CN 8850 leads a long freight down the Canadian National Superior Subdivision over the St. Croix River. The river starts just north of here at Upper St. Croix Lake and meanders south to Gordon, Wisconsin and southwest to Danbury, St. Croix Falls, Stillwater, and finally Prescott. I enjoy seeing the river near its headwaters and think about the journey the water takes to get to the Mississippi.
Thanks to the efforts of one rail worker, railfans around VA got to witness UP #2610 lead NS 203 from Rutherford, PA through Virginia en route to its' destination of Inman Yard in Atlanta.
CN 3004 leads a small westbound '406' freight shortly after going through the town of Sussex, New Brunswick. They were only 264 axles, the smallest they've run in a while. Might have something to do with the temporary part shut down of the Irving Refinery in Saint John. I don't remember seeing any crude oil on this train.
This is a new location for me. A special thanks to Tim Stevens for taking a photo around here when he came to visit. I decided to try it out...turned out pretty good.

This beautiful staircase leads to the library.
The new buildings of Worcester College were begun in 1720 from the proceeds of the Alcorne bequest (£798 0s. 3d.) From sketches and notes now in the library it would appear that the central block comprising the library, chapel, and hall was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, and that the west front of the library was modelled on a building at Saintes. There is a sketch of a building like this front but more ornate labelled in Hawksmoor's hand 'Le Pont de Xaintes', and another design has the note 'Another way not so good as ye Arc de Xaintes' in the same hand. The final designs of the whole block have notes again in Hawksmoor's hand: 'Vide the antiquity at Bordeaux.'

Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad GE EP-5 motor # 371 leads a passenger train around a curve while entering the station on platform track at Glenbrook, Connecticut, 1970. As you can see motor # 371 is really in need of a paint job at this time and perhaps it will receive the PC black paint scheme. The catenary support structures are of the arched design in this area of the electrified main line system. At this location one of the typical hairpin fences separates the tracks that operate in the opposite direction. Also interesting is that the forward pantograph is being used because it appears that the rear pantograph may be missing. Bob Hughes took this photo.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

This photograph beautifully captures a narrow alley in the historic center of Siena, Italy. The cobblestone street leads uphill beneath an archway, where a family walks hand in hand, creating a tender contrast with the towering medieval architecture surrounding them. The deep perspective framed by the dark brick walls enhances the feeling of enclosure, a common trait in Tuscan cities where centuries-old buildings rise closely side by side. Above the arch, the rooftops and spires of Siena’s famed cathedral subtly emerge, adding a sense of grandeur and continuity between past and present.
Siena’s historical center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a remarkably preserved example of a medieval city. Its urban fabric and Gothic architecture reflect the height of civic, political, and artistic development achieved during the 13th and 14th centuries, when Siena rivaled Florence in wealth and power. The visible brickwork in the image, with its warm, earthy tones, is typical of Sienese construction, made of the region’s abundant clay. The pointed towers and narrow windows further evoke the austere yet elegant style that defines much of Siena’s architecture.
Culinary traditions in Siena are deeply rooted in its medieval heritage as well. As visitors wander through these very alleys, they are likely to encounter the aromas of traditional Tuscan cuisine wafting from nearby trattorias. Dishes such as pici (a thick handmade pasta), ribollita, and wild boar stew are commonly served, often accompanied by local Chianti wine. And no Sienese experience would be complete without sampling panforte or ricciarelli — dense, sweet confections made with nuts and candied fruits, recipes that date back to the Renaissance.
Architecturally, this alleyway scene embodies Siena’s genius for integrating civic structure with urban design. The use of arches, passageways, and layered facades gives the city a distinctive verticality and rhythm. The backdrop of the cathedral's striped Gothic spires in the distance signals the heart of religious and cultural life in Siena: the Duomo di Siena, known for its polychrome marble, intricate façade, and masterpieces by artists like Pisano, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Every corner of Siena is a convergence of lived history, sacred art, and daily tradition — and this photograph quietly, but powerfully, tells that story.

She might like to be acknowledged, but that does not mean that she will share her knowledge, unfortunately she is happy to leave us in self-knowledge that is mis-knowledge. The Triple Form of Hekate is full within the three phases and yet there is also a Forth Form. Her light in the darkness includes sparking, lighting, spluttering and also none igniting. Her symbol of three Moon in reflected illumination is also a symbol brightly obscuring her other form within the Dark, or New Moon. She is happy in the dark with her unilluminated vision and her brightness in the Full Moon also knows the New Moon visible on the horizon for just a few moments. Called for and sought at the Trivia Three Ways and crossroads also asked for and answered within the home where all junctions are started and ended and where insight and protection are often most required. From the ignition of Fresh Flame to Full Light through Dying Embers and within Extinguished Ashes she is never absent always available if you call on her without subconscious desire, rather with intent to take her hand with resolve to lead you on towards where you aspire.

