Size: 7" x 10 1/2"

Notes: Beginning in the mid 1860s, and lasting until the early 1880s, Baldus primary commercial activity centered on the production of photogravures, a process he first explored in 1854. This plate is part of his first major publication in gravure form, a series of 100 heliogravures published in 1866 reproducing ornamental engravings of past masters, including Aldegrever, Master IB, Beham, Boyvin, de Bry, Delanne, Durer, Ducerceau, Holbein, Jansz, Lepaurtre, van Leyden, Marot, Solis, Vico and Woeiriot. This work had nothing to do with promoting artistic photography or his own photographic work; instead it was an industrial application of photography that brough credit and financial gain to Baldus as an inventor and entrepreneur rather than an artist. Printed by Delatre. Originally trained as a painter and having also worked as a draughtsman and lithographer before switching to photography in 1849, Édouard Baldus (1813–1889), became a central figure in the early development of French photography and acknowledged in his day as a pioneer in the still-experimental field, was widely acclaimed both for his aesthetic sensitivity and for his technical prowess. Establishing a new mode of representing architecture and describing the emerging modern landscape with magnificent authority, he enjoyed high patronage in the 1850s and 1860s. Yet, despite the artist's renown during his lifetime, his name is all but unknown today, his work savored only by connoisseurs. Baldus made his reputation with views of the monuments of Paris and the south of France, with dramatic landscapes of the Auvergne, with photographs of the New Louvre, and with a poignant record of the devastating floods of 1856. But it is his two railroad albums—the first commissioned in 1855 by Baron James de Rothschild for presentation to Queen Victoria, the second in 1861 by the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranee railroad company—that are his greatest achievement. Here he brought together his earlier architectural and scenic images with bold geometric views of the modern landscape—railroad tracks, stations, bridges, viaducts, and tunnels—to address the influence of technology (of which both the railroad and the camera are prime examples). In so doing, Baldus anticipated the concerns of Impressionist painters a decade later and those of many artists of our own day, meeting his task with a clarity and directness not since surpassed. The "Ever Lasting" (IMO 9595450) at the DP World Terminal at the Deurganck dock at the port of Antwerp

Roosevelt's lasting popular legacy is the teddy bear, named after him following an incident on a hunting trip in 1902. Roosevelt famously refused to kill a captured black bear simply for the sake of making a kill. This stone relief stands before the entrance. It is a rendition of the comic dawned by Clifford Berryman. Maybe because it was chisled by a Korean (I don't know if this is true or not) Roosevelt looks a bit asian around the eyes.

The School of Infantry Noncommissioned Officer II, with assistance from Task Group Taji 9, assessed and evaluated ISF soldiers on a variety of scenarios in real time. Assessments consisted of complex sequences that covered counter ambushes, counter-improvised explosive device, and urban clearance drills. Together, the Coalition and the ISF will develop a sustainable and inclusive ISF that can secure its sovereign borders, protect the population, support a normalcy across the country and ensure the lasting defeat of Daesh. Funny story about this guy:

Rumour has it he used to come into Suki's, reluctantly singing a little bit of whatever like everyone else. Then, there was a car wreck, and he was given some very powerful painkillers.

After that, he was reborn: fearlessly singing "New York, New York" in the style of Frank Sinatra (and quite well, I might add) every weekend night. While he occasionally sang some other Frank tunes if he stayed long enough, "New York, New York" was his signature song.

Not only did the usually deadly combination of pain-pills, alcohol and Rat-pack standards give this man the courage he had lacked in the past, but he would often make speaches in the musical breaks about improving one's public speaking skills by singing karaoke and joining the local toastmasters club while passing around Dickie's tip jar.

As mysteriously as he appeared, he came in for the last time about 4 months ago. I was there. He sang, made a few cryptic remarks about missing Portland, and he was gone.

I'll make a brand new start of it...

