On Thursday, May 19, more than 70 guests joined United Way for a reception and exclusive look at innovative technology and educational programs that are changing the St. Louis region for the better. Randy Schilling from OPO Startups, Bruce Sowatsky from Community and Children’s Resource Board of St. Charles County and Julie Russell from United Way spoke on exciting programs leading the way in creating lasting change to help local people. The event was held at OPO Startups in St. Charles, MO and also provided delicious food and beverages to attendees.

Artist: Johan Christian Dahl
Johan Christian Dahl’s journey around Norway in 1826 left a lasting impression on his art. No less than sixteen years later, his drawings of the view from Stalheim down toward the narrow Nærø Valley in Sogn formed the basis for one of his most complex paintings.
In this dense composition, the mountains around Stalheim rise majestically against a dark sky heavy with rain; as the sun peeks through the clouds, light is reflected in the drops of water in the rainbow that arcs over the valley and keeps the landscape in a firm grip. The contrast to View from Bastei, painted in 1819, is striking: while the earlier painting focuses on a rocky protrusion overlooking a sheer drop, the abyss in View from Stalheim is hidden behind the small plateau in the foreground and is merely suggested by the mist from the waterfall. By making the mountainsides more precipitous than they are in reality, Dahl has constricted the pictorial space even further; the panorama becomes both monumental and intimate.
This secluded world contains a myriad of details, small scenes that all tell a story and that contrast the figures’ everyday chores and fleeting existence with the primordial mountain landscape and an entirely different sense of time. As with Winter at the Sognefjord, this painting also contains elements that have been ascribed a symbolic meaning: for example, the rainbow, the most eye-catching element, has been interpreted as a symbol of the divine and as an homage to the young Norwegian nation, while the mutilated birch in the foreground might allude to the violent forces of nature that pose a constant threat to humanity’s existence.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.