40145 leads the 5Z18 1949 Oban to London Euston, with 90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' on the rear, past Milton Malsor. The sun had barely risen which unfortunately meant the lighting wasn't the best, although it did mean the headcode lights were clearly visible.
37521 & 37667 had taken the train from Oban to Crewe where 40145 & 90002 took over. 40145 lead the train south to London Euston and sounded amazing climbing out of Northampton.
The consist was: 6311, 17159, 10520, 3100, 310, 99993, 6706, 6705

MLY WDM-3A 18978 leads the twin charge for route diverted 15024 Yeshvantapur - Gorakhpur Express out of Ammuguda...
MBTA 1029 leads outbound Keolis train 1003 south on the Middleboro Line passing a Mass Coastal train waiting on the controlled siding at Pilgrim Interlocking.
43102 leads 1C43 1136 Sheffield to St Pancras, heading south through Flitwick, resplendent in the 1980s 'Swallow' livery.
East Midlands Trains have returned 43302 to this livery, for the final few months of operations on the Midland Mainline, and reverted it back to 43102, before it is reportedly destined for NRM York. This InterCity125 powercar was one of the pair which set the world diesel rail speed record at 148.5mph in 1987.

06/03/2020 90019 'Multi Modal Leads Ex-LNER 82231 & 90036 'Driver Jack Mills' on 3K83 Blackpool North - Crewe Carriage Sidings L&NWR seen here passing through Kirkham, where it was scheduled to stop, however it passed through at speed. These trains were run in prepration for the new services to be operated by Grand Central which was due to start in the May timetable change to London Euston, unfortunately due to COVID-19 pandemic being declared only a couple of weeks later these services never came to fruition and were subsequently knocked on the head. A real shame as the sight of 90's on Loco Hauled stock on the West Coast Mainline would've been a welcome return.
VTR 431 leads B&R along the Batten Kill River in Sunderland, Vermont. The red of the VTR's paint scheme and the blue of the GMTX definitely pop against the wintery backdrop. The weather definitely wasn't sure what it wanted to do as it varied from sun to snow squalls with some close to white out conditions driving down the mountain into North Bennigton earlier that morning.
L265 leads a pair of 22 Class upgrade through Jannali Station with loaded Manildra Group flour train 8982 from Manildra to Bomaderry. From memory this was the second or third last Manildra to Bomaderry hauled by ARG prior to Pacific National taking over the contract.
This is a re-upload of an older photo which was poorly cropped and post processed. It was not the planned composition, as a second after this frame was fired, an up Tangara slid into platform one and blocked the shot. Full disclosure, I've removed a distracting overhead support (not actually attached to anything) from the top left corner of the shot.
BNSF 7716 leads the Southbound M-BARSDG through Sorrento Valley, on a clear Winter morning. Known to local railfans as the "Daygo", this manifest is an unusual sight in the daytime hours along the Surfline. In this particular case, a BNSF Officers Special was present along the Surfline, causing BNSF officials to run a late manifest to demonstrate the freight capabilities along the line.
From the 2020 archive. A pair of DB Skodas, 90036 'Driver Jack Mills' and 90028 'Sir William McAlpine', on the approach to Acton Bridge in charge of 4M25, the 07.05 from Mossend Euroterminal to Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal.
BNSF 2317 leads a long string of baretables south out of Grand Forks, ND on the Hillsboro Sub.
This train came off the Devils Lake Sub, which, at the time, was mostly jointed rail and acted as a relief valve for traffic if things got too busy or bogged down on BNSF's main line to the Minot west of Fargo. During surges, we'd see stacks, racks, and baretables running the Minot-Grand Forks-Fargo routing like this one.
Penn Central ex Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 # 4877 leads a westbound passenger train on a platform track past tower SS71 and through Devon Junction, Connecticut, 1969. It appears that some MOW work is being performed to the right. The two main line tracks that turnout to the left head to Derby Junction with a connection to the Maybrook line and then up to Waterbury. The front train line is leaking some water vapor from the steam line. This train is Penn Job and will head to Pennsylvania Station in New York City. This photo came from my collection of negative scans. This photo has been cropped and modified from the original to improve its appearance.

A small stream leads to Loch Leven. Glencoe Village, on the southern bank of the River Coe where it enters Loch Leven in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands. In the distance you can see the Mountains of Buachaille Etive Mor, Bidean nam Bian, and Ben Nevis Mountains.

