This month's library display explores the various roles of women in the American Revolutionary War and highlights the contributions of several specific women. Women played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. Some did fight on the battlefield! Others contributed by serving as nurses, cooks, laundresses, water bearers and seamstresses for the Continental Army. Camp followers included women who, wishing to be by their husband's side, followed them on their campaigns and helped keep army camps running smoothly. On the home front women raised money to support the war effort. They also utilized their skills in spinning, weaving, and sewing to assist the revolutionary cause.

This is a photo I shot a few years ago. The Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale University is one of the largest buildings in the world devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts. The library has room in the central tower for 180,000 volumes and room for over 600,000 volumes in the underground book stacks. To me, the most striking feature are the “windows” made of 1 and one-quarter marble which let in very soft light. The library holds one of the few remaining original Gutenberg Bibles, as well as original works by John James Audubon.
If you are in New Haven, it is well worth an hour or so to see the building and look at the collections they have on display. That is, after lunch at Pepe's Pizza!
To kick off the Summer Reading Program, Oglebay Zoo came down with some of their friends for the kids to learn about!