7533 “Laundry yard - Ice house - Garage”- Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site State Park, 5556 U.S. Hwy 17 N., Brunswick, Glynn, GA. April 13, 2013. Decimal degrees: 31.304879, -81.460390

"Laundry Yard - Ice House- Garage"

"Laundry Yard - The brick enclosure to the extreme left was used as a laundry yard by the Dent family. The enclosed area prevented cows, pigs or wild animals from knocking down and soiling air drying cloths of bed linens. It was added after 1901, probably when the plantation became a dairy. (far left)

Smokehouse - If you expected to have meat all year long, you needed a smokehouse. The winter months were the proper time for butchering, salting and smoking meats, usually pigs. Meat is cured in two stages. Fresh cuts are packed in tubs of coarse salt for about six weeks. This serves to draw most of the moisture from the flesh. These salted meats are then hung in the tightly constructed smokehouse in which a fire smolders for up to two weeks. The result is dries, long-lasting, smoke flavored meat that will age in the same smokehouse for up to two years before it is eaten. (center)

Ice House - When Hofwyl Plantation began to operate as a dairy, ice was needed to cool and preserve the milk. It was then that the Smokehouse was converted into an Ice House. Sawdust was added to the walls and used as insulation. This kept the temperature inside cool enough to keep the ice from melting.

Garage - The garage was added to the smokehouse sometime after 1901. The car parked inside is a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and was the last vehicle purchased by Ophelia Dent before her death in 1973. (far right)"

Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' 22W48 Tufted Hair Grass U0- (Mediterranean) Tufted Hair Grass, Mature plant size: 1x1ft., distinctive long-lasting yellow-green flowers., USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed U0 for 191 DAYS (Bluestone). Planted in 2022.

Missouri Botanical Garden: Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly called tufted hair grass, is a clump-forming, cool season grass which is often grown as an ornamental. It typically forms a low, dense tussock (to 16" tall) of very thin (1/5" wide), arching, flat to inrolled, dark green grass blades (to 2' long). Numerous flower stems rise in summer from the foliage mound to a height of 3' bearing wide, airy panicles (to 20" long) of tiny, variably-colored flowers (tones of gold, silver, purple and green) which form a cloud over the foliage that is particularly attractive when backlit. Flower panicles turn yellowish-tan after bloom as the seed ripens and may remain attractive through much of the winter. One of the few ornamental grasses that grows well in shade.

Digging Dog Nursery: Defined by narrow arching deep green foliage, a winsome sturdy mound propels emerald-hued stems, exploding into sheer sprays of distinctive long-lasting yellow-green flowers. The lithe inflorescences exhibit warm bronze tones when mature and provide an enticing winter presence. Smaller and more compact than other cespitosa species, this undemanding, all-purpose grass develops a dense semievergreen habit that can be grouped along a pathway or sited among Echinops ‘Blue Glow’ and Phygelius ‘Peach Trombone’.

Blooms July–October

Size: 12" – 2' 0" high x 12" wide.

Hardy to zone 4.

German postcard by Starfoto Hasemann, no. 393. Photo: Herzog Filmverleih.

German actressBruni Löbel ( 1920-2006) was briefly a leading lady in Ufa films and later appeared in three American productions. She achieved lasting popularity on TV as 'Oma' Herta in the long-running soap opera Forsthaus Falkenau (1989-2006).

Bruni Löbel was born Brunhilde Melitta Löbel in Chemnitz, Germany, in 1920. She was the daughter of Richard Löbel and his wife Melitta, née Goldammer. She had three older brothers and two younger sisters (Ruth and Margot). Her youngest sister Margot Leonard (1927-2014) was later a sought-after dubbing actress during her active years and was the standard German voice of Marilyn Monroe. Bruni failed the entrance exam to drama school. However, this did not deter her from her desire to become an actress. In 1935, Löbel made her stage debut at the Chemnitz municipal theatre in 'The Imaginary Invalid' by Molière. She took private acting lessons with Sonja Karzau, who was engaged by Otto Falckenberg at the Munich Kammerspiele in 1938. Bruni Löbel was determined to follow her, but her parents forbade the 17-year-old to move to the big city and locked her in her room on the mezzanine floor. But the daughter would not be stopped. She climbed out of the window, lowered her packed suitcase with a bungee cord, travelled to Munich and never returned. She initially worked as a secretary. But two years later, when Bruni Löbel was just 19 years old, she received an offer from Ufa for a role alongside Hansi Knoteck and Wolf Albach-Retty in the Operetta film Heimatland/Homeland (Ernst Martin, 1939). From this point on, she played both film and theatre roles, for example at the Marburg Festival with the still-unknown Gert Fröbe in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Bruni Löbel signed her first contract with Ufa on 1 January 1940. After a short time in the Reich Labour Service, she returned to Berlin and played her second film role in the youth Propaganda film Jungens/Boys (Robert Adolf Stemmle, 1941) with Albert Hehn. After outdoor filming on the Curonian Spit and studio filming in Berlin, she then appeared in 'Hänsel und Gretel' in Potsdam until Horst van Diemen accepted her into the Ufa troupe that was first in East Prussia and then in Italy for four weeks as part of the Wehrmacht support programme. After a short stay in Berlin, she visited the Ufa troupe in Romania, which gave performances in German Wehrmacht camps and barracks for over three weeks. With Paul Klinger and Paul Wegener at her side, Bruni Löbel made her breakthrough in the film drama Wenn die Sonne wieder scheint/When the Sun Shines Again (Boleslaw Barlog, 1943), an adaptation of the Belgian novel 'De Vlaschaard' by Stijn Streuvels. In 1944, she was on the 'Gottbegnadeten-Liste' (List of Godsent) by the Reich Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda.

