The Brigus Tunnel is a surprising reminder of the impact that the Labrador fishery and seal hunt had on the community of Brigus. The historic town is littered with reminders of what life was like hundreds of years ago and is known for its large number of heritage buildings and picturesque gardens. But the most notable historic site in the town is a large tunnel cut through solid bedrock near the harbour front. To many people’s surprise the tunnel is an artifact of the Labrador fishery in which many of the town’s inhabitants once participated.
The tunnel was built for the famous Captain Abram Bartlett. Bartlett frequently made trips to Labrador to partake in the summer fishery but due to an overcrowded harbour would often have trouble finding a dock to unload his catch. After purchasing a larger ship, his previous berth at Riverhead was no longer usable. The only remaining suitable deep water berth nearby was in Brigus Harbour. Brigus' sheltered and deep water harbour was ideal for holding large ships but finding a place to dock a ship was often difficult due to surrounding cliffs. A tunnel through the ridge would give Bartlett access to his ship and allow for easy offloading of the catch.
Bartlett immediately purchased a section of land near the ridge and hired the help of Cornish miner John Hoskins. Hoskins began construction of the tunnel around 1860. John Hoskins was a professional who had previously been employed at the Tilt Cove Copper Mines on the Baie Verte Peninsula [Virtual Museum]. The roughly 80 foot long tunnel was constructed by hand drilling holes into the rock in which gunpowder would be placed. In order to keep the drill bits sharp a special forge was constructed near the tunnel site. The tunnel is reported to have taken around four months of continuous work to complete. The tunnel measured eight and a half feet high and about eight feet wide allowing wheel barrows, wagons and even horse and carriages to access the wharf on the other side. The tunnel was used until around 1910.
Today the tunnel is accessible by anyone who wishes to venture through. The tunnel is located near the waterfront behind St. Georges Heritage Church near the Bartlett Memorial.

Waiting to catch a train for Euston on the way to the Isle of Wight I managed to catch this early morning snap of a southbound coal train in charge of an 8f approaching Tamworth High Level.
“The Field”, a popular spot for spotters of West Coast expresses had the bonus of a similar view of less exotic motive power on the Derby to Birmingham main line. By July 1965 spotter numbers in the Field were well past their peak after the withdrawl of Princesses and Duchesses.
Actually made as a gift for a good friend who hosted me for a week in his flat.

This is the second part of my video blog (vlog?) recorded on Tuesday 23 May 2017 when I finally had my first experience of venturing out in public dressed as a woman. I had christened myself ‘The Terrified Tranny’ as I will admit to several doubts about the whole idea, the prospect of stepping out in public was as mortifying as it was exciting.
In the first video flic.kr/p/V7xZgc my thoughts as I headed out in the car were recorded and it ended with my supportive and wonderful female friend gently persuading me to step out of the car. This video starts later that day in which I recorded my thoughts and feelings about how it unfolded.
I was a bit nervous about heading into a shop and being filmed so asked my friend to use a small GoPro camera which she held at waist level to hopefully make it less obvious. The resulting video is a bit wobbly and the camera angle far from flattering but it did the job and my first moment out as a woman was recorded.
There were further technical issues with this second video in that I was so elated about what I had done as I sat down to record my thoughts I forgot to turn on my microphone and ended up only having the distant audio recording from my phone. I was outdoors near a busy road and the traffic passing is somewhat intrusive on my dialogue.
So all in all a bit of techie disaster but in essence a special moment for me a a transvestite, I had got over my barrier and actually ventured out. Even today, I ca still hardly believe I did it, the video proves to me I did, it was quite an emotive experience but one I m thrilled to have had.
I feel sure my next time out in public as a woman will be more relaxed and I can settle in a bit more to being Helene the woman, but that’s all for the future. I confess I am excited and very much looking forward to the next trip out as a woman.

Bac Ha is the hill tribe markets. Every Sunday, people of Hmong, Red Dzao, Zay travel tens of km over the mountain to reach the market, the market is considered as a social activity for mountainous people.

Land monitor (Varanus bengalensis) is widely distributed throughout the country from sea level to mid hills up to about 500m a.s.l. It is diurnal and usually active after having got it body temperature up by basking in the morning
Hooray! We've had a on-off (mostly off) internet connection for over a week so I'm really sorry if I haven't been commenting on your pics recently...
It was a beautiful morning today and I was able to grab a few minutes on the way to work. It's promising to be frosty and foggy again tomorrow so I'm getting up early to go out with my camera...
