Lincoln Central Library is located in the city centre on the edge of the main shopping area within the Cultural Quarter. Built in a reclaimed warehouse it sits next to the Brayford Wharf.

Libraries can make you escape from a life that is not kind to you. You open books and discover other worlds, with other priorities and rules. A place where you can become somebody else. Maybe you should. Maybe you can.
Shrewsbury Library is housed in a Grade I listed building situated on Castle Gates near Shrewsbury Castle. The site was the home of Shrewsbury School from 1550 until 1882. The buildings were handed over to the town in 1882 and a free library and museum were opened by the Corporation of Shrewsbury utilizing the building in 1885. The library was moved temporarily to Raven Meadows in 1976 while the site on Castle Gates underwent extensive restorations. The library was re-opened in 1983 by Princess Margaret.

The famous Ephesus Library was situated to the south of the Agora. This elegant monument was built in A.D. 135 by Julius Aquila in memory of his father, Celsus Polemaeanus of Sardis, Roman Senator and Proconsul of the province of Asia.

This is the library of Paris' City Hall: L'Hôtel de Ville.
This City Hall was burnt in 1871, during one of these revolutionary times we had in the country, and this library was created in 1890, as part of the rebuilding.

Chamber of Actions ("Handelingenkamer"), the library in the Dutch Houses of Parliament building complex. Here, all Deeds of the Senate and House of Representatives are usually located.
Closed for extensive restoration works, all the books have been moved into storage.

When we drove by Whitehern House in May we just happened to show up on a "Doors Open" day so we had the unexpected fun of touring the house.
Of course, it's always forbidden to use a tripod in these historic places but sometimes one can get away with a monopod. Unfortunately, I didn't have mine with me so most of my interior shots weren't usable, however, the library had just enough light that I was able to get this.
Take a closer look at the bookshelves. They came up with the best idea for keeping dust off the tops of the books: long strips of fringed leather. I'd never seen that before.

The Passmore Edwards Library in Redruth.
John Passmore Edwards was a British journalist, newspaper owner and philanthropist. The son of a carpenter, he was born in 1823 in Blackwater, a small village a few miles from Redruth.
A lifelong champion of the working classes. Over the space of 14 years, 70 major buildings were established as a direct result of his bequests. They included libraries and hospitals all over the country. I remember frequently passing one of his buildings, a museum, on the Romford road at Stratford east London on my way into work. The libraries that bare his name in Cornwall are now under threat of closure by the council who want to sell off the buildings to save money. Its seems wholly unfair that something bequeathed to the people can now be sold for profit.........
