4074 leads a Kyle westbound out of Phillipsburg Kansas with some great winter golden light.

Clinchfield 800 leads CSX Train P901 across the Russell Fork River leading the 75th Annual Santa Train towards Kingsport, TN on the CSX Kingsport Sub.

The special power this year is made up of a pair from Ed Bowers' Vintage Locomotives, Inc. fleet: VLIX 800 and VLIX 2024. #800 is an EMD F3A built new in December 1948, later rebuilt to F7A specifications in 1957, and served Family Lines, Seaboard, and CSX before going into private ownership, and later C&O Paint. The CSX Huntington, WV Locomotive Shop returned the engine to as-delivered appearance for the event.

Behind the F-Unit is an SCL 2024 dressed up for the event as the next in sequence EMD SD45 the Clinchfield would have acquired when they swapped 7 U36C's to the Seaboard Coast Line for a like number of SD45's in 1977, and left them in this interim, almost hybrid paint scheme.

NS 7593 leads CSX I132 east through Ansonia, crossing over to dodge the incoming M311 getting ready to work the yard. Usually the 132 has UP power, or maybe KCS if you're lucky enough, but of course Zane and I were unlucky enough for it to have NS the one day we shot Ansonia. At least the shot turned out decent...

EMD 9089 leads a baretable train south on the Hillsboro Sub in Alton, ND.

This was one of 5 trains I saw over a three day span that had an Oakway leading, and none of them were coal trains. Up to this point during my time in North Dakota, these standard cab beauties were common on northern plains coal trains. However, power distribution began to change as BNSF filled its roster with ES44ACs and SD70ACes. The new AC power pushed the older AC power, namely the SD70MACs, north to Glendive, MT, home of the Oakways, SD60Ms, and SD75s. With the influx of AC power, these DC stalwarts were being forced out of the coal power pool. Back when this shot was taken, there was speculation where they'd end up as we were seeing them on pretty much everything except coal trains!

The massive grain silos here at Alton were definitely an eye-catcher along the table-flat lands of eastern North Dakota, but, interestingly, the world's tallest structure was actually not far from this spot. At the time, the KVLY-TV Mast was just a little off to the west and stood at an impressive 2,063'!

BNSF 296 leads a loaded rail train north through Colorado Springs, CO.

I just happened to spot this guy out of the blue while I was passing by downtown, and, when one is presented with a H4 SD75, one must shoot it, so iPhone to the rescue! Even though the shiny newness of these units has started to fade, these things still look spectacular in H4 paint.

Looking back, the last time I shot a SD75I was almost nine and a half years ago, which, incidentally, was not too far from where I shot this guy:

As long as BNSF continues to send these suckers up and down the Joint Line, I will continue to shoot them...

Charlie on the Sentinel Trail at Wyalusing State Park.

We had some sleet and snow during our hike but it was wonderful and refreshing.

We arrived before 10am and had the park to ourselves.

We hiked 5.41 miles according to GPS and desended 843 feet and climbed 841 feet. A great slow workout for the two of us.

The sights were beautiful above and below the confluence of the Wisconsin River and the Mississippi River.

I still have a few trails to go before we knock off all them. Looks like a great winter project.

From the Ante-Chapter-House a curved passage leads to one of the most admirable areas of Spanish Renaissance architecture: the Chapter-House of the Cathedral. It was begun in 1558 under the direction of the architec Hernán Ruiz II and was finished by Asensio de Maeda in 1592.

The layout of this area is elliptical so that all the members of the cathedral chapter were perfectly visible at their meetings where the problems of the spiritual and material government of the church were brought up and discussed. The oval vaulting in one simple unit helps the voice to carry and has exceptional acoustics. The need for hearing and seeing required in the meetings of the numerous clergy was thus satisfactorily solved, but at the same time the wall decoration of the Chapter-House consists of a complex series of pictures and figures to emphasize the virtues expected of those who came to meet there so that their exchange of ideas and opinions would take place in an atmosphere of harmony and concerd. The walls therefore show a moral code for the canons to observe in their chapter meetings. The composition of pictures and figures designed by the canon Francisco Pacheco includes a seies of sculptures ans paintings with Latin inscriptions referring to the meanings of the images. All this decoration appears in the second section of the Hall, and the first to be seen between the pedestals of the columns are painted versions of the Virtues, among which Justice, Charity, Faith, Compassion and Hope can be identified. These virtues are female figures, some of which represent Saints at the same time, such as St Barbara, St Katherine, St Lucy and St Agnes. These paintings were carried out by Pablo de Céspedes in 1592.

The authors of the large vertical reliefs between the columns are Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo and Diego de Velasco who made them approximately between 1582 and 1582. They show The Assumption of the Virgin, Two Miracles of St John the Evangelists, The cleasing of the Temple, The Heavenly Father with the Vintagers, The seven Angels calling the Damned, The Ectasy of St John Evangelist and The Allegory of the Mystic Lamb. The rectangular reliefs were carried out by Marcos Cabrera around 1590 and show The last Sermon of Jesus Christ, Daniel in the Lions´Den, Christ´s Baptism, The Storm in the Sea of Tiberias, The Parable of the Sower, Christ,s Agony in the Garden, St Peter contemplating the unclean Animals and Christ washing the Feet of the Apostles.

