A Montessori Poem .... Today I did my math and language, practical life too, I used my eyes, my ears and hands, my senses the whole day through. I added and subtracted, learned patience all the day I used tweezers, blocks, and puzzles, And worked with the scrubbing tray. I learned how to mix colors, And learned how to weigh. So mom and dad, please don’t say, “DID YOU BRING ANY PAPERS HOME TODAY?” You see, I’m sharing as I play, Learning self-control throughout the day, I’m learning to listen and speak clearly when I talk, To wait my turn and when inside to walk, To put my words into phrases, To balance along the “Red Rod” maze, To find my name and write it down, I do it with a smile, not a frown. My teachers set the scene and stand near-by, They want me to succeed and teach me how to try. They pose the questions, and help me to think, They keep me afloat and would never let me sink. CaMLA Young Learners Tests of English (YLTE) are a fun and motivating way to test the English of young learners in the primary and middle grades. The tests cover all four language skills and are developed by CaMLA in association with Cambridge ESOL.
The tests provide a clear and transparent assessment from Bronze (beginner) through Silver to Gold (early intermediate). The tests are international, focusing on American English. Of primary importance is that the testing experience have a positive impact on children and on their subsequent language learning.

Reading is very necessary for learning a language well. Only a good reader knows the finer nuances of speaking a language like an art. At Udgam we always recommend fostering reading habit as early as possible, beginning right from Preschool. To further emphasise the need for regular reading, our school celebrated Reading Week from December 1 to 6 in English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Gujarati.
The Primary Section made the most of the week by inculcating activities like answering riddles, extempore speaking from chits drawn, sequencing jumbled stories, rapid fire, spinning the yard, poster making, tongue twisters, writing and reading aloud simple poems, reading newspaper articles and discussing, character description from folk tales and noun games.
In Middle Section activities that were pursued to enhance reading were news reading like a reporter after dividing new into categories like International, National, State, Sports and Weather. Along with sessions of story, book reading penned by famous authors was undertaken. In Hindi, children were encouraged to chant dohas by Kabirdas along with video screening. In Gujarati class, children had to draw lots to read books. Sanskrit reading was made interesting by giving them topics from grammar. The groups took down names and presented their topics on charts, quiz, dumb charade, housie, flash cards and so on.
The senior school children presented book reviews of novels read by them. The students shared with their classmates the highlights of the novels read, the various characters depicted, the ratings the book deserved,etc.While some students used PPTs to present their reviews, others depended on their verbal skills to interact with the others and convey the content of the book read.
In the main action area of reading, the School Library, the students were shown videos of famous stories with morals. There were activities like story writing, paragraph writing, draw-a-picture, writing about your favourite character and Read-a-thon.
A Book Fair was a Grand Finale to the Reading Week. It was attended in large numbers by students, parents and teachers. The children went around excitedly from shelf to shelf and selected books to buy and take home. We hope the spirit of reading will continue in the times to come...
The Dongducheon Foreign Language High School invited U.S. Army Garrison
Casey Commander Lt. Col. Steven G. Finley, as a keynote speaker on May 14.
Finley spoke to 113 students and faculty members starting with a brief
biography and he explained why he had joined the U.S. Army. Students asked
questions about his career, family, hobbies, and the daily life of a
Soldier.
Throughout his speech, Finley charged the young Korean students to start
thinking about their future and establish a twenty-year plan, or "road map"
for their life.
Near the end of his speech Finley cheered, "readers are leaders" as way to
motivate the future leaders to develop positive and healthy habits.
Jaesup Pak, professor of Korean language and literature at Inje University in Korea, introduces cha (tea) and darye (etiquette for tea). Tea was introduced to Korea from China sometime in the 6th or 7th century and since then Koreans have developed an approach to tea with fewer formal rituals and greater range of flexibility in enjoyment of tea. In Korea, tea has always been more than just a simple beverage. Appreciation of music, poetry, dance and painting prospered as part of tea ceremonies among the elite and the royal court. The event includes a tea tasting. The first 100 attendees will receive a tea bowl used in the tea tasting.
Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.

Language Day is open to the public and attended by schools throughout the region to promote an understanding of diverse customs and cultures from around the world. Approximately 5,000 people attended the annual event featuring cultural displays, activities and international ethnic cuisine served by local vendors on Presidio’s Soldier Field.
The event featured a Vietnam War veterans recognition ceremony. Vietnam War lapel pins authorized by Congress were individually presented by POM Garrison Commander Col. Lawrence Brown and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roberto Marshall to approximately 75 Vietnam War veterans in attendance.

Minnie Nast was born in Karlsruhe, Germany on 10th Oct 1874 and died in Füssen, Germany on 20th June 1956.
She studied at the Karlsruhe Conservatory, making her début at Aachen in 1897. The demand for her voice was great and she sang in USA, Canada, Russia and England. She was involved in a shipwreck in 1907 in which many lives were lost and after this she decided not to go overseas again.
In 1898 she joined the Dresden Royal Opera where she remained until retirement in 1919.
On 29th Jan 1911 in Dresden she created the role of 'Sophie' in the world première of Richard Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier.
She sang the part of Micaëla in the first recording of Carmen - this German language Carmen was recorded by the Gramophone and Typewriter Company in Berlin during October 1908.
In honor of 50 successful years of the English Language Fellow Program, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce hosted a celebratory event on November 5th in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the U.S Department of State to honor the program, its participants, and its partners. Mountain Akakous or Tadrart Acacus is the rocky mountains located in the south western Libya, in what was known as the "Fezzan", and in the Sahara Desert, is the nearest city to the ancient languages.

