RCPE 3431 leads three other SD40-2s west into Garvin, MN on RCPE's thrice weekly Mankato to Aurora train. The four Dash 2s are working the 95 car westbound up to track speed after leaving CP trackage a few miles back.
This RCPE crew would go on duty at Mankato in the morning and 5 1/2 hours later would depart west. After a three hour run to Tracy the crew was starting to run out of time, so they highballed a pick up and continued west to Elkton, SD to tie up. Always nice when this train runs through Tracy, but the days are getting much shorter as we approach fall. Still got a few shots west of Tracy on the evening of August 22, 2017. Can't complain about the shorter days though as that was the reason I was out there as part of my annual trip to get away from the Twin Ports one more time before summer ends.
Canadian National C40-8M #2410 leads Norfolk Southern train #291 out of Atlanta bound for Jacksonville on Independence Day 2014.
An RS3 leads a trio of Alcos on Chicago & North Western train 495 just east of Judson, Minn. on the evening of Sept. 4, 1976.
Union Pacific AC4460CW No. 7312 leads a North Platte (Nebraska) bound manifest over the summit at Cajon. The train has a KCS AC44CW as second loco in the consist (No. 4586), and is crossing from Main 2 to Main 3, having joined the BNSF from the UP Palmdale cut-off at Silverwood. 02 March 2023.

66424 'Driver Paul Scrivens' leads 3S01 Rail Head Treatment Train back to Stowmarket Down Goods Loop on the 10th October 2022. The DRS 66's are captured in the golden glow of Autumnal sunshine near Lancaster's Crossing, between Haughley Junction and Stowmarket.
1B26 Inverness to Edinburgh Waverley. Class 158 Express leads with Class 170 Turbostar on the rear both in Scotrail Saltire livery seen here between Moy and Tomatin on the HML heading south.
Leads a fragile life in high country river systems tolerating only pristine water.
Confiding and very vulnerable to predation.
One of only two true torrent ducks in the world.
Freshly outshopped from Juniata with rebuilt trucks, NS 9883 leads U52 over the crest of Raitt Mountain at Virginia Lee on a humid summer morning. The turned signal heads here are for the removed siding between Virginia Lee and Raitt.

BNSF 8580 leads a southbound coal train toward the N. Meadows Parkway bridge in Castle Rock, CO.
This shot was taken through the chainlink fence along the bridge and would be the first of two through-the-fence shots on this particular day.
The snow is the remnants of a dumping two weeks prior, which is really saying something for a Colorado snowfall on the east side of the mountains as it's usually here then gone before you know it.
The N. Meadows Parkway bridge I'm standing on is new (and I thank the designers for including sidewalks!) so it's no surprise that other new stuff is coming. To the right of the train, that land is being readied for a housing development called, unimaginatively, The Meadows. Ah, progress...
ES44C4 leads what must be empties since there's no DPU, just the single motor, over the Whitewater River
A lovely M62UMM-008 leads an additional express train toward Darkhan City, framed by the golden hues of early autumn on the northern route of the Trans-Mongolian Railway.

MNA 4081 leads the Mankato to Aurora train after some serious snowfall struck the area. It's a little weird shooting something not in G&W paint on this train, but I'll take it over the patched UP units.
Having failed at getting a decent shot the other night, I attempted another shot at Paddington of the NMT, but again the Yellow one leads as 43062 eases into Paddington with the monthly 1Q19 Taunton-London Paddington "New Measurement train" test train, recently purchased 43299 was on the rear
UP 4014 leads the steam special westbound on the Limon Sub, at Cedar Point, CO (just west of Limon, CO). Nov 25, 2019.
A trail leads up past a Sequoiadendron giganteum, commonly referred to as the giant sequoia, giant redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood). This particular tree grows in a small grove on Deer Creek in Great Sequoia National Monument which is part of Sequoia National Forest. Locals tell me that at one time there were more big trees on Deer Creek but most were logged. A small grove remains. I visited 2 trees there. i was told that there was a saw mill active on Deer Creek in the late1800s. Today a small picnic area can be found near the sequoias at the end of Deer Creek Mill road.
