37610 leads 1Q61, the 15.38 Barlby Loop to Gascoigne Wood PLPR train across the River Ouse on Selby Swingbridge.

The original covered footbridge at Selby station is being restored and a new temporary footbridge installed at the river end of the station which has opened up this opportunity.

This must be what it feels like to have a pole.

37254 was on the rear.

BN E9Am 9922 leads a line of dead locomotives at NRE in Silvis, IL on October 25, 1998. The 9922 would eventually be sold to Larry's Truck and Electric and transferred to Ohio where it was ultimately scrapped.

BNSF 1105 leads loaded tanks 546 East out of Milwaukee seen here at Washington Street. 2 CSX GEs trail as this train will then go to the CSX in Chicago.

NBSR 6200 leads an extra '907' New Brunswick Southern Railway westbound freight, as they round a small S-Curve at Welsford, New Brunswick, along the McAdam Sub. This extra was a good size, at 87 cars. First time in a while that I've seen anything run on a Sunday. The only downfall is that it's the same consist that I caught last Monday, unit for unit. Same power, same weather, different locations.

Driving Motor Second (DMS) W51415 leads Bristol based three car set B435 into Birmingham New Street, 25th September 1982.

Unit History

On the 16th Oct. 1958 the British Transport Commission placed an order with The Pressed Steel Co., Linwood (Paisley) to build one hundred and twenty three vehicles of the standard Derby high-intensity design for Western Region London area suburban duties, these became Class 117. Interestingly although nominally a three car set only thirty nine trailer vehicles were built for forty two pairs of power cars and three sets entered service formed with Class 118 trailer vehicles of the same design as the Class 117 trailer vehicles but built by the Birmingham Carriage a Wagon Co. Although un-gangwayed when built, these were added later and by 1965 at least four sets had had them added to allow them to be formed into three or four car sets with the addition of a number of converted locomotive hauled stock. From about 1968 the rest had the corridor connections added. Delivery commenced in November 1959, with W51415 formed with W51373+W59480 (Class 118) entering traffic in October 1960, allocated to Reading, These three vehicles remained together until Western Region set 435 was transferred from London suburban duties to the West Country when Reading swapped 59480 for a Class 117 vehicle 59486 prior to its dispatch to Laira. The set transferred to Bristol in May 1982 and Tyseley in February 1988 where it became set T310 and then 117310 in 1992. The set transferred to Haymarket in April 1994 51415 was withdrawn in October 1996 and broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in the same month.

UP 8780 leads a short intermodal train west past the flag barn.

It's just too easy to shoot here with the drone and the barn makes a great photo backdrop.

CBRW 652 leads the Connell Turn north towards Warden, WA under cloudy skies.

After watching the interchange at Connell, WA, we decided that despite the larger storm clouds above, chasing them north would probably be a good idea anyway since I wasn't sure the next time I would be back on this line. The rain wasn't pouring, so most of the dirt roads through the farmlands weren't totally destroyed into mud yet so we drove north and got a couple of shots. I'm not sure why, but I decided to try to use my 35-16mm lens the whole time so I ended up with most shots looking similar to this one, although I was able to find a couple different angles. At this location, I kind of just jumped out of the car and went wide, trying to get the house in the back in the shot, not much else to it.

Leads a freightliner service through Wing

66568 leads 4L87 09.31 Tees Dock - Felixstowe North across the flooded Welney Washes (between Manea and Ely). 66557 was on the rear, but out of sight in this picture.

This was the first outing for my new camera, named as though it were the mark 3 version of what I'd been using for almost the last eight years (the mark 2 version), but in reality a new camera as it has been upgraded in so many ways. I'd been working in Ely, so took my camera with me in anticipation of a session here at sunset. The sun was still some way above the horizon when this appeared, not long before 4pm, but it had dropped into the cloud on the horizon by the time the usual train for sunsets appeared (4E20 from Felixstowe, over twenty minutes later) and the sky had lost its colour.

Unfortunately, for some reason the battery had run down on my monitor and, although I managed to set up the pole and take a couple of test shots, the monitor kept switching off. So I decided to do the shots from ground level, something I rarely do here now. I photographed both front and rear locos, changing the angle for the latter to include the girder bridge but not the trees on the right. However, with no containers right at the front (there were plenty everywhere else, including at the back) and the loco fitting perfectly between the sun and the small tree, I much prefer this one - and it's slightly different from others I've uploaded.

Manipulation notes: none at all - not even any straightening, cropping, lightening or darkening, increasing (or decreasing) the contrast, or enhancing the colours: it's straight off the camera! I had, however, set the camera to under expose by 1.3 stops based on the meter reading.

The Pacific National train operates daily, transferring steel coils from the Melbourne Freight Terminal, to the Bluescope works in Long Island.

A wagon wheel Grinstein SD70MAC leads BNSF Train H TULGAL1 09A as it crests the grade in Centennial Cut on the BNSF Brookfield Sub. This cream and green MAC has made several trips through the KC area lately, but today I ran across it completely by accident while headed east on 210 Highway. Looks right at home on Ex-BN rail.

