here is lulu's "blood bank of hawai'i" public service television spot!
(the dog star sirius-ly has nothing on lulu :)
a pun-as-homage to the generous, wonderful Bill Adams who made this possible.. :)
HUGE thanks to Bill for transposing this from vcr to dvd and then to flickr-friendly digital! (he even arranged to have the vcr transported from our island to his!)
no way i could ever thank Bill enough for this Gift .. truly a gift that keeps on giving ~~~
our luluheart was 2 1/2 when she made this .. and it was on t.v. (all the time :) here in hawai'i for 5 years!
(they called it - thus her - "fred" .. afterwards they said they wished they had changed the name because lulu did such a great job bringing in blood donors with this t.v. spot that it deserved to be called "lulu" :)
am so happy you get to see her dear wiggly-joyful walk and wagging tail! :)))
my favorite part is sweet-subtle.. if you look carefully, you can see her eyes open and her eyebrows go up just as it fades to white in the middle of the video..
this is a wee way for us to express our thanks to you for sending precious lulu your love-filled healing blessings ~~*
as soon as i'm able to gather some moments (and my thoughts), will write on the other image about how she is doing
our hearts are full of lovelight for you, each one *
lulu and alight

Red Begonia in one of our hanging baskets in our garden.
These flowers give long lasting displays of showy flowers.
Tuberous begonia petals are also edible.
A planned camping trip didn't quite work out the way we'd hoped but we were blessed with good weather, a quiet spot away from any crowds, and evening visits by a few resident deer.
Here, we were in the process of cleaning up after an evening meal when two does and a fawn wandered right through our campsite - warily ignoring us. We stood still and watched - until we could resist no more and grabbed cameras - getting off a few shots before a car came along and scared them off. The best part was that our granddaughter was with us for one night and she was able to experience it too. If we leave a lasting impression with our grandkids at all, I hope it's to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature.
As autumn is my absolute favorite season of the year. This scene was shot out at Colorado during the change of the aspen trees. I decided for a very narrow wide crop to give the perspective I wanted for the viewer.
...is how many years I've waited for this moment. I can't count the number of times I've detoured through Vandalia, Illinois, hoping to see this shortline in action. I always went away with the same "parked locos by interlocking tower" shot that local fans are all too familiar with.
Today was the day, then, that I happened to be off work due to a late ER visit for a family member the night prior. After a lengthy preparation that required the crew and maintainer to replace every battery on both sides of the locomotive, PREX GP-9 910 (built as SSW 824 ) has finally retrieved a single load of plastic pellets from the CSX interchange. The crew will take the car up to Graham Packaging, then return south with two empties, an evolution lasting maybe 35-40 minutes, every six weeks or so.

After many years, I returned to this incredible
place during the foliage peak. This year, due
to the crazy summer and the long-lasting heat the foliage suffered in the whole Alpine Arch, Rivendell was marvelous with all his waterfalls and streams. It is hard to share my feelings about this place, I have countless memories and emotions, and every time is so special.

A round trip lasting a total of 44 hours to photograph these northern birds. I've been dreaming of photographing these birds for fifteen years. Goal achieved. :-)
We observed and photographed an incredible number of these beauties.

Commonly known as moth orchids, is a genus of about seventy species of orchids in the family orchid. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end. Orchids in this genus are native to India, China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia with the majority in Indonesia and the Philippines. A few to many, small to large, long-lasting, flat, often fragrant flowers are arranged on erect to hanging racemes or panicles. The sepals and petals are free from and spread widely apart from each other. The lateral sepals are usually larger than the dorsal sepal and the petals much wider than the sepals. The labellum is joined stiffly to the column and has three lobes. The side lobes are erect and more or less parallel to each other and the middle lobe sometimes has a pair of appendages or antennae. My memories of this great vintage neon sign only go back to the 70's, but it's a lot older and keeps on burning bright. Occasionally, a letter will go out for some time, but they fix it and the rather intense orange-red neon tubes continue to display a little evidence of a time when neon ruled the sign world in an area now bent on changing the landscape and look of things.
Thanks for having a look!

This Lego wedding cake holds two big memories for me. Growing up, my best friend from grade school and I played with Legos all the way into our college years. As you can likely tell, these are the classic Legos before they came out with the themed kits. This cake reminds me of my childhood friend and the good times we had together.
He was the Best Man in my wedding and used his collection of Legos to build this cake to present to my wife and I on our rehearsal dinner night. This cake is also a lasting memory and symbol of our wedding day and marriage.
This cake has been on display in our home every day for the last 34 years (35 years this November).

