The path of light leads you on superb journeys even after Sunset and with a little help from tall flora 6 Film Frames
The amount of light and wind was changing the landscape before me. The light was diminishing in illumination and expanding in tone. With some edits here are some samples of the wonders working their ways within my paths.

Chessie System, B&O GP40 3701 leads a blue sister through Hammond at Calumet Ave.on the B&OCT in August 1981.
66 519 leads the Chiltern Metals RHTT towards Northwood Hills having not long passed through Pinner. The London Underground Metropolitan Line shares its tracks with Chiltern Railways on this stretch as far as Amersham. Also, this route is heavily tree lined, hence the need for trains such as these!
WNYP 637 leads the northbound Driftwood turn through Port Allegany with Pennsylvania's hills in the background.
FURX 8116 leads a long stack train up out of the Red River Valley of the North through the sweeping S-curve in Lake Park, MN.
This S-curve was a favorite to catch morning action as eastbounds made their way out of Dilworth along the famed Staples Sub. This particular morning was quite the gem as MN Chris (aka railtalk) and I were treated to not only this train but also these as well:

Ah, the mid-2000s...what a treat when it came to standard cab goodness! It was for action like this that I would venture the hour-plus drive from Grand Forks, ND...rarely was disappointed after a day along the Staples Sub!
CSX 6071 leads the daily Cincinnati - Winchester road local, better known as C701, through the former L&N searchlights at North Cabin near Winchester, KY. The crew are just minutes from their destination of Patio Yard, where they will spot some cars before heading to the hotel.
BNSF 6391 leads a northbound coal empty around the frozen lake in Palmer Lake, CO.
Almost a week prior, Palmer Lake received upwards of 19" of snow, much of it still sticking around albeit in a heavier, wetter, compacted version than what fell from the sky.
BNSF 5544 leads eastbound taconite loads towards the ore dock at Allouez, WI along the former Great Northern Mesabi division outside Cloquet, MN
CSX GP40-2 6848 leads CSX SD40-2 8380 and CNW SD40-2 6805 on Wisconsin Wlectric WEPX coal loads from Consol's Bailey Mine at Time, PA at MP M11.5 on the Monongahela Railway's Manor Branch on March 24, 1990.
At the time of this photo the Consol Bailey Mine was the only mine served by the Manor Branch and was loading about 4 trains every 24 hours. Later the additional underground Enlow Fork and Harvey Mines were developed adjacent to Bailey to also mine high-Btu bituminous coal reserves in the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in different directions and the entire set of loadouts and preparation plants is now called the Consol Energy Pennsylvania Mining Complex. Today 8-10 trains are loaded in 24 hours at the sprawling site located at 39.973312 -80.412575 which is larger than the island of Manhattan. It is the largest underground coal mining operation in North America.

This passageway leads up to Kalmar Castle. I actually did photograph it almost 4 years earlier. Do check it out, and notice how much I have improved over time.

BNSF 4366 Leads CPKC 2-231 on their way to start working Walkerville JCT. Just the same time last year, I have also gotten a BNSF H2 leading a 131. But this time they added two BNSF gevos after finishing work here as this leader didn't have any PTC...
ex LNER power car 43299 leads the New Measurement Train as it arrives at Temple Meads leading 1Z18 1539 Paignton to Taunton on 7th May 2021
43062 was out of sight at the rear.
NS Dash-9 9636 leads a westbound stacker through South Fork, PA on the west slope of the Pittsburgh Line
BNSF 4327 leads a train up BNSF main 1 at first light as the sun's light paints the landscape on a mid-December morning in Cajon Pass.

On Father’s Day at Thornleigh, leased Railpower unit CLP13 leads C505 & C507 as they haul a short rake of empty cement wagons on crew training run 4140 Boral Kooragang to Clyde. This service will eventually replace Pacific National’s 4124 Newcastle to Clyde service later this year once the contract expires with Boral.
387205 leads the 1T39 1425 King's Lynn to London King's Cross into Downham Market - 29/05/2022.
I came down here on the previous Friday to see the monthly test train & was pleasantly surprised to see some of the lineside vegetation had been trimmed back a bit. Sadly on that occasion, the glorious evening light didn't hold for the passing of the test train.
However, despite a dreadful morning two days later (which saw a return visit to Houghton Hall Horse Trials cancelled), it began to clear in the early afternoon. I therefore decided to take a punt & see if I could grab a shot at this newly cleared spot. As it turned out, I was very lucky. The sun came out on the walk down & by pure chance, the lead EMU was a red one.
Wheeling Lake Erie “Ohio Bicentennial” GP35 #200 leads local 634 over the former B&O Viaduct, dubbed “Stanton Curve” from its fictional name in the movie “Unstoppable”. The train is heading to Benwood, WV which is just over the river. It’ll then make interchange with CSX, and head north back to Mingo Junction, OH.
BNSF 8069 leads a trio of EMDs (to include a former SOO SD60) west through Fargo, ND with the M-NTWGFD (Northtown, MN - Grand Forks, ND).
This was a good day trackside. I also caught the other 'M' train bound for Grand Forks, the M-DILGFD with a nice Bluebonnet leader:

