Bloated City I Skinny Language (2007)
Today's Chinese cities are transforming from a traditional model into today's high-tech areas, just as Chinese characters transformed from traditional characters into simplified characters. Hung Keung interactive installation work deals with the conflicting desires created by this phenomenon.
"Bloated City I Skinny Language" consists of two projected screens, the audience will see themselves on both screens, at the same time, there will be numerous Chinese characters floating in the space which act like bugs chasing the audience. The behaviours of these "bugs" are totally different on the two screens. The audience will encounter a different experience about "change or unchanged", "move or stay" , "to be or not to be".

Dolly Pentreath
Dorothy Pentreath, who was baptised on the 16th. May 1692, was a Cornish fishwife from Mousehole. She is one of the last known fluent speakers of the Cornish language. She is also often credited with being the last known native speaker of Cornish, although sources support the existence of other younger speakers of the language who survived her.
-- Dolly Pentreath - The Early Years
Dolly was the second of six known children of fisherman Nicholas Pentreath and his second wife Jone Pentreath. She later claimed that she could not speak a word of English until the age of 20. Whether or not this is correct, Cornish was her first language.
In old age, she remembered that as a child she had sold fish at Penzance in the Cornish language, which most local inhabitants (even the gentry) then understood. She lived in the parish of Paul, next to Mousehole.
Perhaps due to poverty, Pentreath never married, but in 1729 she gave birth to a son, John Pentreath, who lived until 1778.
Pentreath has been described as follows:
"Dolly was the old matriarch of the Cornish
language. She was a Cornish fishwife who
tramped her fishy wares around Penwith
and Penzance.
At the latter place she gained the reputation
of being the last native Cornish speaker,
though she may not have been. Opinion is
also divided about how much Cornish she
could actually speak — though everyone
agreed she could swear in Cornish."

