SN/NC: Calotropis Gigantea, Syn. Calotropis Procera, Apocynaceae Family
Calotropis gigantea, the crown flower, is a species of Calotropis native to Cambodia , Indonesia , Malaysia , the Philippines , Thailand , Sri Lanka , India , China , Pakistan , Nepal , and tropical Africa. It is also called Apple of Sodom or Dead Sea Apple.
It is a large shrub growing to 4 m (13 ft) tall. It has clusters of waxy flowers that are either white or lavender in colour. Each flower consists of five pointed petals and a small "crown" rising from the center which holds the stamens . The aestivation found in calotropis is valvate i.e. sepals or petals in a whorl just touch one another at the margin, without overlapping. The plant has oval, light green leaves and milky stem . The latex of Calotropis gigantea contains cardiac glycosides , fatty acids , and calcium oxalate . The flowers are long lasting, and in Thailand they are used in floral arrangements. The extract of flowers and leaves has shown hypoglycemic effect in preclinical studies. They were favored by the Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani , who considered them a symbol of royalty and wore them strung into leis . In Cambodia , they are used in funerals to decorate the urn or sarcophagus and the interior of the house holding the funeral. The fruit is a follicle and when dry, seed dispersal is by wind . In Indonesia its flowers are called widuri. According to Shivpuran (Hindu religion) the madar flower/crown flower is very much liked by Lord Shiva; therefore the crown flower and its garland are offered to Lord Shiva for peace, prosperity and stability in society. The Crown flower is also one of the major parts of the nine astrological trees (Navagrah tree).

One of the last shots taken down in the Kelso area, this one just up the track from cottage. lovely evening sunset.
In 1806, as Lewis & Clark returned from the Pacific Ocean, Lt. Zebulon Pike's party left St. Louis to explore the Spanish borderlands in the Southwest. Sent by U.S. Army Gen. James Wilkinson, Pike & his men crossed into Spanish lands, where Pike was briefly held as a spy.
To further map the west, Jefferson sent two smaller expeditions to the Quachita River (the Hunter-Dunbar Expedition of 1804-1805) & up the Red River (the Freeman-Custis Expedition of 1806).
In 1819, President James Monroe sent Maj. Stephen Long to better define the border between New Spain & the United States. Long led a scientific expedition up the Platte River to the Rockies to report on river courses & mountain ranges.
Early explorers' reports helped spur interest in the fur trade, stake United States claims to the Northwest, & increase knowledge of western lands & Indian Tribes. The reports had lasting effects. Because Stephen Long called the Great Plains the "Great American Desert," the pioneers of the 1840s tended to avoid this region as a potential place of settlement, & instead moved across the continent to the Northwest Coast.

"Marshall's Beach" - www.createwithlightphotography.com
This is a 30 second exposure of Marshall's Beach in San Francisco, looking towards the very famous Golden Gate Bridge.
I was in San Francisco for a conference in early May and had the opportunity to spend another wonderful evening with my good friends, Nathan Wirth , Steve-Maxx landeros , Ivan Makarov , Joe Azure and my new friends Jim Patterson and Kendra Karr . Thank you again to you all for being such wonderful hosts and company, I can't begin to tell you all how much I appreciated it. I'm really hoping to get back to San Fran towards the end of August this year, so fingers crossed. OMG, how I miss that place!!!
This was the first time I was able to get down to Marshall's Beach without monster waves trying to sweep me away. :-) There wasn't a cloud in the sky, but that didn't stop me from getting creative with my graduated filters to work the tonal angles.
The techie Stuff:
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/7.1
Exposure: 30 seconds
Focal Length: 16mm
Filters: Hitech Pro 10 stop ND filter, Lee 3 stop soft grad ND filter.

Have a great weekend everyone.
Today is the anniversary of my mom's death. I miss her so much. She was such a rock in my life. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. Always found good in everything. I will never forget her last day with us. My sis and I were at hospice with her for over a week. She didn't want us with her that day, it was like she knew. We would leave her room and come back. That last time, she saw angels on the end of her bed and we knew. A few hours later, she was gone. I miss you mom, even tho I know your angel is always looking down on us. God Bless.

Stormy, the LaMancha goat, and Elyse, the animal care specialist, have a strong bond. Yesterday, I made a few portraits for Elyse to keep. My wife, Janice, likes this one best.
Starting late in the evening of July 11th, there was heavy rain, lightning, thunder, and moderate wind lasting into the early afternoon on July 12th. The sky cleared for a short time, then alerts began to be broadcasted about tornadoes pending for parts of Illinois and Indiana, which were to be in effect until 10:00 PM CST.
Our area once again was lucky to receive little damage, but other nearby towns and counties had property damage including rooftops being ripped off, windows shattered, cars damaged by debris, and trees uprooted or snapped in half. Flights were cancelled coming in and going out of O'Hare and Midway airports, and vast power outages were reported by ComEd, with some areas still experiencing outages at 11:30 PM CST. Fortunately, as of the time of this writing, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Once the danger was over, I headed outside with my camera to capture the amazing cloud and color show. The winds were still strong at first, but that too passed with just some leaves and branches left behind to be cleaned up. It is predicted that we will still be under this system for several more days.

