In what could easily pass for a corporate photo train, U444 crosses the Catawba River at Marion, NC with a string of empty company hoppers off the FEC in Jacksonville, FL. The train is bound to load at Typo near Hazard, KY.

Soviet 4-8-4 P36-0110 leads a 4-car passenger special through the autumn countryside near Berendeyevo on the way to the town of Pereslavl-Zalleskiy.
The occasion was a trial run of a possible new tourist route to Pereslavl-Zalleskiy, which is around 2.5 hours outside of Moscow and is included in Russia's 'Golden Ring' list of tourism destinations. While the majority of the route is along the electrified Trans-Siberian mainline, the 20-kilometer branch into town hasn't changed much since it was built in the 50's, with wooden ties and no overhead wires. Interestingly enough, even though a passenger station was built (currently abandoned), the branch never saw a passenger train until yesterday.
Prior to the test run, significant track work had to be done and a wooden passenger platform was constructed. And while nothing has formally been announced yet, local railfans have their fingers crossed that this might become a regular occurrence.
UP 8074 leads a long MPUNY (Pueblo, CO - North Yard (Denver), CO) manifest into Castle Rock, CO. This train was running 4x1.
Even though it's the Joint Line, BNSF trains heavily outnumber their Armour Yellow counterparts, but it was a Union Pacific morning on this particular day. The MPUNY met its counterpart, the MNYPU, a bit earlier on the siding at Monument, and, directly off to my right on Main 1, a UP CSUX coal train bound for Colorado Springs was working its way south.
43068 leads this Virgin Cross Country HST set past Teignmouth. 4th September 2001. Rich Turd Branson eventually replaced these trains with his awful voyagers. However, when the fantastic news broke that he lost his franchise in 2007 Cross Country trains reintroduced a few sets to work Cross country services to and from Plymouth and Penzance.

NKP 765 leads the Sunday afternoon leg of the Joliet Rocket past an excited crowd of both railfans and just curious onlookers on Metra's Rock Island Line, bound for Chicago LaSalle St.
It doesn't matter how old you may be, steam hauled trains will always fill you with joy.
BNSF 9301 leads the westbound Denver-Provo manifest at the west switch of Cliff. In the Rio Grande days, the west switch of Cliff was interesting as it was a "Y" switch. There was a bit of a diverging both for the main and the siding. UP has reconfigured it so the only turn is toward the siding.
47812 leads off the 'Old Road' on the 5E27 Castle Donnington-Rotherham Booths scrap move, Masborough, 17.8.20. They went to the Thryburgh branch to reverse.

Union Pacific SD70AH No. 8918 leads a Roseville to Roper merchandise train through Salt Lake City on June 16, 2018. When the train length exceeded the length of sidings on the Shafter Sub, UP routed the MRVRO via Ogden.
Fresh NS 7289 leads NS 25V under CP PACK's eastbound signal bridge.

A B32-8WH leads a 1.5 hour late #1333 out of Lake City. These locomotives have mostly been relegated to yard duty for many years, and do not lead trains out on the main very often. I believe the last time one lead out here was in 2015.
MKT GP40 leads two more MKT units north through New Holstein with train #245 on a nice March 31st 1986 afternoon. By this time the SOO merger has been consummated, but MKT power is still running through like the old times on the Milwaukee.

CR 6674 leads a westbound under the iconic stone bridge that once spanned the Pittsburgh Line at Port Royal, PA. This bridge was removed and replaced with a modern structure a few years back. Note the three tracks still in service, as well as the PT 151 signal masts had yet to be installed.

A freshly rebuilt SD70ACU leads another SD70ACU as they cruise down the #2 leading 28N past the old B&M era searchlights at Farley's. This was the fourth train in about three hours, an unusually productive morning in Pan Am's District 3. The pair of rebuilt SD90MACs were a nice break from the normal parade of Norfolk Southern and Pan Am GEs that are normally seen on District 3.
BNSF 8069 leads a trio of EMDs (to include a former SOO SD60) west through Fargo, ND with the M-NTWGFD (Northtown, MN - Grand Forks, ND).
This was a good day trackside. I also caught the other 'M' train bound for Grand Forks, the M-DILGFD with a nice Bluebonnet leader:
www.flickr.com/photos/chris_paulhamus/40562320590/
The 'M' trains usually ran with nice power, but it wouldn't be too long into the future when the widecabs would dominate. I was short-timing it here as I only had about 3 months left in the northern plains before moving to Colorado for my next assignment. I think I left at about the right time when it came to the power situation...
BN 9764 leads Amtrak train 9 westbound at the summit of Homestake Pass on August 27, 1972. I followed this line in 79 and sure wished I'd seen something like this up there or anything for that matter. This weeks Saturday Night Special was photographed by R.R. Harmen, Chuck Schwesinger collection.
New Haven Railroad DER-1c class ALCO DL-109 diesel electic locomotive # 0709 leads a 3 car suburban passenger train in Providence, Rhode Island, early 1950's. This location may not be Providence but indications are that it is. It appears that there is a heavyweight combine baggage-coach and two general coaches on this train. The season appears to be winter. Check out those interesting power poles with the special wire insulator mountings.

