I shot this macro especially for this week's Macro Mondays theme on Footware, HMM
I don't see penny loafers anymore. When I was in High School, in the early fifties, well-shined loafers with shiny copper pennies inserted into the slot made for them were the standard footwear of young people.
I decided that shinny dimes were smarter because they were useful if you ran out of money. A bus ride cost a nickel or a dime and a phone call cost a dime. My allowance including working on Sundays for my Dad was four dollars. I generally spent about a dollar on books or magazines. Plus, another dollar for malteds. Dating ate money rather quickly and I needed to be sure I had the fare home or for a call for help to my Dad tucked away in my shiny loafers.
It was delicious

Loved the glaze and coconut with almond topping. However, not crazy about the texture of the bread. Will find a different quickbread recipe and use this topping.
The recipe source is:

The only recipes that I will post to my blogs are those that I truly love and want to repeat bake/cook.

There was a time, before the debit card and ATM, when cash payment required the correct dollars and cents. That time is now long gone, and the copper penny (now 97.5% zinc) literally costs more than it’s worth. Back in the 1930s, the pay phone in the phone booth cost a paltry two cents. The new loafer design allowed just enough space for a penny in each shoe, equaling the cost of an emergency phone call. Thus, the penny and the loafer were united. (From BrooksBrothers)
One of our neighborhood squirrels was sitting under a tree in our backyard enjoying a very large snack. The snack was larger than he was, and after several nibbles he walked away. But he may have come back for it later and dragged it somewhere else. When I looked out the window the following morning the bread was gone.

My pretty girl enjoying afternoon sunshine. I was very happy to get this photo - with the sun on her face, the photo shows the colour of her eyes much better than in most of my photos.

i substituted the oven for the slowcooker as my oven would have been problematic having electric bars top and bottom flic.kr/p/2m3gaso i was worried i might overcook the base and undercook the rest - very uncertain
using the slowcooker
i had a few centimetres of water at the bottom so that the slowcooker wouldn't dry out
placed kitchen paper towels across the top to soak up condensation (i didn't want moisture finding it's way into the loaf)
then covered with the lid
the slowcooker was on for five hours on low from start to finish
a couple of times i did wipe moisture off the inside of the lid but never removed the paper towels. whether that was a good idea i don't know but it made me feel happier
when i finally removed the loaf from the slowcooker there was no water left in the bottom of the bowl
next time
maybe add a few extra centimetres of water at the beginning
check and top up during the cooking process
cook the loaf for slightly less time
or maybe do all three options :)
something for me to think about as and when

Loafer Mountain Trail to Santaquin Peak; Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest, Utah; July 2018
There's not a lot of shade on Mount Loafer, but there were just enough clouds to make for a pleasant day the entire hike.
Well, not cheesy enough really. It looks beautiful, is nice and soft if you can believe it ... and of course the jalapeños in there pack a punch. But, still not enough cheesiness for me....
It's a one day sourdough loaf. I think maybe why it is soft..plus..it really pouffed up .. but, It took alllllll day....
and, a fair bit of babysitting. Plus I made my life harder by mixing up a big enough batch of dough for two loaves ... and, I didn't want two plain ones... which meant grating cheese and chopping jalapeños... my hands were on fire.Yes, I know I could wear gloves if I had a pair around that were thin enough so that I could actually feel what I was doing...but, no... had to soldier on without. Then, of course I had to have it in two separate bowls...mix it differently, etc... I put the inclusions in after the second round of stretch and folds.... that was a ... hm...mmm ...let me think what it was. It was hard work dammit !! Just try including stuff in an already resistant dough.... there was a lot of trial and error and folding and squeezing and ..well, a lot of swearing too... but, I got it.
By the time it had risen it was way ahead of the plain guy....due to the 'vigour' with which I had to 'include' stuff I'm sure, as well as a bit of extra moisture from the jalapeños even though they were well drained and patted dry...
All told, I'm ecstatic with the loaf.... with the exception of it not tasting quite cheesy enough for me. I bet I could have sprinkled some grated cheese on top for the last few minutes of browning with the lid off the pot.
I purposely scored only deep enough to expose a nice belly ..no ear required for me. I prefer an earless loaf.
Oh, and.... the pot!! I do not own an oval Dutch Oven... and, decided batards are a better shape for slicing and using so had to get inventive. I was going to use a large casserole but, instead decided to try my turkey roasting pan.
It was perfect!!
Two layers of parchment ... middle shelf.....thin as the pan is compared to a Dutch Oven .... it turned out beautifully....
I bet you all already knew I was a Penny Loafer kind of guy, didn't you?
This has been my 'trademark' go-to footwear all of my adult life. I may wear other shoes for other occasions or for special projects but I feel most comfortable in a pair of these.
This was more difficult than I thought it would be. I had a hard time getting the image down to the size limit and still show what I wanted to show. And I was surprise how difficult to get a good photo of the leather surface. I discarded several that were too soft and blurry.
