While at the Minnesota Zoo not long ago (very early spring), there were wild turkeys out at the bird observation deck along the Minnesota Trail. The two males were fully puffed out and working hard to attract the ladies, of which there were 7 or 8 about.

As you can see, one of the males must have had an acceptable display.

What happened next was the strange part. That's right, birds mating wasn't odd. What was odd is that on the observation deck I turned out to be the only real adult. Despite the fact that there were at least six other people there, most older than myself, I was the only one who would address what is going on in this picture.

My son, 4 years old, asked why the boy bird was walking on the girl bird... and so the birds section of "the birds and bees" talk rolled out. Turns out all the other kids and grandkids also wanted to know so they came over and asked, much to the midwestern mortification of their attendants. I stayed calm and matter of fact. All the kids seemed satisfied with my explanation. A couple of them thought it was good enough to repeat.

It made a good photo op too.

[In which Little Paddington teaches the potato masher a cold, cruel, harsh life lesson.]

My beautiful Facebook Paddington Lovers. I don’t know what potato mashers in Europe are like. Are they as hateful as the ones here in Central Texas? Paddington will say, “I’m going to open my favourite kitchen drawer.” and the potato masher says, “The heck you will.” Paddington isn’t quite sure if it’s a metric or imperial potato masher. All Paddington knows is that the potato masher does its very best to jam the drawer closed to keep him from fully opening it to get things out.

“I’m done with the potato masher and it’s attitude!” exclaimed Paddington. “Can you please fetch me a hammer You Lordship?”

I fetched Paddington a hammer from the tool closet. I won’t go into graphic details about what Paddington did to the potato masher with the hammer because there are children in this group. Let’s just say that potato masher won’t be jamming Paddington’s drawer where he keeps the good stuff like the kitchen spider, the tongs, and the cherry pitter. Also, the lemon or lime juicer because if Paddington is going to drink his weight in gin, he likes a sizable splash of citrus in the glass.

“The Late Queen Majesty’s mother taught me how to drink gin.” says Paddington. “She liked a zest of lemon in her drink(s). There’s a zester in here somewhere.”

Jen and I ran some errands today. It was kind of a lazy Friday which was incredibly nice, life has been so hectic lately that the days that are a little slower seem to out of the blue. That was today.

We spent a fair amount of time in Nordstrom Rack, which if I might add...has some seriously fashionable things right now. After shopping we went to eat at El Torito. Their table-side guacamole really is amazing. If you haven't tried it, I highly suggest it. In the evening Christina came over to Jen's house and we drank some wine and chatted while taking a dip in the hot tub. We all had such a good time. I haven't laughed that much over silly things that I cannot remember, in a long long time.

When I got home I realized I hadn't snapped any shots all day, and this magnet caught my eye. So, I think it is fitting. This is my message to the world today. So world...act as if what you do makes a difference...it does.

Life Lessons from a Butterfly:

Let go of the past, trust the future, embrace change.

Come out of your cocoon, unfurl your wings.

Ride the breezes, savor the flowers and put on your brightest colors.

Let your beauty show.

Vito's Life Lessons

Week 22

There are two options really- sink or swim.

-----------------

Vito is not a swimmer. He's more the "bark on the shore until the other dog brings back the stick and then steal it " sort of guy. ;)

(See video here youtu.be/ZW_hYh1oJdA - this video was from earlier this spring. but he generally acts like that whenever there is water around...)

But yesterday he surprised me by actually running into the water, swimming for, and retrieving this stick I had thrown for Brit. He must have really wanted the thing- as it is very out of character for him. I of course told him how wonderful he was and he gave me this look like I was embarrasing him. He is actually a very good swimmer, but is a bit of a chicken about things. I was very proud of him and he happily carried the stick around on shore the rest of our walk.

In a figurative sense this quote kind of fits with my life right now. This weekend Pixel and I are off to the AB/NWT AAC Agility Regionals. It's going to be a great weekend and we will be running our butts off and doing the best we can. No sinking here! ;)

This mochi ice cream taught me a life lesson today - when something's really cheap, there's most likely something wrong with it.

So I was really craving mochi ice cream (because we went to a free sake tasting, had dinner, and ordered mochi ice cream for dessert only to find out they ran out) but the first market we went to didn't carry the brand we normally get. Wanting to satisfy my craving, I picked out a random box and noticed how cheap it was compared to the usual brand we get (at which time I thought, "awesome!" and wanted to get like, 20 boxes... good thing Sensible Dave stopped me). Well, we got home, I bit into one of the mochis, and full-on SPIT IT OUT cuz it was SO NASTY. I've never had such NASTY mochi ice cream. So... Dave went to another market and got me the ones that we usually get (pictured here). =D Yay!

If you want mochi ice cream, do NOT buy Maeda-En (plastic packaging) even though they make pretty damn good sesame mochi balls. Buy Mikawaya instead (boxed).

bedroom, 3.05.

"Ah, the moon’s too bright

The chain’s too tight

The beast won’t go to sleep

I’ve been running through these promises to you

That I made and I could not keep

Ah but a man never got a woman back

Not by begging on his knees

Or I’d crawl to you baby

And I’d fall at your feet

And I’d howl at your beauty

Like a dog in heat

And I’d claw at your heart

And I’d tear at your sheet

I’d say please, please

I’m your man

“All those trees right there are Mrs. Mayra’s children. She planted them in 1992, they are already 28 years old,” says her husband Anibal, referring to a wooded area of the school grounds where they both began reforestation efforts about 30 years ago when they started working there.