Wall painting: a donkey driver leads the donkey to the granaries (2118-1980 B.C. First Intermediate Period) Tomb of Iti and Neferu - Gebelein/Northern Necropolis - tempera on straw and mud plaster. Egyptian Museum, Turin
Iti, the chief of the King's troops" and "Treasurer of the King" and Neferu, the beautiful bride. This is precisely what the woman's name means: Beautiful!
The paintings are a tale of everyday life; created with the tempera technique, they were detached from their original location by the technique of tearing and reassembled here, in this tomb: they are, therefore, originals and not copies. There is one depicting the sacrifice of an ox in which even the smallest details are given to make them visible. Even in the scene of transporting grain to the silos, the donkey is reported in every detail; it carries two sacks, but the one on its left side is upturned ... this is to allow the funerary priest to make it real with his magic ritual.
Numerous scenes of daily life are reproduced, such as the milking scene in which the cow caresses the calf, and there are scenes of offerings to the owners of the tomb by a servant portrayed in smaller dimensions: bread and other foodstuffs constitute the main offering for the soul of the deceased, but also and for the deities.
In the early years of Conrail, one never knew what might show up. Here a very crazy lashup leads an eastbound freight through what's left of Erie Lackawanna's Literary Street Yard. Leading the way is a unit that's on home rails being an ex-EL C424, helped along by two ex-PC geeps, and ex-PC Alco, and a borrowed switcher from the Lake Terminal Railway. This yard has long been gone and has been serving as an aggregates facility for Shelly Materials, but the last link of the Towpath Trail will finally make it's way through here by the end of 2018 if things go as planned.
CTA 6364 leads a northbound Jackson Park/Howard train out of the subway at Armitage in May 1986. The cars are really run down and are at the very end of their service life on the North-South. Despite their rundown appearance, they still turned in a respectable performance.
Amtrak ACS-64 #610 leads a southbound Regional train under the signals at Winans in Halethorpe MD, October 7, 2022. Meanwhile, the Maryland Lottery begs the motorists on parallel US 1 to play their latest Ravens themed "scratch-off" game cards.

GP38 #2001 leads a westbound manifest at Laurel MD on the Capitol Subdivision sometime in September 1996. The 2001 was a "straight" GP38 built for the B&O in October 1967 carrying number 3801 originally. It now works for GMTX as their 2687.

When you reach for the stars, you are reaching for the farthest thing out there. When you reach deep into yourself, it is the same thing, but in the opposite direction. If you reach in both directions, you will have spanned the universe.

BNSF 3814 leads a southbound manifest through Colorado Springs, CO.
Well, strike two. I was here the weekend prior hoping to catch some fall colors, but I was a bit early as the colors hadn't quite hit peak then. Well, they still haven't a week later here, but it's a nice teaser for what's to come!
Black River SW1200 1202 leads a Maryland & Delaware Centreville Line train past the neatly restored station in Sudlersville, MD. In tow are cars for Perdue in Roberts and also for customers near the end of the line in Centreville. 1202 was not well-liked by MDDE crews, but it got the job done...sort of. The station was built in 1885 by the Queen Anne's and Kent Railroad which later became part of Pennsylvania Railroad's expansive operations on the Delmarva Peninsula.

CP 2246 leads the US portion of Canadian Pacific's annual Holiday Train across the Mississippi River in Sabula, Iowa just as it begins to get dark outside. I have a few salvageable pictures of when it was completely dark out, so expect to see those eventually, maybe. Taken on 12/2/18.

Denver & Rio Grande Western K-28 #477 leads a mixed train across the Animas River Bridge at Milepost 495.25 as she arrives in the little mining town of Silverton, Colorado, where a little October snow has begun to fall.
This image was captured during an October 2024 photo shoot on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, organized by Trains Magazine. The locomotive pictured is actually K-28 #473, lettered as one of her long-lost sisters, #477, which was sent to the White Pass & Yukon during World War II and sadly, did not survive her hard service in Alaska. The bridge pictured in the foreground is the famous timber bridge, which carried the Silverton trains for decades until it was replaced just recently, in 2024 with the more modern, steel and concrete structure that carries the tracks now. At least for now, the railroad appears content to let the old bridge remain in place.