The giant sequoia survives as the sole living species in the genus Sequoiadendron, and one of three species of coniferous trees known as redwoods, classified in the family Cupressaceae in the subfamily Sequoioideae, together with Sequoia sempervirens (coast redwood) and Metasequoia glyptostroboides (dawn redwood). Giant sequoia specimens are the most massive trees on Earth. The common use of the name sequoia usually refers to Sequoiadendron giganteum, which occurs naturally only in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The oldest known giant sequoia is 3,200–3,266 years old. The ones at Deer Creek are not as large as some and are probably a little younger.
An SD60F leads 184 eastbound through East End Green Creek. The original Wheeling searchlights have since been replaced and 184 rarely runs with CN power anymore.
73965 leads at Test train towards Woodend Jn where it will reverse and head for the High Marnham branch
Western Maryland 1309 leads the Frostburg Flyer on their impressive run through famous Helmstetter's Curve on a gorgeous day out in the mountains. I was actually very grateful for the heavy morning cloud cover, which blocked the sun and allowed me to grab this shot of them. As we get into the long hot days here, sometimes it's actually better if the sun isn't out, and that was certainly the case here. Standing at this iconic spot listening to the steam whistle echo off the mountains gave me chills, and it will not be my last trip out to Cumberland. I did my best to hide the terrible F40 behind the trees, but some things simply can't be helped (and hopefully will eventually be repainted).
Running long hood forward as management intended for it to do, a U-30B leads a westbound pool train off the D&H through Cleveland. The ex-Lehigh Valley GP38-2's were a common sight on these trains from the D&H.
A rare un-rebuilt SD70MAC leads southbound doublestack train Q203 into the hole at North Cairo amidst freshly fallen powder. Still is extremely weird to call these once ubiquitous wide-nosed EMDs "rare", but considering this is the first one I have photographed in three years with most on the CSX roster either stored or rebuilt, it is what it is...
Follow the path that leads the way
To the light that fills the day
Past the tree and fields of green
Until on water, there is seen
A brightness that fills up your day
When you follow the path that leads the way
CP 8834 leads Chicago bound marine stack train #148 east across the swing bridge over the mouth of the Shuswap River at Sicamous, BC.
During the summer months, this bridge is constantly opening and closing for tourists navigating some of the over 200 rental houseboats that call the lake home in and out of the marina. The towns along Shuswap Lake swell in seasonal population as visitors mostly from the urban centers of British Columbia, and Alberta flock to the region for its warm temperatures, beaches, and watersports.
Until 2014, Sicamous was the junction with CP's Okanagan Subdivision branch line, which diverged south from the main just past the left edge of the image. CP leased the line to shortline operator Omnitrax in 1998. After the largest shipper on the line closed in 2008, the shortline folded. The right of way was sold to the regional district in 2014 for a rails to trails project.
From the Ante-Chapter-House a curved passage leads to one of the most admirable areas of Spanish Renaissance architecture: the Chapter-House of the Cathedral. It was begun in 1558 under the direction of the architec Hernán Ruiz II and was finished by Asensio de Maeda in 1592.
The layout of this area is elliptical so that all the members of the cathedral chapter were perfectly visible at their meetings where the problems of the spiritual and material government of the church were brought up and discussed. The oval vaulting in one simple unit helps the voice to carry and has exceptional acoustics. The need for hearing and seeing required in the meetings of the numerous clergy was thus satisfactorily solved, but at the same time the wall decoration of the Chapter-House consists of a complex series of pictures and figures to emphasize the virtues expected of those who came to meet there so that their exchange of ideas and opinions would take place in an atmosphere of harmony and concerd. The walls therefore show a moral code for the canons to observe in their chapter meetings. The composition of pictures and figures designed by the canon Francisco Pacheco includes a seies of sculptures ans paintings with Latin inscriptions referring to the meanings of the images. All this decoration appears in the second section of the Hall, and the first to be seen between the pedestals of the columns are painted versions of the Virtues, among which Justice, Charity, Faith, Compassion and Hope can be identified. These virtues are female figures, some of which represent Saints at the same time, such as St Barbara, St Katherine, St Lucy and St Agnes. These paintings were carried out by Pablo de Céspedes in 1592.
