Bergamo - piazza Vecchia

The Nirvana Memorial Gardens are largely landscaped in the classic Chinese style, complete with streams, ponds, bridges and pavilions. A pity the water was rather muddy though...

In São Domingos de Benfica, Lisbon, the Fronteira Palace, one of the most important examples of 17th century architecture and tile work in Portugal, benefits from maintenance work in its Baroque-inspired gardens. Gardeners, many of them volunteers, are dedicated to the care of the boxwood beds, maintaining the elaborate geometric patterns characteristic of this landscape style. One of the most notable elements is the long wall-gallery, adorned with tiles representing the ancestors of the Mascarenhas family in the lower section. The upper section, known as the "Galeria dos Reis" (Gallery of Kings), displays busts of the Portuguese monarchs, except for the Filipes, in blue niches, and is topped by pyramidal turrets. Built as a hunting lodge in the 17th century, the palace and its gardens reflect the combination of Italian tradition and Portuguese decorative identity, and their preservation is crucial, given their status as a National Monument since 1982.

The Chinese Garden of Friendship in Sydney was built with the help of designers and artisans / craftsmen from Guangdong province in China. It is so authentic in appearance that it could be somewhere in China.

I love this time of year; as crazy as it is, it's so nice to drop in to see client/friends and their gardens, and to walk through what we've created together - with some very talented installers, of course! If I haven't seen you yet, I will soon. Can't wait!

This annual herbaceous plant stands out for its prolonged flowering from summer to autumn and for the variety of vibrant colors, attracting pollinators such as butterflies and bees. Zinnias are often used in the festival's landscape compositions due to their ease of cultivation, heat resistance, chromatic diversity and ability to attract pollinating insects. Its characteristic floral structure, with petals arranged in concentric layers and a center rich in yellow stamens, contributes to cross-pollination and biodiversity. Its durability as a cut flower and adaptation to well-drained soils and full sun exposure make it a common choice in both home gardens and environmental education projects.

Believe it or not, I've been working on this (on and off) for almost three years. I was quite taken with the appearance of this garden when I first saw it and even though the light was far too harsh and not at all right for a garden photograph I had to try. When I got home I knew I had a lot of work to do but at that time I had no idea how much.

I've tried going back to this location about a half dozen times since then to get a new photograph and, hopefully, save myself a few editing hours, however, the plantings had changed and there just wasn't what I saw and felt three years ago. One of the things I felt that day was heat....it was extremely hot that day.

How hot was it?

Well, to quote Eugene Jerome (Biloxi Blues), it was "Africa hot" and like Eugene I wasn't sure I could stay if it was 'gonna be this hot.' However, when I walked toward the garden it was so lovely my hope was that I could interpret such a beautiful assault on the senses: fragrance, colour, the sound of water in the fountain, the wonderful design conceived by a landscape architect.....and even the heat.

Since then I've worked on this, put it away and come back to it and probably added close to 100 layers of filters and textures including a hint of Evelyn Flint's 'Pastel Storm' in the sky.

I hope it gives you a foretaste of summer and flowers and gardens to come. :-)

if you regard this scenery carefully you'll find up to 4 generations using this public space in there way. I would say, the park as such seems to be working well in its function!

The original house at Plas Brondanw was built in 1550. The architect Clough Williams-Ellis inherited the house and estate from his father in 1908 and immediately began improving it. In 1930 he built the square tower (with an arched base) on the front of the house as a buttress to stop it from tilting away from the steep hillside on which it was built. Look carefully and you can see the difference in the colour and the cut of the stone.

In 1951 a disastrous fire swept through the house but the massive stone structure remained intact and the house was reconstructed within 2 years.

Today the house is used primarily as an art gallery, Oriel Brondanw, which is run by a separate foundation (The Susan Williams-Ellis Foundation) to that which runs the garden (The Clough Williams-Ellis Foundation). Susan was Clough's daughter and founder of the Portmeirion Pottery.

Bloxworth Manor House - (Elizabethan E-Plan)

Grade I listed house built in 1608 and claims to be the first brick property in the county of Dorset.

Built in 1608 by George Savage Savage, part of the possessions of the Cerne Abbey, at the dissolution. Not a large estate, but the family seem to have been mildly prosperous at the beginning of the 17th century and the house was rebuilt.

Due to a poor financial position, George Savage (great-great grandson & MP for Wareham) was forced In 1689 to convey the house to Henry Trenchard – whose family also owned Poxwell Manor – and it remained in the Trenchard family until 1964.

Over the last 100 years the house fell into ruins, was vandalized and then restored.

The house was used as Bathsheba Everdene's house (Upper Weatherbury Farm) in the 1967 film adaptation of Far from the Madding Crowd. It was considerably and sympathetically restored in the 1970s.

The horticulturalist Martin Lane Fox, acquired the house in 1997 and remodelled the garden. The house was on the market in 2014 for £4 million
