I've become fascinated by the garbage in the hallway at my workplace. I didn't plan to visit said workplace today, but when I ended up there a box full of lab glass caught my eye.

“Being Material,” CAST’s second symposium, showcased recent developments in materials systems and design, placing this work in dialogue with kindred and contrasting philosophy, art practice and critique. Panels on the PROGRAMMABLE, WEARABLE, LIVABLE and INVISIBLE explored new and unexpected meetings of the digital and material worlds.

Skylar Tibbits, Assistant Professor of Design Research in the Department of Architecture and one of the symposium’s conveners, met with WEARABLE panelist Hussein Chalayan, for an exploratory visit of MIT’s International Design Center following the two-day conference. For more than twenty years, Chalayan has used clothing as a platform to display materials that change state and transform themselves. Skylar Tibbits is a co-director and founder of the Self-Assembly Lab, which focuses on self-assembly and programmable material technologies for novel manufacturing, products and construction processes.
