Golds HIll between Tipton and Wednesbury. The area was once a hive of activity, with the level crossing serving a number of workers' cottages off to the left and the line busy with coal and steel trains to and from local factories.

The cottages disappeared 40-50 years ago and traffic along the line diminished during the 1980s as UK manufacturing industries declined and failed in the face of international competition and Margaret Thatcher's policies.

The line closed in 1993, with various British Rail departments unable to agree on who would fund major repairs to Dudley Tunnel and Parkhead viaduct.

Since then there has been much talk of conversion into a tram route, which has finally been confirmed. I'll be riding the line some time around 2022.

It's spooky szn! 🎃

A Queens-bound train arrives at the upper level of Queensboro Plaza. Due to a weekend GO, Queens-bound trains were running express from Queensboro Plaza to Mets-Willets Point, so the diamond bullet came out on the weekend.

The Palazzo d’Avalos, commonly known as the Procida Castle, sits atop (at 91 meters above sea level) a limestone cliff overlooking the sea. It’s about two miles across to the mainland. A healthy swim if you’re in shape. The building was erected in the 1560s on the commission of cardinal Innico d’Avalos, whose family governed the island until the arrival of the Bourbons in 1734. The inhabited center of the island was situated behind the building; the cardinal also had a wall erected around the small town to protect it from incursions by Saracen pirates. That section of the modern island is still called the “terra murata,” the “walled land.”

In 1815, following the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy after the Napoleonic Wars, the Palazzo d’Avalos became a military academy, and in 1830 was transformed into a penitentiary by Ferdinand II. It functioned as such throughout the 19th century and most of the 20th century. It was upgraded after WWII into a maximum security prison, which is where that swim comes in. (I don’t know if anyone ever made it off this particular “Rock.” The prison was finally closed in 1988. Recent notices (summer, 2013) from Procida have made a grand show of the fact that the building has finally been acquired by the Procida city government, which has ambitious plans for turning it towards social uses such as a youth center, museum, exhibit hall, etc.

Another shot from my trip to Linda Vista hospital several weeks ago. This was an on the spot idea which turned out ok.

The High Level Bridge and LRT Bridge from the Walterdale. Bathed in a golden glow of sun rising. The train stopped for just a bit so I managed to capture it.

The former Great Western station in Wolverhampton was overshadowed when they invested in electrifying the LMS line to High Level station alongside. The last passenger train departed in 1972 - however the station lingered long after that. As you can see, in April 1991 it was pretty much complete.

Tracks have been cleared today, but the main building survives in alternative use.
