Syringa vulgaris - A shrub with flowers in a light shade of purple. Leaves are opposite (occasionally in whorls of three) in arrangement, and their shape is simple and heart-shaped. This shrub and many others are on one border of our property in Carmel, New York.
Lilac is a common flowering shrub and the state flower of New Hampshire. Lilac comes in hundreds of varieties and the colours range from rich, burgundy purple to lilac, lavender, blue, white and even yellow. The scent of lilac flower varies from light floral to warm spicy tones.
These are my neighbours lilacs. We have a small lilac shrub but it isn't doing very well and certainly not flowering as purrrty as this one. I know they can take the winter beating but I think ours gets buried by too much snow...a good 4 feet of it, every winter. Bah, who really knows. Anyways, this past weekend I bought three more of them to add to the one we already have. The more the merrier perhaps? Hopefully they do well...I would love to be able to smell them. I love this time of year.
Arguably one of the Kruger's most colourful and striking birds the Lilac Breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is certainly not one to miss, they made a few appearances on my trip to the Kruger and were just as mesmerizing each time.
