7028 leads 619 near Fernie, BC.
I wanted to catch this train at the other crossing east of this shot.
But slow BC drivers didn’t let us make it on time.
20305 leads 20302 off the Harrogate line at Armley Junction, Leeds, with 1Z49 the 'DRS Class 20 Farewell'. This tour certainly brought out the crowds, normally when I’m photographing around Leeds I don’t see another soul sharing the hobby, but yesterday I was jostling for position in a couple of spots.

UP 844 leads the Boise Turn west across the Snake River at appropriately named American Falls, ID on the Nampa Subdivision. Several things came together to make this a very memorable photo. First, it was socked in cloudy right up until about 10 minutes before the train's arrival. Second, the flow of the Snake through here is tremendous as the Corps of Engineers has all the gates open to deal with the runoff that resulted from record levels of snow in this part of the country. Third, the classic 4-8-4 Northern on a rare excursion made this an unforgettable shot. If you could only hear the 844's whistle in this photo!
BNSF #9669 leads N800 north (east) through Bangor. The train is seen here passing the restored former Pere Marquette station, which now houses the Amtrak station, a coffee shop, and some other small businesses. Amtrak's Pere Marquette makes daily stops here, morning and night.

CSX 8027 leads Q241 south under the soon to be extinct "modern" B&O CPL Gantry at Hamilton, OH.
With easy access and over 40 trains a day, Hamilton is a popular spot to view trains, made even more desirable in recent years thanks to its cluster of active B&O era Color Positioning Lights.
CSX over the course of several years prepped the area for eventual signal conversion. This week's visit proved to be somewhat depressing, as signal crews laid electrical wires and prepositioned machines to hoist new signals into place. Hamilton may remain a popular spot, but the "classic" feeling will no doubt be long gone.
DVT 82223 leads an East Coast service past Offord Cluny on the 20th of April 2013. The full rake is sporting possibly the drabbest livery ever to be seen on our network. I certainly didn`t bother photographing much in this scheme.
37407 Blackpool Tower leads the "Off the Beaten Tracks" mini-tour part of the UK Railtours "Carols at Norwich Cathedral" special along the "Acle Straight" between Acle station and the Branch Road overbridge at Stracey Arms. This section of the tour was the Norwich to Great Yarmouth leg of 1Z40 12.10 Norwich - Lowestoft (via Great Yarmouth), and 20142 Sir John Betjeman and 20189 were on the rear (standing in for 37423, which had failed the previous day with flat batteries). [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]
The full tour ran as follows:
1Z39 07.22 King's Cross - Norwich via the East Coast Main Line, Peterborough (reverse) and the Ely West Curve;
1Z40 12.10 Norwich - Lowestoft via Acle, Great Yarmouth (reverse), Berney Arms, Reedham (reverse), Lowestoft Yard (reverse) and Oulton Broad North Jn. (reverse);
1Z42 15.26 Lowestoft - Norwich;
1Z43 16.10 Norwich - King's Cross via the Ely West Curve, Peterborough, Spalding, Sleaford, Grantham and the East Coast Main Line.
The train was operated by Rail Adventure, with 37407 supplied by Europhoenix, and the coaches by West Coast Railways (which had acquired the assets of Riviera Trains a few months earlier, hence the blue and grey mark 2 coaches). 37407 is, of course, no stranger to this line as it was one of the DRS-owned 37s hired to Greater Anglia to operate the "short set" a few years ago.
I'd photographed 1Z39 west of March with the 20s leading, and had planned to chase it to somewhere near Prickwillow, given the schedule included a 43-minute wait on the Ely West Curve. However, with the train being 40 minutes late leaving Peterborough, I expected I'd not make it in time, and decided to drive straight to the other side of Norwich via the A47. I'd never been to this location before, but arrived in plenty of time to park in a nearby layby on the A47, walk a short distance back along the road and then down the path to the crossing.
The cloud was clearing from the north-west, and weather forecasts suggested it wouldn't break here until about midday, and then there would still be some cloud about for the rest of the day - and, as can be seen, this was the case. Those of us stood here were very lucky, because as the train passed Acle the sun was heading towards a cloud, and it began to run along its upper edge - but at the critical moment the sun had hit a "dip" and came out completely on almost the entire train (there's a slight shadow on some of the coaches towards the rear). The train had passed Acle four minutes late.
After this, I headed for the classic spot on the Berney Arms line very close to the former Breydon Jn., where a large gallery was gathering (in fact, it was quite tight parking and I had to tell someone they could block me in). Unfortunately, the train left Great Yarmouth two minutes late, and the sun went behind a cloud as it approached the divergence, but began to clear the cloud seconds before we began to press the shutter - meaning the leading locos were fully lit, the first couple of coaches partly in cloud, and the rest of the train in shadow.

