UW-Madison’s Language Institute hosted World Languages Day on November 7, at Union South. This exciting, college-for-a-day experience introduces more than 600 Wisconsin high school students and their teachers to many of the world languages and cultural topics offered at UW-Madison. The event aims to inspire students to pursue a second or third language regardless of their educational and career goals.

As part of the Irish language classes in Ballyferriter we made a trip over to Great Blasket Island. I’ve been fascinated by the place since I first heard Maurice O’Sullivan’s classic Twenty Years a-growing on the radio years ago. This time I got to walk further than I have before, although it didn’t quite get as far as An Cró Mór.
This French-language opera in three acts is a fictionalized version of the story of the Martyrs of Compiègne. Set in the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, the opera tells the tragic story of Carmelite nuns who were guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation.

Balai Bahasa Bandung means Bandung Language Center. They organized the local competition. This is a national government-funded initiative under the Ministry of Education (MoNE). The Bandung Language Center was established in September 1999.
Traveling allowed me to learn a new language. In this picture we see the Greek Guards of the Parliament in Athens. But what I want you to look at is the Greek writing in the background.
When I decided to travel to Europe I knew I was going to Greece. There, not many people speak English in the smaller cities (like in Iraklio), so I decided to learn to speak Greek, although I lost a lot of it now that I no longer practice.
When we travel and need to use another language to be understood and get around, we have no choice but to learn it. I find that putting oneself in such a situation is a great way of learning a new language and the people I met in Greece were more than happy to help me learn.
VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service member volunteers from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center team up with local community members and an estimated 3 million volunteers nationwide to "make a difference" Oct. 22 during Make A Difference Day 2011. This year more than 80 military volunteers from the Presidio left their language studies behind to join projects at Beta Park and a private residence, both in Seaside, as well as Marshall Elementary School located in the Ord Military Community. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with the HandsOn Network and, according to their website, is referred to as the most encompassing national day of helping others.

i did the usual tourist thing of having a photo taken with the horse guards at St James Palace and the horse took a liking to my jacket and gloves!!

The ancient written standard was Classical Chinese. It was used for thousands of years, but was mostly reserved for scholars and intellectuals which forms the " top " class of the society called " shi da fu (士大夫）" . Calligraphy later became commercialized, and works by famous artists became prized possessions. Chinese literature has a long past; the earliest classic work in Chinese, the I Ching or " Book of Changes " dates to around 1000 BC.
A flourishing of philosophy during the Warring States Period produced such noteworthy works as Confucius's Analects and Laozi's Tao Te Ching. Dynastic histories were often written, beginning with Sima Qian's seminal Records of the Grand Historian, which was written from 109 BC to 91 BC.
i love the twisted arms. i've been trying to simplify everything in photoshop. going back to basics with editing and sharpening. i was becoming a little too heavy handed with color and contrast.
