked, moan. Tristan follows her gaze and realizes that the canvas in the front yard is set so that the mirror inside the cabin captures them, and the canvas, in its reflection, through the window.)

Mari:

What does it mean, Tris? What does it mean?

Tristan:

Walter's stories must have gotten to you. You had another nightmare, and sleep-painted again. Can't say I'm flattered to be included.

Mari:

Tris, I'd never --!

Tristan:

(interrupts) I know you wouldn't. (pulls her close) I know you wouldn't. It's just that crazy old guy's stories, that's all. He creeped me out, too. If I'd known this was some kind of obsession with him, I'd have never brought those paintings to him in the first place.

Mari:

We should get out of here, Tris. Today, now!

Tristan:

You don't have to convince me. Let's pack.