BNSF 4141 leads ethanol train K477-02 through the control point at CH Cabin on CSX's Big Sandy Subdivision. Three BNSF units sandwich UP 1988, the MKT heritage unit, as they pass an array of C&O era signals still in service on the 125-mile long line between Catlettsburg and Elkhorn City, KY.
66847 leads 10 tanks past Risehow as 6S48 Port of Workington - Aberdeen.
Could've been better but it ran early and I only got half the pole up!!
43066 leads a northbound Midland Main Line express into Leicester, 15th June 1983. Midland Main Line HST duties commenced with the October 1982 timetable change using eight seven car sets (five from the Western Region and three new sets that were originally for Cross Country) allocated to Neville Hill. Over time the power cars used would be any from the Eastern Region fleet.
Locomotive History
43066 was built at Crewe Works as part of HST set 254006 for East Coast Main Line services and entered traffic in October 1977. Following the completion of ECML electrification in 1992 43066 was one of thirty one Class 43 power cars allocated to Neville Hill for Midland Mainline services and pounded up and down to London St Pancras from the East Midlands and South Yorkshire for twenty eight years. Since the end of Midland Main Line HST duties it has been used to power the DATS overhead line test train during 2021 43066 has been fitted with a Paxman VP185 engine in lieu of its original Paxman Valenta.

Norfolk Southern's Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit leads coal train 866 beneath the coaling tower north of Marion, Ohio. The structure was built to load coal into Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives at a location referred to as Harvey. PRR primarily used this route to haul coal trains from Columbus to the Lake Erie coal docks in Sandusky, Ohio. When Norfolk and Western bought Nickel Plate Road and Wabash in 1964, they also purchased the Sandusky District. This enabled N&W to run trains from the south to Bellevue.
18th July 2021 - Rail Operation Groups 37608 Leads 57312 (DIT) After failing earlier during the day with a rake of Mix match Ex Greater Anglia & Arriva Wag MK3's with 37884 trailing DOR. Working was 1Z89 Lichfield City - Buxton. The tour was around 130 minutes late by this point owing to the failure of 57312 at Castle Donnington.
37254 leads 37099 with 3J51 East Yorkshire and Wold Coast RHTT through a tree enclosed section of the Derwent Valley at Crambeck just above Kirkham Abbey on the 21st of October 2025.

This delightful walk leads to the path through the sand dunes and then the beautiful beach in Port Hood at the cottage where I spent a couple of fun days with my sister. The wild roses smell so sweet and the whole area was so fresh and green after all the rain we have had.. If you ever come to nova scotia and want a wonderful , warm (empty) beach, check out Port Hood! The Lighthouse Cottages are great places to stay. (more in comments below)
1450 leads its auto trailer towards Crowcombe in a scene that is like something out of the 1930s.