EMD SD60 9071 leads a M of W train eastbound on the BNSF Sand Hills Sub passing MP 146.5 just out of Litchfield, NE. This U KNDWLM5 18 from Kindred, NE heading for Wilmar, MN is the 3rd eastbound in a fleet of 8 heading into Ravenna for a crew change and then a slow go on into Lincoln Hobson Yard. This EMD SD60 became CN SD60 5427 and is still active today in early 2020.
CSXT #792 leads coal train T21122 east under the eastbound signals at Alderson, WV on the morning of May 22, 2021. Alderson was settled in 1777 by "Elder" John Alderson a frontier missionary who organized the first Baptist church in the Greenbrier Valley. Alderson is the location of the first federal prison for women opened in 1927.
43035 leads 1B18 0904 Aberdeen to Edinburgh into its destination at Waverley. 43138 was rear power car.
On the left a pair of 158 units wait to leave with 1L09 1134 to Perth.

With the same pair on as last weekend, but this time the other way round, 66702 Blue Lightning leads 6G53 Bescot Up Engineers Sidings to Queens Park (AC).
7106 leads an empty Pacific National coal train through Coppabella Staging Yard after a quick crew change. 7107 was also assisting as a mid train unit.
An empty One Rail coal train is visible in the stabling yard with two ORN class locomotives on the lead. Similarly an empty BMA coal train is visible in the stabling yard with BMACC005 on the front and BMACC003 mid train.

HST power car 43084 leads Grand Central's 1A60 06.41 (I think) Sunderland - King's Cross past Yaxley (south of Peterborough).
I'd come here for rail blue-liveried 87002 hauling a rake of Cargo-D mark 2 air-con coaches (in matching BR blue and grey livery) on a southbound charter train - see this photo - as well as a class 92 and then class A4 steam loco Bittern (with two tenders) on separate northbound charters (the latter shot wasn't so good), but also photographed several other things between.
Grand Central had begun passenger operations just a year and a half previous (a week before Christmas 2007), using a fleet of three 2+5 HSTs on services between Sunderland and London; by now, the company was operating three return trips per day (which required two trains in service), but was about to introduce a fourth, using a class 180 "Zephyr" DMU acquired from First Great Western. The HST power cars, having been stored out of use for several years after being stood down by Virgin Cross Country, were very unreliable at this time. They eventually underwent a major overhaul which included replacing the original Paxman "Valenta" engines with the same MTU engines fitted to those operated by the East Coast Main Line franchisee, and all six power cars were renumbered in the 434xx series (so 43084 became 43484). After Grand Central stopped using HSTs at the end of 2017, they moved to East Midlands Trains, and after their use on the Midland Main Line ceased the power cars were acquired by Rail Adventure, which usually uses them in pairs coupled back-to-back as conventional locos.
Grand Central's original livery was overall black, with silver or bronze passenger doors, bronze indicating first class accommodation. The introduction of the class 180s (now known by the First Group name of "Adelante") saw the addition of an orange stripe to the livery (perhaps reflecting GNER dark blue with a red stripe), the shade of orange being changed several years later.

Merseyrail 507007 leads a 6-car formation out of the tunnel and cutting from Liverpool Central with the 13.50 Southport - Hunts Cross.
* This is now the site of Brunswick Station built in 1998 and is close to the original Brunswick station built by the Cheshire Lines Committee in 1874. The Liverpool Overhead Railway passed over the line near Brunswick Shed and into a tunnel to access the Dingle terminus on a bridge a couple of hundred metres behind me.
BNSF 7059 leads the M-SUPMIN west near Powell, ND on the Devils Lake Sub.
Lots of Burlington Northern on this train with a pair of Cascade Green leaders as well as some green Burlington Northern cars up front.
The SUPMIN and it's counterpart were pretty much always good bets for nice power. The train would keep its power in Superior for the return trip to Minot. Sometimes these trains would run with the same power sets for multiple trips but not always. This was a one-time catch of this duo for me...but this is shot no. 2 of 3 on this train's journey west.
Conrail 2708 leads an Eastbound at East Conway in Baden, PA on November 7, 1992. It was rare by 1992 to find a U23B in service on Conrail. When there was a need for power Conrail would activate some of their stored U23B's and GP35's and use them mostly in local service. This was probably either WIMJ or HNPI, trains that originated within 40 miles of Conway.
CP 8826 leads a hard-to-characterize train down the Detroit Lakes Subdivision south of Brooks in Red Lake County. The composition suggests this is loaded crude oil CPKC 576 but has a mixture of loaded grain, tankers, and assorted covered hoppers. Is it 576 mixed with J98? 440? 240? Just 576? I have no idea.