- Sagittaria latifolia is a plant found in shallow wetlands and is sometimes known as broadleaf arrowhead, duck potato, Indian potato, or wapato.
This plant produces edible tubers that were extensively used by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.
Broadleaf arrowhead is a variable-sized (0.2 to 1 meter) perennial growing in colonies that can cover large amounts of ground. The roots are white and thin, producing white tubers covered with a purplish skin a good distance (0.3 to 1 meter long, 0.15 to 0.6 meter deep) from the mother plant.
Each branch of the inflorescence terminates in a raceme of whorled flowers; there are 2-3 flowers per whorl.
Each flower is about 1" across, consisting of 3 white rounded petals and 3 green ovate sepals. The male flowers have numerous stamens that are yellow, while the female flowers have clustered carpels that are green and form a small bur-like mass.
The blooming period occurs from mid-summer to early fall, lasting about 1-3 months.

A folly Pyramid in the grounds of Doddington Hall a grade I listed Elizabethan mansion complete with walled courtyards and a gabled gatehouse. In Doddington, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire.
Designed so that it can be seen from the rear of the House, drawing the eye along the symmetry of the Gardens, the completion of the pyramid was coincided with the opening of the Hall’s biennial garden sculpture exhibition. The pyramid is permanent and will be a lasting mark by the Jarvis and Birch family on Doddington Hall’s enduring history.
James Birch explains: “In 1595 Robert Smythson, the architect of Doddington Hall, lined up the East Front of the house to face Lincoln Cathedral. The pyramid now lines up with the West Front of the house. It’s a true twenty first century folly, designed by my father-in-law Antony Jarvis. It has been several years in the planning and we are thrilled it is finally ready for everyone to enjoy whether they want to see it from the Gardens, from the top floor Long Gallery windows or up close from the ground via our nature trails.”
The pyramid has been built from recycled concrete and is ten metres (33 feet) tall. It has a built-in shelter for walkers, an owl roost and a bat chamber. It was built remarkably quickly in just 11 weeks. The driving force behind the project was Antony Jarvis, who passed the Hall to daughter Claire and her husband James Birch in 2007. A retired architect, Antony Jarvis has a passion for buildings and adds the pyramid to his other projects at Doddington including the Temple of the Winds, built in the memory of his parents. The project was helped by architects Steven Dunn Ltd.
Doddington Hall was built between 1593 and 1600 by Robert Smythson for Thomas Tailor, who was the registrar to the Bishop of Lincoln. In the 12th century the manor of Doddington was owned by the Pigot family who sold it to Sir Thomas Burgh in 1450, and eventually to John Savile of Howley Hall in Leeds. In 1593, he sold the manor house to Thomas Tailor who commissioned the present house. It was inherited by his son, and then his granddaughter Elizabeth Anton who married Sir Edward Hussey of Honington in Lincolnshire.
Their son Sir Thomas Hussey inherited in 1658. Sir Thomas's three daughters were his co-heiresses when he died in 1706. Mrs Sarah Apreece was the surviving heiress and on her death in 1749, her daughter Rhoda, wife of Captain Francis Blake Delaval of Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland, inherited. It then passed to her second son, Sir John Hussey-Delaval, and he had improvements made to the Hall in 1761 by Thomas and William Lumby of Lincoln. John's younger brother Edward inherited in 1808, and his daughter, Mrs Sarah Gunman, who inherited on her father's death in 1814, left the Hall to Lieutenant Colonel George Jarvis in 1829. On his death it passed to his cousin the Rev Robert Eden Cole, and it remains in private ownership today. In the mid 20th century the Hall was restored by Laurence Bond and Francis Johnston.
The Hall's contents, including textiles, ceramics, porcelain, furniture and pictures, reflect 400 years of unbroken family occupation. It is surrounded by 6 acres (24,000 m2) of walled and wild gardens with flowering from early spring until autumn.
The Hall and Gardens are open to the public, with facilities for private tours and school visits. A temple designed by Anthony Jarvis in 1973 stands in the gardens. Summer concerts and occasional exhibitions are held in the Long Gallery. Other businesses have been developed on the estate such as the sale of Christmas trees, weddings and a farm shop selling local produce.

Unlike other blues, the Holly Blue is a butterfly of shrubby parks, woods, churchyards and gardens, where its nomadic lifestyle makes it a welcome sight from the end of March, with a second brood lasting until late September. (occasionally a third brood appears, flying into November). Its habits more closely resemble those of the hairstreaks, as it often flies and basks high up on the foliage of trees and prefers to feed on aphid honeydew or salts from damp mud, rather than flowers.