This portion of railroad is the CB&Q Centennial Cutoff, 49 miles of which was opened in 1952 and cut 22 miles off the old Hannibal & St. Joseph route to Kansas City. The train is dropping down out of what is known as "Million Dollar Cut".

NR29 leads another NR Class and offline BL35 through Picton with 5BM4 Brisbane to Melbourne superfreighter.

If some of these photos look familiar, they probably are - I'm organising my photos from 2008, and taking the opportunity to rework some of them and either upload for the first time, or replace older photos.

Super Fleet #93 leads an eastbound intermodal into Joliet, under the signal bridge protecting the old Rock Island crossing at UD tower. At the time, FP-45 #93 was part of only 8 units wearing the reborn red & silver colors. Backlit blades and cowls again, but what can you do about what direction trains they throw at you. And 29 years later I'm real happy that I didn't ignore this one as not having perfect light, because I did that a lot as those who know me can attest to.

37421 leads the 15.37 Carlisle - Blackpool North test train through the reverse curves towards Coulderton on Thurs 9th August 2018.

This little road leads from the harbour into Fore Street, which is what the high street is often called in the south-west of England. St Ives, in the far west of Cornwall, is a very popular holiday resort renowned for its sandy beaches and its quaint narrow streets and alleyways. It has a famous artists' colony and was once an important fishing port. But now it relies mainly on tourism for its income.

SP 7673 leads a Kyle GP40 and two 6 axle units on Beaumont Pass, unfortunately my memory fails me as to where this is exactly. It seems to me this is a westbound near the top of the grade and beginning its downward descent to Colton and points west. I haven’t been here in more than 20 years so it is a bit fuzzy so feel free to chime in if you have a more accurate location.

A ratty former Santa Fe SD75 leads empty hopper train 851 south (railroad east) across the diamonds with the CSX Indianapolis Line at AC Tower in Marion, Ohio on a gloomy December morning.

Back in February, the 911 led train 239 twice, this being the first time.

A slug I met outside one night. He kept trying to get away from me but. . .well. . .he's a slug.

An SD70ACe-T4 leads UP train MDMNL-21 down Main Track 2 of the UP KC Metro Sub at 12th St heading to Leeds for a crew change.

To the left is the former site of Ford Assembly Plant at 10th and Winchester, which began construction in 1909 and finished two years later in 1911. This was the first Ford plant built outside of Detroit.

Ford later opened up a new plant within the Kansas City area at Claycomo, MO, which opened its doors in 1951 for military production. Eventually, consumer vehicles were then produced at the newer Claycomo plant beginning in January of 1957, and by the end of December of 1956, production ceased at the original Winchester plant.

The twin smokestacks with "Ford" in-laid on the bricks still remain standing here, serving as a reminder of a bit of Kansas City history. 12/21/24.

37610 leads 1Qxx 0233 Neville Hill-Derby RTC into it's destination on 16/02/19. 37219 is on the rear.

OHCR 4096 leads the eastbound run of ZVL down the Cambridge subdivision, with it's mock-up Conrail patch on the side of the engine. I shot and posted this over a year ago, but after losing a bet, I was forced to take down this and four of my other most popular photos on this page- but the terms of that bet have expired and I am slowly reposting these photos, just so I have them somewhere.

Soo 770 leads the BN Transfer as it rides above the Mississippi on the Camden Bridge in Minneapolis. This train will use the Loop Track at Shoreham and then will go into Northtown Yard. On the BN at Northtown it will go by the name Soo Shoreham Transfer.

CP has quit running this Humboldt to Northtown transfer in the meantime, but was still a morning fixture 16 years ago here in Nov. 1999.

Those Soo 700 series SDs were cool, with many looking old school Soo without dynamic brakes. Some had them added I believe, while others not by this point in the 90s.

IC 9628 leads the weekly Arnpior train back to Ottawa as it leaves Kinburn behind.

An SD45 leads a train past the remains of the collapsed tunnel #4 in the Tehachapis . Debris from the tunnel lining can be seen to the right of the last locomotive in the consist.

UP 8446 leads an impressive lashup of 8 EMDs as it makes its way south with the MNYPU (North Yard (Denver), CO - Pueblo, CO) near Fountain, CO.

The rear 5 units are SD9043MACs on their way to storage in Pueblo. I'm not the biggest UP fan on the planet (ask Wes Greer), but it's hard to pass up 8 EMDs, especially when the lead unit is an ACe. All I had with me was my iPhone, so I had to make due...

FURX 7240 leads a westbound grain train on the Dickinson Sub in Medora, ND. The second unit is BNSF 9277, the only EMD widecab unit to ever wear the H1 paint scheme.

I only had about 45 minutes to railfan in the dodgy sun and clouds on my mini-vacation to Medora, but I was able to catch two trains, the one above and this one:

www.flickr.com/photos/chris_paulhamus/10751243703/

Interestingly, that other shot was led by BNSF 9242, the Greenface SD60M, so in those two trains, I was able to catch two of the SD60M oddballs!