In Japan a tōrō is a traditional lantern made of stone, wood, or metal. In Japan, tōrō were originally used only in Buddhist temples, where they lined and illuminated paths. Lit lanterns were then considered an offering to Buddha.
The Garden sits nestled in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. Designed in 1963, it encompasses 12 acres with eight separate garden styles, and includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. This is a place to discard worldly thoughts and concerns and see oneself as a small but integral part of the universe.
Born out of a hope that the experience of peace can contribute to a long lasting peace. Born out of a belief in the power of cultural exchange. Born out of a belief in the excellence of craft, evidence in the Garden itself and the activities that come from it. Born out of a realization that all of these things are made more real and possible if we honor our connection to nature.
I witnessed morning prayers at Chorten Ningpo Monastery in Bhutan. Lasting an hour, the monks chanted mantras and performed rituals in the prayer hall. This routine purifies their minds, creating a meditation-friendly environment. Chanting and rituals seek blessings from the Buddha and enlightened beings, aiding their spiritual journey. The morning light bathed the hall, providing an enchanting glow for captivating photographs. Light and shadow played together, adding depth to the mystical ambiance - Chorten Ningpo Monastery, Punakha, Bhutan
My wife had some old chrysanthemums in a vase that were ready to be discarded. Every time I walked by them I felt I needed to get my camera out and photograph them. Finally when I did my wife wanted to know why I wanted to take pictures of old flowers. I explained that I could see beauty in their decay.

1931 Cadillac Model 452 (for the total cubic inches) Fleetwood Convertible Coupe. This beauty was one of only 4 of these built in 1931, and the first of this model that year.
“Magically smooth, uncommonly capable, quiet, powerful,” was how Cadillac described their V16 engine in 1931, and they were spot on. Towards the end of the roaring 20’s, Cadillac was striving for ways to make effortless power, matched with unparalleled luxury. While the V16 was announced after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the release of the new Cadillac was extremely well received and nearly 3000 examples were built in the first year of production.
Released in 1930, Cadillac became the first American car manufacturer to introduce a production car with a V16 motor. In the early 1930s prestigious American car manufacturers were in a tight battle of “cylinder wars.” The likes of Packard, Franklin, Lincoln, Auburn, and Pierce Arrow all had created 12-cylinder cars by 1932. Marmon, a Cadillac competitor, thought about the idea of creating a 16-cylinder car in the late 1920s before Cadillac, but were unable to do so due to the lack of resources.
At a time when a custom coach-built body was a symbol of status and wealth, the V16 became the one of the most revered chassis. Cadillac wanted the engine to be as vibration-free as possible, and eight combustion cycles per crankshaft revolution combined with balanced internals meant that a V16 was one of the best available packages.
As early as 1926, Ex-Marmon engineer Owen Nacker designed the V16 from two straight-8 Buick units that shared a common crankcase and crankshaft. Each bank was independently operated and only shared a common, center mounted camshaft which operated the valves with pushrods. The 45 degree angle between the banks was unusually narrow to fit inside the chassis. It was named after its 452 inch cubic displacement and produced 185 bhp which was good for 100 mph. It also used a unique hydraulic valve silencing system that reduced noise and was a novel feature in its day.
Cadillac general manager Lawrence Fisher and GM’s stylist Harley Earl were largely responsible for the V16s styling. Most of the cars were bodied by Fleetwood in Pennsylvania which was later purchased and moved to Michigan by GM to keep business in-house. The customer could choose between 70 or so available bodies that were elaborately finished and all highly individualized in detail. If that wasn’t enough, Cadillac could also provide a bare chassis to be fitted by the independent styling house of the customer’s choice.
Despite difficult times, and a price tag higher than any previous Cadillac, the V16 was ordered in huge numbers throughout 1930. GM paraded six cars for European tour and the cars received acclaim by both the press and public. Production reached 2000 examples by June, but by the end of the year, the economic depression nearly halted sales.
During an eleven year production, 4076 V16s were constructed in several series.
After the initial flourish in 1930, production grinded away for ten years with only fifty units made per year. Later, Cadillac reverted to their V12 unit but only after the V16 had made its lasting mark. In the end, Cadillac lost money on every car sold, but it was worth the cost of propelling the marque as a whole. It was estimated the V16 cost Cadillac 54 million dollars.

"Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment" -- Claude Monet
I wasn't wild about the compositions I could come up with. Travelling with a group of other people (non-photographers) I didn't have the luxury of taking much time to shoot nor even choosing any sort of ideal shooting location. I would much rather have found a field with a barn or windmill or anything of interest in it.
While I don't like the composition here, I just love the colors in the sky. It was really amazing. This is the same morning as the foggy shots...just after the fog burned off. So I processed this to weaken the details while keeping the colors in an attempt to make it look a bit like an Impressionistic painting.
Check it out large.
