The owners have young children so required areas of level lawn to allow them to play. They also required a large deck area to barbecue and entertain. Trellis would also be required to assist with privacy at the lower end of the garden. The garden was re-designed by www.postalgardendesign.co.uk and built by www.wyldlandscapes.co.uk.

Finding Versailles sometimes too hectic, Louis XIV had Marly made as a quiet retreat. It was a vast project but, unlike Versailles, was not a centre of court life. A good impression of the estate in its prime can gained from Gothein's illustration and text, including the contemporary description by Saint Simon. The house was destroyed during the French Revolution but the main elements of the garden survive, as does the air of quiet seclusion. This garden has been designed and influenced by Andre Le Notre.

These photos show the finished garden after the terracing work is complete. After the retaining walls were constructed, the ground was raised to the new levels with topsoil and a new lawn laid. A large deck at the lower end of the garden provides an ample entertaining area and raisning the shed also allows easy access. A small amount of planting along the left side adds to the interest without creating too much maintenance. The design was carried out by www.postalgardendesign.co.uk and the build by www.wyldlandscapes.co.uk.
Before Landscape Transformation – Back - This is a photo from the sales flyer when we purchased our home. We did an extensive landscape transformation removing the post mounted natural gas grill. We extended the original flowerbed along the back of the house and along the privacy hedge to the right. We also added a new flowerbed along the drive to the left. A natural stone boarder was added using bluestone and fieldstone was used in the flowerbed along the driveway. The original roof was removed and a Colonial Slate lifetime shingle was used to add interest and texture to what was a large uninteresting space.

This fine tree is columnar in its youth becoming rounded as it matures. It has a dense habit and is very formal in its appearance. The foliage turns yellow in the fall.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build
A Funky Communal Roof Terrace in Canning Town, London E16 4LG
Brief:
The client owns a number of flats within a private residential block in Canning Town, East London. The block is home to approximately a hundred residents. Currently, the block benefits from a communal roof terrace. However, this space is uninspiring and mainly used as an area for smoking and the occasional barbeque. The brief was to develop a second roof terrace for communal use by the residents. Views out from the terrace include the Millennium Dome and the canopies of the trees in a neighbouring park. These views should be emphasised in the new design.
Solution:
The design creates a contemporary and vibrant space using a series of modular units, comprising steel planters with built-in seating and tables on a grid of interlocking decking. These units vary in size to provide places to eat or relax for varying sizes of group. A large section of artificial lawn located in the sunniest corner of the terrace will feature a number of built-in, bespoke, artificial lawn covered sun loungers/seats. The decking features a large square insert of turquoise Perspex, which will be backlit to bring the space to life in the evening. The Perspex theme is continued with the addition of brightly coloured, varied length Perspex rods through the planters, while Perspex armchairs provide durable and contemporary individual seating.
Specimen shrubs provide structural backbone to the planting scheme, complemented by evergreen grasses to give colour and movement, and hardy architectural plants that will maintain their appeal throughout the seasons. The planting is also chosen for its vibrant foliage colour and low maintenance. Two sides of the terrace will be screened using small, coloured Perspex squares on stainless steel tension wire interspersed with planting, to allow privacy to the residents that own terraces directly below without masking the surrounding views. On a third side, a structural glass screen makes the terrace safe but does not affect the views. Smokers are provided with an area of seating in a sheltered spot located close to the doors out on to the terrace. Shelter from the wind comes from large specimens shrubs.

Basically, it's a commentary on mass consumption and consumerism, as the white ground, trees, and canvas on the three sides not pictured here(though you can see the shadow). The wall in the back is made of plastic lumber, a crass bar code dominating this empty scene.

Before Landscape Transformation – Back - This is a photo from the sales flyer when we purchased our home. We did an extensive landscape transformation adding a brick paver patio, stone stepper walkway, fountain, and several flower beds. We installed landscape lighting in the front and back yard using two separate 300 watt circuits (front and back). LED lights are used to illuminate evergreens as they enhance the blue, green, and silver colors while saving energy. We used 20 watt halogen flood lights to light up deciduous trees and shrubs (LED lights are too unnatural, in my opinion, even when using new LED’s advertised as “warm white”. I find LED’s give deciduous trees a Halloween appearance). The gazebo was added to the patio to provide shelter from afternoon sun and light rain.
We love the feeling of taking our shoes off and walking on flagstone in the backyard and enjoying a patio with a view of the city. We can help you out with the walkway and patio but you're on the own for the view! What do you love (or hate) about your backyard?
