Liam started swimming lessons yesterday! There are 6 kids in his class. He goes this week and next week.
Creating an image goes through a few different stages. First there's the thing that captured your eye when you were on the location. A feeling, a story, a mood.
So secondly you try to see what made you feel that way, and you use your skills with the camera to try to tell that story using the visual elements available to you. Playing with the angle, colors, adding and removing elements by moving around or zooming in or out. Just until you feel yeah this kind of tells the story I wanted too
Then finally there's the post processing. And the odd thing is that this is also very much a snapshot of this moment in time. The emotions, the mood, the inspiration around you. It adds a third filter over the moment, a final refinement of the story that's being told.
Sometimes that final step, processing the image, turns out slightly different then you expected it too. For instance in this case I took this colorful and proud image of the stock exchange but when i opened it in Photoshop while watching a bunch of Walking Dead episodes in the background, well this sort of happened.
So that's my lesson learned for the day. If I want to make a bright and colorful image, don't process it while watching something with lots of gore and zombies like the Walking Dead..

Okay, I pixelated this poor grand piano to death. But even so, it's gorgeous.
Check out those pins in the pin block. Those babies are about 2 inches long, and are really heavy. The reason I bring it up is because every time I see the the pin block of the piano, I think about the time that my dad was in charge of the men's dorm back in college. They had an old upright piano in the fourth story, and after years of relentless pounding from college boys, the piano was dead. They tried to remove it, but in the years since it had been taken up to the fourth story, the stairwells had been narrowed and they couldn't get the piano down.
My dad always had a flair for the dramatic (he was a fantastic preacher) and he decided to make a college event out of removing that poor dead piano.
On the following Saturday, all the students gathered beneath the men's dorm, four stories below on the ground. The door at the end of the hallway of the fourth floor was opened up. Down the hall came four strapping college boys, rolling that baby towards oblivion. When they stopped on the edge of the fire escape, the piano made its maiden voyage out into the wild blue yonder.
My dad said that when the piano hit the concrete, the sound was unlike anything he'd ever heard. I'm sure.
What he didn't know was that each one of the strings had approximately 120 pounds of tension on them. At the end of each one of those strings was a 2" turning pin, almost as heavy as a 50 caliber World War II bullet. Dad said that they found very few of those tuning pins. Nobody died, at least that we know of...

[11:28] Bane Lykin drgas the struggling redhead into the cell, tossing her toward the post in the corner with a savage snarl of "strip...." tossed in her direction as he draws himself up in the door way, folding arms across hsi chest to cut off her escape
[11:32] Sable Levee snarls as dragged down the street small body is tossed into an cell , eyes flashing to just look at the man judging her chances of running past him. Smirking even as she knows she is in big trouble either way as she will more then likely get an beating later too by Ston. Just tosses hair back away from face before pealing off clothing what does it matter to her is she is naked, as she more then likely is most of the time anyways.
[11:34] Bane Lykin: "I'm doubting you're sorry for your attempt to steal from me... So I think you're going to have to be taught the lesson your boss very gallantly failed to save you from..." he smirks, his body rippling with restrained power as his eyes fun over the small redhead and her impressive rack, his gaze taking in her curves with a slow, gloating smile
[11:37] Sable Levee just rolls her hips well watching the man as yep she is not sorry as damnit wanted that phone, spoiled look of an child for an fleeting moment to face before it disaprears. Just standing there seeing what the man will do.
[11:39] Bane Lykin: "Yah wanna make up for it with y'pussy?" he demands, his eyes slithering down to the little slit she so easily revealed, his muscular frame immobile as his harsh voice reverberated about the grotty cell, his movements seeming larger as his huge shadow flickers behind him in the stark light of the bare bulb
[11:42] Sable Levee just looks at the man thinking that if he wanted he pussy he would just take it, no he most have something else in mind then just fucking her. Body tense as she really does need an shoot. Shifting body as eyes never once leave the man," so what ya want?"
[11:46] Bane Lykin: "A settlement girl I want you to make up for your crime and learn the lesson, never to covet my stuff again.." he answeres plainly, stepping forward toward her, his face cast into sharp relief by the light as he reaches in to his pocket, drawing out the black metal of the phone, the expensive machined piece of equipment gleaming dully in the erratic white light
[11:49] Sable Levee stands her ground as the big man comes closer as figuring she is gonna be hurt either way so why try to hide from him. Standing as tall as she short frame will allow as eyes flicker to the phone still wanting to play with the shinny tool. " liked your phone is all.." maybe if he would have let her hold it in the first place she might not have tried to steal
[11:52] Bane Lykin shrugs, tossing the little box to her feet, letting it skitter over the concrete and grime to lay undamaged by her, the tough phone immobile as it glints softly in the corner, the mans voice icy and demanding as he questions "That task I gave you....?"
[11:55] Sable Levee eyes flicker watching as the phone is tossed down to the dirt of the floor almost moving to pick it up but doesn't. Thinking it to be some sort of test just lifts gaze to the man once more," ya what about it?" fine tremor to frame shown if looked closely toward her as the need for her fix shows

