I've been drooling over Kevin Day's amazing photos for a while and wondering exactly how he does this layering of different exposures. And then the lovely man did a whole set explaining how!
This is my second attempt. I haven't enhanced the colour or the contrast at all as it shows up the bits where I screwed up the erasing of bits of layer.

A visually intriguing wall of layers at Monkey Island
Created a blur on the left side using the black-to-white gradient tool.
This is a Santa Fe coyote fence with iconic symbols of the southwest: chile ristras on an old plank door and Spanish tiles on an adobe wall.
Deep under the layers of skywalks and habitat rigs, the millions of gears and pneumatic tubes that make up the heart of Escapement City.
Usually a thankless and nameless job, the Grand Inspectors tirelessly check and re-check wear and tolerances on the endlessly meshing teeth. They decided where the precious grease and oil go, they decide what the metalsmiths need to fix, and they alone can grind the city to a halt in an emergency. Even the Duke of the city must get their permission to change the settings.
Generally a dirty job, when they go on their required sabbitcal or if they go before the high court, they are bound by Duke's Etiquette to appear in a white suit, topped off literally with this lovely leather hat.
the brick work on this house has always looked so messy to me, the mortar squishing out everywhere is not really appealing and I would not want to lean on that wall either.

oh my goodness... I've been trying all day to get a whisper image and finally this one just came together for me.
Two layers of KK's Happy Heart, and one of Embrace, a pioneer woman's action "Soft and Ethereal", and that's really it, aside from shooting in RAW and tweaking it in there to get the colors to pop first.