In 1768, Daines Barrington searched Cornwall for speakers of the language, and at Mousehole found Pentreath, then a fish seller said to be aged about 82, who "could speak Cornish very fluently."
In 1775 he published an account of her in the Society of Antiquaries' journal Archaeologia in an article called "On the Expiration of the Cornish Language."
Barrington noted that the "hut in which she lived was in a narrow lane," and that in two rather better cottages just opposite it he had found two other women, some ten or twelve years younger than Pentreath, who could not speak Cornish readily, but who understood it.
Five years later, Pentreath was said to be 87 years old and at the time her hut was "poor and maintained mostly by the parish, and partly by fortune telling and gabbling Cornish."
In the last years of her life, Pentreath became a local celebrity for her knowledge of Cornish. Around 1777, she was painted by John Opie (1761–1807), and in 1781 an engraving of her after Robert Scaddan was published.
In 1797, a Mousehole fisherman told Richard Polwhele (1760–1838) that William Bodinar "used to talk with her for hours in Cornish; that their conversation was understood by scarcely any one of the place; and that both Dolly and himself could talk in English."
Dolly Pentreath has passed into legend for cursing people in a long stream of fierce Cornish whenever she became angry. Her death is seen as marking the death of Cornish as a community language.
There are many tales about her. She was said often to curse people, including calling them "kronnekyn hager du," an "ugly black toad," and was even said to have been a witch.
Numerous other stories have been attached to her, their accuracy unknown. She was at one time thought to have been identical with a Dorothy Jeffrey whose burial is recorded in the Paul parish register, but this has been doubted.
-- The Death of Dolly Pentreath
Dolly Pentreath died at the age of 85 in Mousehole on the 26th. December 1777, and was buried at St. Pol de Léon's Church in Paul, where in 1860 a monument in her honour was set into the churchyard wall by Louis Lucien Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon, and by the Vicar of Paul. It read:
"Here lieth interred Dorothy Pentreath who died in
1777, said to have been the last person who conversed
in the ancient Cornish, the peculiar language of this
country from the earliest records till it expired in the
eighteenth century, in this Parish of Saint Paul.
This stone is erected by the Prince Louis Bonaparte
in Union with the Revd. John Garret Vicar of St. Pol,
June 1860.
Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may
be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth
thee. Exod. xx. 12."
Contradicting the monument, in 1882 Dr. Frederick Jago of Plymouth received a letter from Bernard Victor, of Mousehole, who wrote:
"She died Decrember 26, 1777, at the age of 102.
At her funeral the undertaker was George Badcock.
He being my grandfather, that is the reason I am so
well informed; and there were eight chosen fishermen
bearers to take her to her last resting place.
There was not anything erected on the old lady's
grave as a tablet to her memory. I know quite well the
grave where her remains are deposited."
In a later letter he went on to say that it was no surprise that Bonaparte and Garret had mistaken both Dolly's age and the location of the grave:
"Dolly's actual resting place is 47 feet south-east,
a point easterly from Prince L. L. Bonaparte's
monument to her.
It is not to be said that the monument is in its right
place, because it was put there by the order of
Prince L. L. Bonaparte, or by the Rev. John Garrett –
the one a Frenchman and the other an Irishman!"
The erroneous idea that Pentreath had lived to be 102 is believed to originate in a Cornish language epitaph which had been written by December 1789 and published in 1806 by a man named Tomson.
No burial of Dorothy Pentreath is recorded, but it has been argued that this appears in the parish register under the name of Dolly Jeffery, which is suggested to be the surname of her son's father. This theory is accepted by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
In 1887 the monument was moved to the site of her unmarked grave, and a skeleton was disinterred which was believed to be hers.
The skull was said to be of peculiar shape and only three teeth were found. It was reported that a tooth was offered to Bonaparte, in the hope that he would not ″disclose anything″. ]
-- The Last Speaker of the Cornish Language
As with many other "last native speakers," there is controversy over Pentreath's status. Her true claim to notability is not as the last speaker of the language, but rather as its last fluent native speaker.
After her death, Barrington received a letter, written in Cornish and accompanied by an English translation, from a fisherman in Mousehole named William Bodinar (or Bodener) stating that he knew of five people who could speak Cornish in that village alone. Barrington also speaks of a John Nancarrow from Marazion who was a native speaker and survived into the 1790's.
There is one known traditional Cornish speaker, John Mann, who as a child in Boswednack, Zennor, always conversed in Cornish with other children, and was alive at the age of 80 in 1914. He was the last known survivor of a number of traditional Cornish speakers of the 19th. century.
Matthias Wallis of St. Buryan certified in 1859 that his grandmother, Ann Wallis, who had died around 1844, had spoken Cornish well. He also stated that a Jane Barnicoate, who had died about 1857, could speak Cornish too.

Bangladesh celebrated International Mother Language Day on 21 February placing garlands at the Shaheed Minar, or the Martyr's monument, at the Dhaka University Campus. First commemorated as Language Martyrs’ Day it is a day of remembrance reserved for the young men who were killed in 1952 when police opened fire at a student’s campaign to establish Bangla as the language of the then East Pakistan. UNESCO declared it 'International Mother Language Day,” in 1999. Dhaka, Bangladesh. February 21, 2010.

