Bright Rose on a Gloomy Day.

Carnations are not my favourite flowers, but sometimes I do buy them, because they last so much longer than many other cut flowers.

These haven't even opened up yet, I hope they will do that eventually :)

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 m and weigh around 25–30 metric tons. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it popular with whale watchers. Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time. All the males in a group will produce the same song which is different each season. Its purpose is not clear, though it may have a role in mating by inducing estrous. Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 km each year. They feed in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth, fasting and living off their fat reserves. Their diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net technique. Like other large whales, the humpback was a target for the whaling industry. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a 1966 moratorium. While stocks have partially recovered to some 80,000 animals worldwide, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships and noise pollution continue to affect the species. 26074

I haven't posted anything in a while! Been crazy busy with life, and flying all over the world. Anyway have a great week and thanks for looking! Here's a favorite shot from Death Valley a few years back...

“Human life is beset with ups and downs, joys and sorrows.

These experiences are intended to serve as guideposts for man. Life would be stale if there were no trials and difficulties.

It is these difficulties which bring out the human values in man.

Only that which is got by hard effort will yield lasting benefit.”

(Sri Sathya Sai Baba, 2 September 1991)

Today in the begining of the afternoon I was crossing the chawk of Varanasi (Benaras) and I stopped again for a short while at the flower market where the light and shades always provide a great chiaroscuro (clair-obscur).

Among many people there was this man selling marigolds, in a glance I could guess the trials and difficulties which bring out the human values in a man.

The colour in front of the rock was truly stunning..

Another lasting memory of my trekking trip in Nepal last year. Climbing up here was really fun. Elevation was about 5400 meters above sea level. The ascent is quite steep and although the crossing is not technically difficult it is necessary to take it slowly to avoid complications from altitude. Naturally, it was a slog as the air here is so thin, about 50% oxygen and I had to take deep breaths after few steps. The snow on the surrounding peaks and on the summit floor acted like a solar mirror directing intense sunlight from all angles... strange feeling, a combination of freezing air with burning sun rays. The background is towards the east of the Himalayan range and extends all the way to Sikkim, India.

The Men's Only Hunt ends tomorrow, so this is the last chance to grab the hat. See my blog for details.

I was struck by the mystery and symbolism of these stones, who they commemorate and if any memories remain which might explain their unusual intimacy.

_Katehaki Pedestrian bridge, Athens – design by Santiago Calatrava_

Just when I thought I was done with this bridge, while wanting to send the link to a friend, I realized there was one more shot I never uploaded here. It was this one, the first one indeed that I had taken of this bridge. So here it is, the “Overture”.

This shot opened my eyes to a lot of things and was a turning point in my way of processing. It was when I realized that I have to work on my photographs the same way I was working on the drawings of buildings that I used to do, that I have to “see” the light in the same way I was doing back then. And it really is the same. Ever since, every time I start working on a new photo is like I was sitting in front of a white paper on my draw board, with a pencil in my hand, trying to create the world from the beginning...

Have a good weekend you all! I'm off to work on an interview.

Small reminder: I'm organizing the Athens Architectural Photography Workshop, Nov. 23-26/27, 2012. If you want to perfection your architectural photography, enrich your portfolio with the best buildings in Athens and also shoot great Greek seascapes, have a look at the full description and sign up: goo.gl/wd4Gh

This is from the Indiana Flickr Meetup way back in July, I started to go through some folders of photos and found a whole bunch that I just hadn't had the time to edit until now!

The concept was taken in an abandoned ketchup factory and the styling and general direction of the shoot was created by Evan Walsh.