Union Pacific SD70M #2002 leads Norfolk Southern intermodal train 23N through Hiram,GA on its way to Memphis,TN from Atlanta. The #2002 was painted specially for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics more than a decade ago and still carries the torch throughout the country.
NICD 1001 leads CSS job AF-3 with cars for the customers at Olive. Looming in the background is one of the silos of the Gavilon Grain Facility, which is serviced by NS off the Chicago Line.
47828 leads 47805 on the RHTT through Weeley down to Clacton. Both Locos still reasonably clean on a great Autumn day.The vegetation stopped me getting the full consist in could do with a Chainsaw next time!
43159 leads through Toton yards on Sunday 29th October 1995 with 1V52, 09.40 Newcastle to Exeter, diverted down the Erewash Valley line due to engineering works.
In the background can be seen (L-R) Toton Centre signal box, the Upside hump control tower, and the wagon shops, all of which are history now.
Of note is that 43159 was the rear power car, with 43102 on the front, that created the world diesel speed record of 148.5 m.p.h. in November 1987, which still stands today.
43159 is still operational with 'The 125 group'.

An ex-Pennsy SD-45 leads a westbound freight through Canton for "Flare Friday", with the assistance of a Santa Fe GE and a blue CR EMD. This CR patch job is actually "more" of a PRR patch job than a PC one. While the unit had been patched with complete PC lettering and herald, it still wears it's PRR number, and I'm pretty sure it's also still wearing the PRR Brunswick Green for the most part. That engine is really that not dirty and I noticed numerous ex-PRR units where the Brunswick Green weathered into that brownish olive color that looks like dirt.
AMTK 167 leads AMTK 182 and the morning California Zephyr through the middle of Arvada. Specifically, the train just crossed Carr Street and is running alongside Oberon Road. The elementary school I attended is located just a few blocks north of this location. When I was kid, I would go out at recess, climb the monkey bars, and hope to see the top of a few Rio Grande tunnel motors leading a train over this stretch of track!

A meandering creek leads through mossy lined bluffs. The fall colors creating a warm glowing canopy. Floating autumn leaves and reflection of trees in the water. Hidden amongst the farm and prairie fields of Central Wisconsin is a bit of a peculiar anomaly. There lies a 40’ deep natural gorge that looks as though it belongs in the Pacific Northwest. Steep mossy sides with slow moving pools littered with fall foliage. The currents create rhythmic eddy’s within the scenic canyon. A fall day such as this brings an amazing palette of colors below the warm canopy. Baraboo, Wisconsin

SD45 6553 leads SD9 6191 and B30-7A 4074 out of Northtown with train TCM (Twin Cities - Memphis) on September 30, 1984. This was one of the handful of trains at this time that was still carrying a Frisco inspired train symbol.
BNSF 6041 leads a southbound coal train through the S-curve just south of Monument, CO.
A little more that a month after a thumb wound/surgery has rendered me virtually one-handed and unable to use my DSLR for a bit, I'm still able to get out and push my old, obsolete Canon 300HS point-and-shoot to its limits. The trick was turning off as many of the dumbed-down auto features and taking manual control as best I could. The biggest upgrade was with the white balance setting. I shed the auto white balance and opted for the daylight setting and it's made a huge difference. Overall, for the limits in equipment and being one-handed, I'm pretty happy with the results!
NPR 3502 leads a 4 GP35 power pack and a 78-car grain train east toward Fordville, ND on the former SOO Wheat line.
This was a great day of railfanning, one that should never had happened. I was supposed to be picking up a KC-135 from the depot in San Antonio, but it had a leaking fuel tank and would not be ready to go for a few more days. We were able to fly home commercial the evening prior which afforded me the opportunity to chase the Northern Plains Railroad in the morning and BNSF later in the afternoon:

An ET44AC leads coal loads out of Peach Creek as CSX C207 bound for export from Newport News. The train is splitting the C&O signals at W.E. Baber in Baber, West Virginia. This was the location of the Baber siding that served a coal loadout, but the loader has since been demolished and the siding removed.