Town Hall Hilversum, the Netherlands
In the Town Hall of Hilversum, architect Dudok language manages the vertical and horizontal volumes, the set of masses against hollow, flat roofs floating and monumentality. This remarkable and in many ways unique structure, whose first sketches were made in 1924, is considered the masterpiece of brilliant but anti avant-garde architect’s career. When the building was completed in 1931, the public embraced this example of modern architecture, for its balance between form and function, and it seemed traditional in composition, fine craftsmen and high quality finishes and materials used. But above all, it was praised for its monumentality. Some critics, however, felt that the building had an anti – structural arrangement, which was proportionally irresponsible in their ways and accused of diluting Dudok modernist designs or be halfway modernism, playing another contemporary, rather than create a formal language itself. By insisting that its architecture lacked a specific style, critics suggested that their designs were not fluent, thus limited to a strict formula for the entire architecture. However, the end result becomes a sculptural expression of a subject composition. It is a testament to the consistent harmonic form, function, art and human need. Hilversum City Council is not only the magnum opus Dudok ‘s career, but also one of the most successful buildings in the history of the modern movement.
The structure consists of load-bearing walls, reinforced concrete floors and concrete lintels above the horizontal windows, while the roof structure in the council chamber is steel. Its balanced masses make a synthesis of functionality and romanticism. Has been criticized, however the arrangement and construction irresponsible proportions addition forms. The use of overhanging eaves, an unusual feature to the Netherlands, and a simple tree -dimensional asymmetric geometry arranged around a square courtyard provide a modern structure while reflecting the medieval municipalities historicism by the presence of a large and a tower room. It is a masonry construction, using, in addition to reinforced concrete and steel beams, yellow bricks specially made for this project, including all facades. Dudok, who also designed the furniture and interior decoration, yellow bricks ordered in special sizes. Some decorative touches were made with blue and green glazed tiles, red tiles strips, black and gold, as the wall facing the columns of the gallery entrance, covered with light blue tiles or dark details on the bases of columns and red in the upper parts. Blue was also used in other decorative details, particularly in the outer columns coating. In the thin elongated interior columns were used and refined golden tiles, highlighting the dark colour of some soils, covered with marbles combinations, like some of the walls in the lobby or the stairwell. Glass is another recurring element in the sophisticated decoration, not only in window openings where clear glass was used, semitransparent, bevelled and stained glass in some gaps, but also excels in the decorative lighting, also designed by the architect.
The building was restored between 1989-1995 by Dutch Van Hoogevest Architects. Restoration costs caused some scandal, as it was at the time the proposal to sell a Mondrian painting from the collection of the city to pay for the restoration.

I was looking forward to some modern Chinese art, but at many of the museums they had a series of exhibitions on ‘Deutschland 8: Deutsche Kunst in China’. At the Minsheng Art Museum ‘The Language of Photography and the Düsseldorf School’.
The onion pancake guy kept motioning that I should take a picture of this, but I'm not exactly sure what I was taking a picture of. The wires? The scaffolding? The blue sky? I took the shot and he seemed very pleased with it.

“Refresh” is an exhibition series and a work in progress that wants to research Italian contemporary art and offer an update on practices that confront with the issues, languages and forms emerged with the digital turn of the last twenty years. The title of the series hints to the freshness of languages and to the wish to offer an update on recent artistic developments. The project consists of a series of mid-scale exhibitions, organized in temporary spaces with the involvement of different curators, in order to offer a full, detailed view on the contemporary Italian art scene.
Every step of “Refresh” presents new projects and researches by artists from different generations, who started working from the Mid Nineties onward. All the exhibitions will be accompanied by a bilingual (Italian / English) publication, published by Link Editions.
Curated by Fabio Paris, “Refresh01: #Layers” is the first event of the series. The show will open at Spazio Contemporanea, Brescia on October 22, 2016. Broad and comprehensive as it seems, this title refers to the various ways in which the complexity of the digital environment manifests itself in the works on show: the distinction between code and interface in generative art and glitch art; the layers in a digital image; the strata of time in the archives of digital memory; the distinction between public and private, material and immaterial, visible and invisible.
Under the hashtag #Layers, a selection of 12 artists will be presented: Marco Cadioli, Alessandro Capozzo, Alka Cappellazzo, Pier Giorgio De Pinto, Luca Grillo, IOCOSE, Kamilia Kard, Eva and Franco Mattes, Marco Mendeni, Filippo Minelli, Simone Monsi, Alice Palamenghi.
#Layers focuses on Italian artists in the effort, on the one hand, to investigate how contemporary Italian art confronted with the issues and the languages of the digital, with a specific interest in the relationships between artists and their geographical dislocation; on the other hand, in the attempt to present their work on an international platform.
During the show, the Link Cabinet – Link Art Center’s online gallery – will host the online project “Untitled” by Giovanni Fredi (curated by Matteo Cremonesi, from October 22 at www.linkcabinet.eu). The work is inspired to the Qingming Festival, a religious event in China when people burn paper objects in the attempt to make them reach their dearly departed: in the beginning it was mostly fake money or written prayers, now it’s paper replicas of luxury objects such as cars, watches and every kind of iPhone model. Scanned and turned into a 3D model, Fredi’s iPhone 4s 32GB will thus ascend to the sky, as a diary and an archive of his personal memory from November 2011 to July 2016, and as a kind of technological soul of its owner.
