The led went out. This photo shows the size of the board and the dead transistor. This is taken from the screen of a video microscope, on a borrowed Kodak digital camera, whiich is why there are some strange reflections (fluorescent lights) in it.The transistor was easy to identify and obtain, an FMMT617.
The original chrome strip inside the headlights is cast in clear plastic. We polish the front edge clear, then tape it off and paint the top of the strip, and eventually back light the strip with a very thin strip of closely packed Side Emitting LEDs.
A few weeks ago there was a post on the Adafruit blog about such a puke flash light. Today I happened to see this on TV.