Roof shape with paint and drawn with lines. I like my pencil and ink drawing the best. Roof was just hard enough to be a good challenge.
Final homework for the watercolor pencil workshop. Mixed media - watercolor, colored pencil & watercolor pencil. I didn't quite get the background finished. I think the bird is pretty much done except for some shading under the wing. Open for suggestions... I figured I better post it since the class ends tomorrow...

IT’S 7:30AM in a small AirBnb in the sleepy mill town of Millinocket, Maine. It’s a gray and miserable day, low 60’s with light rain, as my dad would call it, “Good old Irish Weather.” And I don’t yet know it, but I have just violated one of the golden rules of railfanning.
My friend Liam and I had come up to Penobscot County to check several things off the bucket list, and we’ve had a successful, yet grueling four days running up from NYC and around the whole of northern Maine. For our last full day up north, we had one last thing to catch: New Brunswick Southern. Liam had proposed a 5am wakeup call to catch 905’s run from Brownsville Junction to Mattawamkeag and back. A friend of ours had tipped us off the crew would go on-duty around 6am, run to Mattawamkeag, pick up cars, and run back. After three straight 14+ hour days with 5am wake up calls, I was frankly exhausted and begged for us to go straight for Mattawamkeag to get an extra hour of sleep. Liam at this point had much more experience in the Class II/III chasing department than I did, and rightly pointed out it would be worth it to watch them leave Brownsville. But out of pity he relented. After all I reasoned, we would get almost no light with cloud cover at 6:30am, so we may as well just shoot the return run. As long as we got to Mattawamkeag in time, what could go wrong?
What could go wrong?
Now I may be an atheist, but some higher authority heard that and saw an opportunity that was too good to pass up. As we turned up in Mattawamkeag and saw a small yard completely devoid of railcars.
Fuck.
We immediately hop back in the car and race all the way back to Brownsville Junction and are greeted with not an engine in sight. And thus, my insistence to get just a little bit of sleep starts to set in the delusion. Is 905 even running today? What if it ran somewhere unexpected this morning? The endless possibilities rear their ugly heads like a Hydra, constantly multiplying, feeding off each other. I don’t even know why, but we decide to drive a few miles down the line to the edge of Schoodic Lake. As we near the crossing, we think we hear a horn. We burst out of the car into a boat launch parking lot, cameras in hand. A lone fisherman sees our commotion and yells over to us,
“What are you all trying to see?”
Liam yells back, “The train!”
“Oh yeah, it just went through about two minutes ago!”

I don’t remember if Liam and I even spoke on the car ride back to Millinocket. I had played my hand in Vegas and unsurprisingly, lost. Our morale was shot. We had no idea if anything else was running today. We may have to shelve NBSR for another trip.
Thankfully, whatever deity is out there decided to take pity on us, and we pulled up to Millinocket Yard to see the 910 crew building a train to take out around 1. The shots attached are grainy film photos from that chase, when I decided to finish my FM11’s roll of film getting them crossing ME-11 southbound on the Millinocket Sub. The weather that day was almost mystical, with a light mist and fog blanketing the hills and forests, every bend and turn opening up ahead of us like something out of Harry Potter. It was a redeeming chase, and we went back to our BnB that night with a fully checked list. And it taught me a valuable railfanning lesson: Do not risk yourself by tempting the fates.
While I am certainly nowhere near as well travelled as some of my peers, this hobby has taken me to places I would never have conventionally gone. The states, counties, cities, towns, and vistas I have had the opportunity to visit, even in my own backyard, in just a few short years have been an incredible experience. Recently when I open the news and social media, I can’t help but wonder if people see the same country that I do. How could people possibly be so hateful towards such a breathtaking, diverse, and opportunistic land? My friends at college often ask me why on earth I do all of this. Why do I spend weekends and evenings and vacations in trains, planes, buses and cars going who knows where? And I’ve only ever been able to come up with one response: How couldn’t I?

I'm sitting quiet and alone and watch this kid quickly approaching me on his bike .... I think too much ... and I lived in NYC too long and walked too many hard streets over those years ... I just started assuming the worst ... that I was about to lose my camera .... well ... Kevin just needed to borrow my phone .... and after that ... I just needed to borrow his face ..... Moral ..... stop thinking .... just live .........
