For Polaroid Week, Fall 2010.

Don't miss this morning's dose of Polabob! :-)

All my submissions for this week.

Is this the man who leads our country? Boris, Biden, Trump, Macron, Putin, Xi ? Which is the wooden top we put our trust and faith in?

Which one knows the truth about the origins of Covid, or the Christmas party? Which one launched a biological attack on the freedoms of the people, which one will stop World War Three from happening by not attacking Ukraine or Taiwan? Which one will ensure world Peace?

As my son would say, we are at the stage now, like in 1930's Germany, when after WW2 people say, why didn't we stop them when all the terrible things first started? And they started stripping us of our freedoms?

My picture today, a carved 'signpost' at the divide in the road at Satran, Skye.. A Worzel Gummidge scarecrow, crucified on a wooden cross. Hmmmm. Symbolic? There was a man who gave his life, crucified on a cross for his beliefs. As Christmas nears (not 'Holidays'), perhaps we need to pause a moment just to remember what this whole thing is about. Shouldn't life be about being humane and showing goodwill to all others?

Do something good and give yourself the best Christmas ever! Which leader have you got faith in? Any of those above, for Christ's sake? Try the man who died on a wooden cross.,

Amtrak must be short of motive power since BNSF locomotives have appeared on the Cascades frequently recently.

An SD60 leads extra Lethbridge traffic south across Range Rd 273 as the train approaches Blackie. With ongoing issues with their unit, the crew will end up setting off the rear portion of their train in Blackie before limping on towards to Lethbridge.

UP has done something good for once something I thought I would never see UP allowed BNSF run without UP leaders or ATC BNSF 7885 leads the way through Watkins

56105 leads 3S14 11.38 Grimsby Town - York Works railhead treatment train, approaching New Barnetby. 66848 is on the rear. [Pole, 5/6 sections {~6.8m)]

This leg of the day's circuit first heads to Halifax (via Skellow, Wakefield Kirkgate and Mirfield), then returns to Wakefield Kirkgate (reverse) to run to Sheffield via Barnsley, and finally returns to York via Barnsley, Wakefield Kirkgate and Castleford. Incidentally, this train set off from Grimsby still showing as 3S13 on signalling maps, and therefore some reports for 3S13 on Realtime Trains have incorrect times; they are actually the times 3S14 went past, and 3S14 has lots of "no report" entries!

56105 was standing in for 66847 which had been sent for tyre turning; this was its third day working with 66848 and these wagons, but the loco is noticeably dirtier (on this side, at least) than when I'd photographed it closer to the background bridge two days previously (see here).

I'd originally planned to come to this spot on that previous occasion, but had spotted a group closer to the lime works and thought the sun might not have been lighting the front of the loco quite as well here - but I was wrong. So I decided to have another go, this location allowing a higher vantage point because you are not stood quite as much below track level. It was either come here or go to Scunthorpe, but I wanted to go north of the Humber for 3J51 (with 37s) and going to Scunthorpe would have risked missing it before its reversal at Hull (because I would have set off about twenty minutes later and had a longer drive).

Edmund Hannay leads it's train past the Hastings sea front Funfair behind on the Hastings Miniature Railway. The third of three live steam engines working on the railway over the weekend of 27th/28th November.

37423 leads the 1Z41 Rose Hill Marple to Crewe ( via Hadfield) along the normally EMU only Glossop branch on July 4 2021. The tour had already reversed at Glossop and was now heading for Hadfield. Despite the rain, the bridge here was packed with photographers and local residents to see the rare sight of a loco-hauled passenger train on the line.

CSXT M210 passing through downtown Troy home of the Troy University Trojans. An SD70MAC leads the consist.

67027 leads a Network Rail test train through the picturesque station at Bath Spa. 67023 was bringing up the rear. I came very close to being bowled by a pigeon who saw me crouching down and thought there was food on offer!

As the sun sets over Dartmoor ex-LNER HST power car #43290 leads Network Rail's "New Measurement Train" past Flow Point as it runs along the north shore of the River Teign estuary heading for Taunton from Paignton via Bristol East Yard on Friday the 14th of January 2022.

SD40-3 #4010 leads Y106 under the signal cantilever at Pleasant St on their way east to work various industries. Some of the skyline of downtown Grand Rapids can be seen behind the US 131 bridge. Long ago, the PRR and NYC crossed the Pere Marquette at grade (roughly where the overpass is) here, and the PM also diverged to the right, all 3 lines converging at Union Station. After the station was closed and demolished in the 1960s, the tracks through downtown were gradually torn up, the Conrail main finally coming out in 1983. The track at the far right is the lead to the Amtrak station that was constructed in 2014, partially following the old ROW to GRUS.