NR57 leads a second NR and AN on WB3 as it works away from Landrigans

CSX 8368 leads E547 east by Maysville. It’s not often that an SD40-2 leads revenue-earning trains on Class 1 railroads, so to find this one of C&O heritage on home rails hauling empty coal cars compelled me to give chase.

An Ohio Central tunnel motor leads the G&W Columbus & Ohio River's NKWA turn as it makes its way through downtown Columbus, Ohio and crosses the Scioto River. The train is making its way over the NS Columbus District as it heads towards Watkins Yard for interchange with Norfolk Southern.

BNSF 3022 leads a ABEABE train towards Wolsey SD. Once at Wolsey, they will work in town and return back to Aberdeen later in the evening.

KCS 4003 leads CPKC 261 north along the Marquette Sub. Here they are crossing a little split off from the Root River as the bluffs lay quiet in the background between Brownsville and La Crescent, MN

Leads a Lawley St to Felixstowe intermodal through Egleton

UP ES44AC no. 5467 leads the LMC40 back to Topeka from Lawrence on January 22nd. This is at MP 65 on the Kansas Sub, which is just west of Calhoun Bluffs, and along the Kansas River levee. I can't imagine how fun it is to run this thing backwards for the 30 mile trip back home.

Interestingly, the unit is equipped with removable ditch lights on this end, which allows them to run at track speed. However, as was pointed out the first time I posted a shot like this, these lights apparently burn out easily, as is nicely demonstrated here.

90019 'Multimodal' leads 3 class 325 EMUs past Lower Hatton while working 1s96, the 1605 Willesden (London) to Shieldmuir (Glasgow).

During the summer of 2019 mail trains were diverted from the west coast route to avoid engineering work at Acton Grange Junction. Although the diversionary route via Manchester's Castlefield corridor and the Chat Moss line was electrified, paperwork issues prevented the mail units from operating under their own power, requiring them to be dragged by class 90 locomotives.

Mail trains operated on the west coast route from its opening. As has been well documented, dedicated mail trains in the UK ceased in September 2024.

Photograph taken using a camera mounted pole.

4009 leads the southbound coal train through the sweeping curve at Brookman. When export coal was running this train was usually a 7 Am departure 3 days a week. It ran as 75 loads in a 3+3+1 configuration to combat two climbs of 3%.

56105 leads 3S14 11.38 Grimsby Town - York Works railhead treatment train, approaching New Barnetby. 66848 is on the rear. [Pole, 5/6 sections {~6.8m)]

This leg of the day's circuit first heads to Halifax (via Skellow, Wakefield Kirkgate and Mirfield), then returns to Wakefield Kirkgate (reverse) to run to Sheffield via Barnsley, and finally returns to York via Barnsley, Wakefield Kirkgate and Castleford. Incidentally, this train set off from Grimsby still showing as 3S13 on signalling maps, and therefore some reports for 3S13 on Realtime Trains have incorrect times; they are actually the times 3S14 went past, and 3S14 has lots of "no report" entries!

56105 was standing in for 66847 which had been sent for tyre turning; this was its third day working with 66848 and these wagons, but the loco is noticeably dirtier (on this side, at least) than when I'd photographed it closer to the background bridge two days previously (see here).

I'd originally planned to come to this spot on that previous occasion, but had spotted a group closer to the lime works and thought the sun might not have been lighting the front of the loco quite as well here - but I was wrong. So I decided to have another go, this location allowing a higher vantage point because you are not stood quite as much below track level. It was either come here or go to Scunthorpe, but I wanted to go north of the Humber for 3J51 (with 37s) and going to Scunthorpe would have risked missing it before its reversal at Hull (because I would have set off about twenty minutes later and had a longer drive).

Blue liveried 67003 leads the 5Z69 Northampton to Derby at Wichnor Jn on September 11th 2014. The train was comprising of DVT's 82129 & 82111. The trip was carried out for driver training purposes. Seemingly these trips were a waste of time as I've hardly seen these yellow Driving Van Trailers since!

43257 leads the 1904 St Pancras to Nottingham service past the rapeseed fields of Milton Earnest.

The HSTs were in the last few weeks of their 40 year reign on this, the Midland mainline route from London to the East Midlands and Yorkshire.

By this time the HSTs we're relegated to a small number of workings, which on weekdays shuttled between London and Nottingham.

With no further passenger work for these HSTs being likely, the scrapyard seemed a likely next destination. However, this was not to be and several of the locomotives, including this one, are operated in 2023 by Colas as traction for test trains.

Taken with the assistance of a pole.

AMTK 75 and AMTK 59 are the power on the westbound Winter Park Express. The train was delayed about 20 minutes waiting for a BNSF southbound to clear the diamond at 23rd Street. However, with no eastbound traffic opposing it, the train would still arrive in Winter Park one minute early!