5411 Leads a manifest east at Price. Unfortunately this was at a time where I was seeing increasingly dirty units, especially the nose. This was at least 5 years before buying the SP.
488 leads the first of two cuts of cars up the west slope of Cumbres Pass, seen here at the State Line Crossing of Route 17, situated roughly halfway up the pass. Sister 484 is pushing from the rear.
Upon reaching the 10,023-foot summit, the two crews would tie down the cars and return light to Chama for another cut, just as the D&RGW did in days of old.
BNSF 9100 leads a horribly-faded H2 MAC north through the Greenland Open Space just north of Palmer Lake, CO.
BNSF has been running monster coal empties on the Joint Line lately where they combine two empties into one typically running 2x4x2 presumably to save on crews, but this was not one of the monsters...
CBRW 652 leads the Connell Turn north towards Warden, WA under cloudy skies.
After watching the interchange at Connell, WA, we decided that despite the larger storm clouds above, chasing them north would probably be a good idea anyway since I wasn't sure the next time I would be back on this line. The rain wasn't pouring, so most of the dirt roads through the farmlands weren't totally destroyed into mud yet so we drove north and got a couple of shots. I'm not sure why, but I decided to try to use my 35-16mm lens the whole time so I ended up with most shots looking similar to this one, although I was able to find a couple different angles. At this location, I kind of just jumped out of the car and went wide, trying to get the house in the back in the shot, not much else to it.

Rail Operations Group (ROG) 37510 'Orion' leads 6344 + 8 Ex-LNER MK3s (42122, 44031, 42104, 42161, 42171, 42172, 42219, 44056) + 6338 and classmate 37611 'Pegasus' past Waterbeach, 5Q76 0807 from Ely Papworth Sidings to Newport Docks (Simsgroup).
Due to issues with 37510, the train was taken into Cambridge Reception Sidings, where 37611 would run around the train and provide motive power for the rest of the leg to Newport. On attempting to leave Cambridge with 37611 leading, an unsolicited brake application halted the train around the Cambridge South Junction area; as a result blocking all traffic south of Cambridge for around 20 mins. The fault was then rectified to an extent which allowed the train to shunt back into Cambridge Reception Sidings. After further inspection, the fault was fully rectified, allowing the train to finally get underway towards Newport (around 124 minutes late).
Amtrak 24 leads the westbound Southwest Chief past the tiny town of Watrous, minutes away from its next station stop at Las Vegas, NM. The semaphores that protected the east siding have long been replaced, so the only classic "prop" here is the Santa Fe era station sign.
An SD75I leads the way and an Ex-CREX ES44AC trails on CN Train A43291-22 headed south through Carbondale on the CN Centralia Sub. on Main Track 1, passing the displayed Illinois Central caboose and GP11 at the depot.

PC 1783 leads Cedar Hill-Oak Pt turn GB-2 through Noroton Heights CT on a gray day in the early 1970's.
The transition period from NH to PC is a special time for me as I was developing my own interest in trains aside from what I inherited from my father.
This year January 1 2025 would have been my fathers 99th birthday.
I chose to post this picture because on similar gray day my father, my brother Don and I chased an almost identical lash up on I-95 North from New Rochelle NY, were we first observed the train coming off the Hell gate Line.
Many of the local NH fans weren't enamored of the PC at all, so there are not as many photos of this period, when hand me down F7's and GP9B units were based in Cedar Hill.
I also remember seeing them run north on the Hartford Line as well as into NYC.
In the early post-merger NH days before the inception of the Metropolitan Region, there was still a fair amount of local freight being gathered up in the Bronx, Bridgeport and the towns along the line to NH.
GB-2 would not only forwarded this freight to Cedar Hill , on the weekends it also ferried local yard power to and from New Haven resulting in monster lash-ups on Saturday morning and Sunday evening.
The train also ran reliably in midday ...until the Metropolitan Region focus on passenger operations pushed it to an over night -early morning schedule.
Special thanks to Rob Pisani for providing me a copy, and Jim Bruno for taking this amazing shot and preserving a version of a core childhood memory
for me.

Storms move east over the Continental Divide in the background as BNSF C44-9W No. 5273 leads a 4 hour and 50 minutes late California Zephyr with two Amtrak P42DC's trailing as the train heads west out of Granby, Colorado along Union Pacific's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision on September 4, 2016. Three Iowa Pacific Private Cars bring up the rear of the train.