In the vault there is a magnificent series of paintings by Murillo who was commissioned by the Chapter in 1667. In a splendid carved frame everything centres on La Inmaculada, which may be considered among the most beautiful the artist made of the subject. Painted on circular canvases around the vault there is a series of eight Seville Saints who can be identified by the name on the signs. They are San Hermenegildo, San Fernando, San Leandro, San Isidoro, San Laureano, Santa Justa, Santa Rufina and San Pio. The Chapter-House centres on a magnificent mahogany armchair which was carved by the sculptor Diego de Velasco in 1592. Before it there is the secretary´s bench, also of excellent design by the same artist.

This trail leads from the park entrance (the only land access to the Kenai Fjords National Park) along the meltwater river and up to the face of the glacier. There are signs along the trail marking where the face was at various times. This is taken from a point just past where it was in 1917. So where I'm standing and everything in this shot was under over 100 feet (33m) of ice only 100 years ago. Something to contemplate. We did not stand here too long though, as we were being attacked by kamikazi mosquitoes, which of course are the Alaska State Bird.

The train was heading down to Bournemouth to collect another class 458 unit for refurbishment and reforming at Alstom Widnes.

Sunshine in England during the autumn of 2023 was in short supply. A succession of rain bearing Atlantic fronts through October and early November gave way to cloudy dry weather around the 20th of November.

On this morning the cloud near the Dorset coast cleared for less than an hour. This location, being only 20 minutes from my home, was worth a punt for my first chance to capture a class 56 in Dorset.

90034 leads 92036 'Bertolt Brecht' past Milton Malsor on the 0A06 1332 Crewe T.M.D. (E) to DB Cargo Fan A And B Sdgs, in the final few minutes of daylight.

92036 is the first 92 to travel along any part of the WCML in 2023 as, due to New Years Day and the bank holiday, the Caledonian Sleeper has yet to run this year. Also of note is the new OHLE masts which have appeared over the last week, presumably in preparation for the rail connection to Northampton Gateway.

Just over a month later in February 2023, 90034 was placed into storage at Crewe IEMD.

This path leads towards Taw Marsh. Steeperton Tor can been seen ahead.

Taw's Song- John Aston. (Written sometime between: 1900-1918)

Where Steeperton among his peers

Uplifts his front to air,

By Cranmere's solitary bogs,

I take my rising there.

Tawmarsh is mine. I hear its voice,

Its every silent cry,

Its blasted desolation known

To me and to the sky.

The shy soft things with quiet wings

That haunt each close recess

Know my unknown and sacred lore

In all its perfectness.

The Tors at hand in circle stand

Eternal watch to keep:

Never an hour their eyelids close,

Never they fall asleep.

Their roundy-poundies puzzle you.

I know there secrets each;

Kistvaen and menhir call to me

In enigmatic speech.

I have the secret of the world

You'd give your soul to know,

But all my rills derision laugh,

And so to sea I go.

ARR 4319 leads the daily Coastal Classic along the shores of the Turnagain Arm north near Potter, AK.

This is our 23rd entry in the Alaska Revisited series, and it shows how well ARR's yellow and blue is the perfect scheme for The Last Frontier. The Coastal Classic was my favorite passenger train mostly because of its matching scheme...

For Polaroid Week, Fall 2010.

Don't miss this morning's dose of Polabob! :-)

All my submissions for this week.

Is this the man who leads our country? Boris, Biden, Trump, Macron, Putin, Xi ? Which is the wooden top we put our trust and faith in?

Which one knows the truth about the origins of Covid, or the Christmas party? Which one launched a biological attack on the freedoms of the people, which one will stop World War Three from happening by not attacking Ukraine or Taiwan? Which one will ensure world Peace?

As my son would say, we are at the stage now, like in 1930's Germany, when after WW2 people say, why didn't we stop them when all the terrible things first started? And they started stripping us of our freedoms?

My picture today, a carved 'signpost' at the divide in the road at Satran, Skye.. A Worzel Gummidge scarecrow, crucified on a wooden cross. Hmmmm. Symbolic? There was a man who gave his life, crucified on a cross for his beliefs. As Christmas nears (not 'Holidays'), perhaps we need to pause a moment just to remember what this whole thing is about. Shouldn't life be about being humane and showing goodwill to all others?

Do something good and give yourself the best Christmas ever! Which leader have you got faith in? Any of those above, for Christ's sake? Try the man who died on a wooden cross.,

ST70AH #8900 leads an SD40-2 and an SD40-3 past the searchlights at Haddix Road with L303 bound for Detroit. With new Safetrans signals piling up at different spots along the Plymouth Sub, these relics don't have much time left.