The 'M' trains usually ran with nice power, but it wouldn't be too long into the future when the widecabs would dominate. I was short-timing it here as I only had about 3 months left in the northern plains before moving to Colorado for my next assignment. I think I left at about the right time when it came to the power situation...
43049 leads 1Z50 05:15 Bangor to Kingswear Midland Pullman charter past Goodrington Sands on Wednesday 13th April 2022. 43046 on the rear
47828 leads train 1Z30 returning from Whitby to Worcester near the summit of the line close to Kildale during the final rays of light on the 12th of November 2022. 47614 is the rear loco, to lead after the reversal at Battersby.
A trio of GEs leads a just shy of 200 cars long Q329 into Grand Rapids at Shaffer. The third unit and bottom 105 cars were an empty coal train destined for storage in Muskegon on the Michigan Shore RR.

UP 1989 leads the MNYPU out of Castle Rock, CO after a brief pause in town (McDonald's, perhaps?).
Regardless of the delay, it seemed like the train was trying to make up time as it used the entire limits of track speed between here and Larkspur.
Despite Colorado's stay at home order, the appearance of the DRGW Heritage Unit brought out the railfans. The Colorado State Patrol didn't seem to mind as they stopped and asked what everyone was doing. Satisfied with the responses they got (from yours truly included), they took on the role of enthused gawkers like the rest of us! Either that or they felt bad for us and our chosen hobby and didn't want to add insult to injury with a $500 ticket. Either way, the chase continued....
OK, he looks like Santa from yesteryear, before his abs turned into a bowl full of jelly.. Or, delivering all of those gifts on Christmas eve was a rejuvenating workout. . I'll let you, the viewer, be the judge.

CN 3057 leads a late Canada Day eastbound '306' as they cross a small trestle approaching Grand Falls, New Brunswick, along the CN Napadogan Subdivision.
July 1,2016.
In the early years of Conrail, one never knew what might show up. Here a very crazy lashup leads an eastbound freight through what's left of Erie Lackawanna's Literary Street Yard. Leading the way is a unit that's on home rails being an ex-EL C424, helped along by two ex-PC geeps, and ex-PC Alco, and a borrowed switcher from the Lake Terminal Railway. This yard has long been gone and has been serving as an aggregates facility for Shelly Materials, but the last link of the Towpath Trail will finally make it's way through here by the end of 2018 if things go as planned.
6358 leads the 214 east through Bolivar on 12/13/16. The snow from earlier in the day had frozen to the trees once the temperature dropped.
Hope everyone has had or is having a great holiday!
Rebuilt EMD F40PH-3C 1035 leads shuttle train 2067 from East Taunton into the legendary seafaring city of just over 100,000 people. They are crossing the JFK Memorial Highway and Achushnet Ave. at MP NM54.2 on the New Bedford mainline and passing the large former Wamsutta Mill complex which operated from 1847 until 1958. Once the largest cotton weaving factory in the world with four thousand looms and two thousand employees, today a portion of the complex survives as loft style apartments.
New Bedford is a fascinating and underrated town. It has a rich history dating back to its first colonial settlers in 1652. Whaling began in the city while we were still a colony and grew through the early 19th century transforming the port into a center of international trade and one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the United States. Amazingly whaling lasted until the last expedition arrived in 1925! Whale oil had long since been supplanted by petroleum products and by then New Bedford had been transformed into a major mill town. At its height, over 30,000 people were employed by the 32 cotton-manufacturing companies that owned the textile factories of New Bedford.
While the textile era would wane after the great depression it may surprise you to know that New Bedford is still a major center of the fishing industry. In fact the city is the top port in the nation in terms of value with $389 million worth landed in 2017! However Dutch Harbor, Alaska is tops in volume with 769 million pounds vs. 111 million pounds in NB. However more than 90% of Dutch's volume comes from pollock while more than 80% of NB's comes from sea scallops. And the seafood lovers amongst you here know a plate of sea scallops costs just a tad more than those frozen fish sticks we all loved as kids do!
With rails first reaching the city in 1840 New Bedford was once hugely important to the Old Colony Railroad and later the New Haven but the railroad's fortunes here waned with those mills. The last passenger train left in 1958 but regular scheduled service is scheduled to return within 5 years under the auspices of the MBTA. NH successors Penn Central and Conrail continued to serve the city though by the mid 1990s when I first explored the area Conrail came down this branch only twice a week and no further than Nash Rd and the wye to the Watuppa branch. Conrail's lines in Massachusetts passed to CSXT in 1999 and in 2010 CSXT sold the Fall River and New Bedford Secondary tracks (among other properties) to the state and then sold their perpetual freight rights on these two lines to the Mass Coastal Railroad. This sale was the first major step in the process to revive passenger service after nearly six decades which culminated in this historic reopening.