An SD70ACe-T4 leads UP train MDMNL-21 down Main Track 2 of the UP KC Metro Sub at 12th St heading to Leeds for a crew change.

To the left is the former site of Ford Assembly Plant at 10th and Winchester, which began construction in 1909 and finished two years later in 1911. This was the first Ford plant built outside of Detroit.

Ford later opened up a new plant within the Kansas City area at Claycomo, MO, which opened its doors in 1951 for military production. Eventually, consumer vehicles were then produced at the newer Claycomo plant beginning in January of 1957, and by the end of December of 1956, production ceased at the original Winchester plant.

The twin smokestacks with "Ford" in-laid on the bricks still remain standing here, serving as a reminder of a bit of Kansas City history. 12/21/24.

Caledonian Sleeper liveried 87002 'Royal Sovereign' leads the Caledonian Sleeper 'Lowlander' ECS 5E35 0750 London Kings Cross to Wembley Inter City Depot past Harringay. Hired in Freightliner 90046 was at the rear of the short formed 12 coach train.

Caledonian Sleepers where diverted due to engineering work outside London Euston, resulting in the sleepers terminating at Kings Cross. The process required the 'Highlander', normally comprising of 16 coaches when running along its normal WCML route, to be split up into two 7 coach trains because of short platforms at London Kings Cross.

Buffered 43080 leads on what is believed to be 1S71, the 07:21 Penzance to Glasgow on 24th September 2001. The location is an old quarry at Winterbourne, a mile out of Bristol Parkway which was a popular spot at the time. Unfortunately the line has now been wired and trees have taken over.

43080 started life in Feb 1978 as E43080, part of East Coast set 254013. It eventually became one of 8 to be fitted with buffers and DVT equipment to work with Class 91's and Mk3 HST coaches whilst the DVT and Mk 4's were built. Next was Cross Country for Virgin trains and then after a period in store the Crewe built power car was re-engined and renumbered to 43480 working for Grand Central. After their HST's were replaced with Adelante's it then had a short spell with East Midlands Trains before moving over to Rail Adventure for use in stock moves.

A stained glass entryway leads to the chapel, the centerpiece of which is a solid marble altar placed in the center of a circular marble platform. A metal sculpture by Harry Bertoia reflects light from the only window in the chapel, a beautiful domed skylight. The sculpture appears as a cascading waterfall of light that is constantly adjusting, moving, and redefining the interior of the chapel. The Chapel also features a 1300 pound bell cast at MIT in the Metals Processing Laboratory and a 768-pipe organ designed by Walter Holtkamp.

Once inside, the visitor is transported to a completely unexpected interior space that is unknown from the exterior façade. The interior is inundated with a high level of detail and atmospheric qualities that are enhanced by filtered natural light.

6413 leads a westerly early morning departure from Whitefish. The working had arrived the previous night and had deposited one locomotive from the consist.

E43112 leads W43006 on the approaches to Fitzwilliam with "The West Riding Limited - HST Farewell Tour" - 1Z43 11:01 Leeds to London Kings Cross. 21/12/2019. Not the best of spots but I couldn't think of anywhere else that would enable me to get to the steam afterwards. As it was, my intended position on Fitz station was crap, so thanks to www.flickr.com/photos/driff_tiger/ for helping me find this location. Good job I took me steps!

66 519 leads the Chiltern Metals RHTT towards Northwood Hills having not long passed through Pinner. The London Underground Metropolitan Line shares its tracks with Chiltern Railways on this stretch as far as Amersham. Also, this route is heavily tree lined, hence the need for trains such as these!

CN 8884 leads the daily '406' freight, as it rounds an S-Curve, approaching the crossing at Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick, about 13 miles outside it's final destination of Saint John, New Brunswick. This will probably the last time that I bother shooting this train until the leader changes, or until 2237, the other unit, leads.

CSXT 7703 leads a mixed freight through downtown Augusta, Ga, past a warehouse that's mostly been reduced to rubble. Taken at the intersection of 12th street and Walton Way back in 2016.

GP35m 3600 leads NX10 west through Newtown, Ct., after working Blue Linx, formerly Georgia-Pacific lumber in Botsford. A lot has changed since this image was taken, Blue Linx closed after the roof of their building collapsed after a heavy snow, with consolidating locations. The Maybrook has been OOS service east of Hawleyville for a yaer or so while Northeast Utilities contractors replace the transmission towers that have lined the ROW since the sixties. And in August during a historic ten-inch rainfall a devastating washout severed the route in Botsford. The moral of this story? Take pictures of everything because you never know when it will change.