Colored paintings on the rock in the caves of Acacus in Libya show animals and humans, shows a dramatic change in the nature in the region.
The area Bkhovha old, as they have a rich set sculptures and paintings on the rock declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1985 because of the importance of these paintings and sculptures, some of which date back to 21,000 a year. Which reflect the culture and nature of changes in the region. PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The quarterly team running competition at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, a.k.a. the Commander's Cup, took place at the Price Fitness Center track on August 1. The Army took first place in the women's division and the Air Force captured first place in the Men's Division. The Army was presented the Commander's Cup trophy by DLIFLC Commandant Col. Danial Pick for achieving the best combined time of the men's and women's teams.

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.
It's actually a macro shot (you might notice the slight barrel distortion). The books were part of a special edition of very small (and colourful) paperbacks.

I taught my daughter several signs from the American Sign Language (ASL). She does not have a full ASL vocabulary as she only knows 7 signs. But you know what, just three of those signs have saved us so much grief. I know when she wants "more", I know when she's hungry and wants to "eat", and I know when she wants her sippy cup to "drink" from. I don't have moments of frustration at meal times (okay, maybe some frustration sometimes..we're both human after all). The short of it though, is that sign language has helped us communicate better, even with just a few signs.
Has it hampered her speech? No, not really. I think it wires the brain to connect that all objects have names. And the words she can say, she says. She can say more for example, while signing. But she can't say the hard word "cracker" yet, so she signs that (it's incidentally her favorite word). Other words I didn't teach her the sign for but she instead says are "bird" and "water".
It would be the ultimate understatement to say I'm proud of her.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center observed Memorial Day during a ceremony on Soldier Field at the Presidio of Monterey, California, May 26. The annual ceremony consists of a formation of troops in their dress uniforms representing all four service detachments, ceremonial cannon fire and the playing of taps. Retired U.S. Air Force Col. William “Terry” Bare, former assistant commandant at DLIFLC from 2008 to 2011, was guest speaker at the event that honored service members killed in service to our nation.

Although there is a positive relationship between dogs and human language, a dog has no concept of the "English" language.
However, According to Hungarian scientists who published a groundbreaking study, dogs understand the meaning of words and the intonation with which they are spoken.
Let's say that even if you tell your dog in a very excited tone that he needs to go to the vet, he will probably see right through you and not want to go.
It doesn't matter what the sound is called. You could teach it the Spanish word for "sit," the English term for "turn around," and the Chinese word for "wait."
It doesn't learn multiple languages, and it doesn't know that these words come from different languages.
The dog knows that when the human makes that sound, it should respond with a sound of its own; when it makes a particular sound, its owners praise it with treats and love.

In the twenties, there was an elephant in a circus who was thought not to know any tricks, but it turned out that he knew all the schemes but responded only to Polish commands. So they had to retrain him in English. This story was made into the book/movie Water for Elephants.

The rhythm, patterns, tone of voice, and body language extensively communicate our intent to the dog. They can learn commands if someone takes the time to teach them consistently.

The Friars Peace Garden
The concept of creating a Peace Garden within the 42 acres that make up the grounds of The Friars was first discussed in 2006 by the Prior , the Estate Manager, and the Project Manager Jayne Hoose. The idea came about because Jayne Hoose had used the site as a place of escape whilst suffering from ME and felt that producing a Peace Garden was a way of giving something back and providing an additional space which would be open to all who sought the sanctuary she had found there.
The fundraising was started with a gift of £1000 from the local Funeral director Paul Rowland. The project has also been support by Gallaghers who undertook the preparation of the site for the garden's installation. The fundraising and implementation of the project has involved over 150 different individual volunteers including pupils and staff from St Anselm's school in Canterbury.
A Lottery Grant of £46484.84 was awarded to The Friars in 2010 via Community Spaces and Groundwork UK.
The garden, in the unused main entrance to The Friars Gatehouse, was designed to provide for a quiet space accessible to a wide range of visitors incorporating different seating styles and with flat access for those with mobility problems and families using children's buggies. Texture and scent have been incorporated to widen the garden's appeal and provides interest for those with sight impairment.
The Peace Garden is divided by upright sleepers into several small themed gardens allowing the visitor to view the garden as a whole, whilst enjoying the different smaller areas of planting. The first garden entered takes up the busy stressful mood of many visitors and aims to subtly move this energy to a place of warmth and vibrancy. This then enables the visitor to take onboard the energy reduction of the wind and wave garden. Making use of soothing curves and a mauve and pale yellow palette, this is designed to invoke a mood of gentle flowing calm. The central earth and water garden with a blue and white palette encourages tranquillity and stillness. The visitor, supported by the sounds of the water features, is encouraged to rest and 'to be'
Incorporated throughout the garden are peace tiles in over 200 different languages acting as a symbol of striving for the peaceful integration of all in society - locally, nationally and internationally. Parishioners, visitors and local businesses have sponsored these tiles.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California -- The 2018 Language Day celebration was held by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, May 11. Language Day is open to the public and attended by schools across the nation to promote an understanding of diverse customs and cultures from around the world. Approximately 6,000 people attended this annual event featuring cultural displays, activities and international ethnic cuisine served by local vendors.