After the war, Bruni Löbel went on tour with Margot Hielscher and Heinz Rühmann through several German cities and theatres and made 600 theatrical appearances. When the film industry recovered from the effects of the war, Löbel also got offers for film roles again. From the 1950s onwards, Bruni Löbel appeared in more than 40 film roles. She again played alongside Paul Klinger, this time in the film comedy Die Nacht ohne Sünde/The Night Without Sin (Karl Georg Külb, 1950), in which she played the female lead. She made three loosely connected films under the direction of Ákos Ráthonyi, which were also released in Germany under the titles Paulchen und die Mädchenschule/Absender unbekannt/Unknown Sender (1950), Paulchen setzt sich durch/Mädchen mit Beziehungen/Girls with relationships (1950) and Paulchen und die Millionenerbschaft/Engel im Abendkleid/Angel in Evening Dress (1951). In these films, Bruni Löbel played the schoolgirl Magda Lehmann alias Paulchen opposite Henny Porten, Cornell Borchers, Rudolf Prack and Willy Fritsch. She acted in three American films, the semi-documentary film drama The Big Lift (George Seaton, 1950) with Montgomery Clift, Special Delivery (John Brahm, 1955) with Joseph Cotten and Eva Bartok, and the Walt Disney production comedy drama Almost Angels (Steve Previn, 1962) about a group of boys in the Vienna Boys' Choir. In 1958, she stayed in Munich and performed mainly at the Kleine Komödie, the Munich Kammerspiele and the Residenztheater. She also appeared on stage in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Vienna. Löbel became increasingly in demand as a television actress and was given leading roles in television plays and series. She was regarded as an almost ideal portrayer of the resolutely amiable type of woman. Löbel was first given mother and later grandmother roles. From 1977 to 1988, she played ‘mum’ Elisabeth Schöninger alongside Walter Sedlmayr and Elmar Wepper in the popular TV series Polizeiinspektion 1/Police Station 1 and gained further popularity in the role of the prickly housekeeper Frau Rabe in the series Ich heirate eine Familie/I am marrying a family (Peter Weck, 1983-1986). Children and young people also know her in the role of her sister Agatha in the TV film adaptation of James Krüss' young people's book 'Timm Thaler' (1962), Timm Thaler/The Legend of Tim Tyler (Sigi Rothemund, 1979). She took on guest roles in other television series, such as Um Himmels Willen/For Heaven's Sake (2002-2004) with Fritz Wepper. From 1989, Löbel played the role of grandmother Herta in the family series Forsthaus Falkenau/Ranger Station Falkenau (1989-2006) with Christian Wolff and Hardy Krüger Jr. Both the role and series were a great success and she played this character regularly until the year of her death. But she also remained loyal to the theatre stage. In 2003, she played Aunt Abby in 'Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen' (Arsenic and Old Lace) at the Komödie im Bayrischen Hof in Munich. She played her last role in the ARD telenovela Sturm der Liebe/Storm of Love (2006) as Almuth Freifrau von Thalheim. Bruni Löbel was married twice. Her son Felix Bronner from her first marriage to the cabaret artist Gerhard Bronner, with whom she was married from 1955 until their divorce in 1959, was a freelance pianist and piano teacher. She was married to the actor and dubbing artist Holger Hagen from 1971 until he died in 1996 and also appeared with him in several television programmes, including Traumschiff. Bruni Löbel died in Mühldorf am Inn, Germany, in 2005. She was 85. Löbel is buried in Rattenkirchen, in the district of Ramering in the Mühldorf am Inn district, in an urn grave next to Holger Hagen's farm.