BNSF 6758 leads a grain train south (railroad east) along the Mississippi River on a nice April morning a few years back. This is the northerly view from the overlook at Mississippi Palisades State Park just a little north of Savanna, IL - a nice place to spent a few hours in the sunshine on a cool spring morning.

FURX 8116 leads a long stack train up out of the Red River Valley of the North through the sweeping S-curve in Lake Park, MN.

This S-curve was a favorite to catch morning action as eastbounds made their way out of Dilworth along the famed Staples Sub. This particular morning was quite the gem as MN Chris (aka railtalk) and I were treated to not only this train but also these as well:

Ah, the mid-2000s...what a treat when it came to standard cab goodness! It was for action like this that I would venture the hour-plus drive from Grand Forks, ND...rarely was disappointed after a day along the Staples Sub!

3265 leads a train to Hornsby for the start of the Hornsby - Gordon shuttles over the course of the day. Five shuttles would be operated up and down the north shore line, consisting of 3265 and GL110 on the rear.

To much dismay this train appeared on the closer, suburban track as opposed to the freight track on the right, due to it already beeing occupied further up the track.

CSX 6071 leads the daily Cincinnati - Winchester road local, better known as C701, through the former L&N searchlights at North Cabin near Winchester, KY. The crew are just minutes from their destination of Patio Yard, where they will spot some cars before heading to the hotel.

CSX 4555 leads intermodal train I044 past Ocala in the summer season rain of Florida.

This trains consist would contain an inspection car sandwiched between the power that was brought down from the previous day's I045. If I had to guess, this would probably be for a track inspection or speed test maybe? I’m not too knowledgeable on that stuff.

The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists connects the new "Europacity" with the east bank of the Berlin-Spandau Shipping Canal and leads to Kieler Straße, on the corner of which an original border watchtower reminds us that the canal formed the border between West and East from 1961 to 1990.

The Europacity area of around 85,000 m² is located in the Mitte district. In the 2010s, the 40-hectare section north of Invalidenstrasse was still largely characterised by its former use as a container station and by small-scale logistics companies. A mixed neighbourhood with residential, office, retail and art uses is currently being developed on the site. Housing for around 2,000 people and offices for over 10,000 workplaces are planned. Most of this has already been completed. On its southern border, Invalidenstrasse, some uses have become firmly established. For example, the Museum für Gegenwart in the Hamburger Bahnhof and the neighbouring Rieckhalle have created a cultural location. The site was conceived as an ‘art campus’ and expanded in 2008 to include the Halle am Wasser as a location for six art galleries, an art education agency and an exhibition office. In 2009, the art campus was completed with new entrances, pathways and the design of the central square. The area south of Invalidenstrasse is now also seen as part of Europacity. To the east of the main railway station, residential buildings have been constructed on the banks of the Humboldthafen (which is no longer used as a harbour). To the west of the station, a chessboard-like square with office and hotel buildings, most of which have already been completed, has been under construction for several years.

This passageway leads up to Kalmar Castle. I actually did photograph it almost 4 years earlier. Do check it out, and notice how much I have improved over time.

UP 8074 leads a long MPUNY (Pueblo, CO - North Yard (Denver), CO) manifest into Castle Rock, CO. This train was running 4x1.

Even though it's the Joint Line, BNSF trains heavily outnumber their Armour Yellow counterparts, but it was a Union Pacific morning on this particular day. The MPUNY met its counterpart, the MNYPU, a bit earlier on the siding at Monument, and, directly off to my right on Main 1, a UP CSUX coal train bound for Colorado Springs was working its way south.

43068 leads this Virgin Cross Country HST set past Teignmouth. 4th September 2001. Rich Turd Branson eventually replaced these trains with his awful voyagers. However, when the fantastic news broke that he lost his franchise in 2007 Cross Country trains reintroduced a few sets to work Cross country services to and from Plymouth and Penzance.

DBCargo 67005 ‘Queen’s Messenger’ leads 67006 ‘Royal Sovereign’ in their royal livery out of Ely through the fens passing Ely West Junction, Second Drove Footpath while working 16:33 1Z47 Downham Market To London Kings Cross. 02/06/2022.

This was a very enjoyable afternoon out in Ely from about 1 till 6 with 37401 and this your coming through, there was plenty to see. I sadly missed 56091 which came through light engine earlier this same day but this didn’t bother me as I knew 37401 was coming through later along with this to make up for missing it. I for some reason never posted this shot on Flickr and I’m not sure why as I really enjoyed this day, I must’ve walked many miles back and forwards between spots! Luckily here, the sun just shined through the clouds, gently but enough to light up the shot and good enough for me.