The authors of the large vertical reliefs between the columns are Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo and Diego de Velasco who made them approximately between 1582 and 1582. They show The Assumption of the Virgin, Two Miracles of St John the Evangelists, The cleasing of the Temple, The Heavenly Father with the Vintagers, The seven Angels calling the Damned, The Ectasy of St John Evangelist and The Allegory of the Mystic Lamb. The rectangular reliefs were carried out by Marcos Cabrera around 1590 and show The last Sermon of Jesus Christ, Daniel in the Lions´Den, Christ´s Baptism, The Storm in the Sea of Tiberias, The Parable of the Sower, Christ,s Agony in the Garden, St Peter contemplating the unclean Animals and Christ washing the Feet of the Apostles.
In the vault there is a magnificent series of paintings by Murillo who was commissioned by the Chapter in 1667. In a splendid carved frame everything centres on La Inmaculada, which may be considered among the most beautiful the artist made of the subject. Painted on circular canvases around the vault there is a series of eight Seville Saints who can be identified by the name on the signs. They are San Hermenegildo, San Fernando, San Leandro, San Isidoro, San Laureano, Santa Justa, Santa Rufina and San Pio. The Chapter-House centres on a magnificent mahogany armchair which was carved by the sculptor Diego de Velasco in 1592. Before it there is the secretary´s bench, also of excellent design by the same artist.

CSXT 7564 leads manifest CSX M653 eastbound through Tuckahoe, West Virginia, as the train continues its uphill climb along the CSX Alleghany Subdivision.
BN 2200 leads 725 and 1768 on train 182 at Lyle with 87 cars. The train has paused in Lyle to set out 1768 and a handful of cars for the branch line to Goldendale. I lost the sun for a few hours right after this photo as this was my only shot of this cool eastbound with a GP30, F7B on the point. June 17, 1979. A rescan.
CBNS GP9 1705 leads a pair of SD40-2s on train 305 coming into Truro last fall. From time to time, the GP9 ends up on the road jobs as the four axle is one of the better pullers on the property. Aside from the centrebeams and chips on the head end from the Irving Sproule Lumber Mill, the rest of the train has a grand total of five cars from Tupper. This day was a mixed bag of weather with a little of everything, including some of the season's first flurries, and sadly very little sun.
DMIR 208 leads two other SD38-types and a SD-M with a train out of Missabe's Proctor Yard with an Evtac train with regular ore cars yarding in the receiving yard at left. The date of Oct. 31, 2002 puts this is before the CN takeover and all the freight cars, so catching two moving trains was not super common.
The four non-turbos must have sounded great notching up heading north with the Minntac stone, but don't really remember the sounds of this Halloween 13 years ago on the DM&IR. I do seem to recall being in position at Proctor for this afternoon limestone because a power outage cancelled school and the Halloween party at work.
The SD38AC #208 still looks good at this time, but must have been a tired locomotive as it was taken out of service the next year and wasn't on the property when CN took over in 2004. It still may survive at LTE in Ohio as it has been stored there for over a decade.
An Alton & Southern painted SD62 rebuild leads an SD70M on UP train MBNAS-26, scooting right along on the UP Springfield Sub. They were held at Elkhart for a northbound intermodal, and they're doing their best to make it into the line's namesake town and state capitol ahead of Amtrak Train No. 21, the southbound "Texas Eagle". Once at Springfield, they'll drop some cars for G&W's Illinois & Midland Railroad.
This train originated at Bloomington, IL and is destined for the A&S Gateway Yard at East St. Louis, IL. This train operates three times a week on alternating days with its northbound counterpart. SD60's based at Gateway are commonly used on the Bloomington train, two of which are painted in the Alton & Southern blue and yellow paint scheme with the "buzzsaw and bar" logo, which pays homage to the time when this St Louis terminal road was jointly owned by the MOP and CNW.
"The Alton Route" is familiar name around here, though its origins don't come from the St. Louis based railroad represent by the lead unit. This stretch of railroad is the former Chicago & Alton, commonly referred to as "The Alton", and eventually came under the control of the B&O. They left a heavy influence on the line in the form of CPL signals that were installed when CTC was put in place. The last of these B&O CPL's made it all the way into 2018 before finally being replaced.
As the years went on, the line passed through several different owners. The GM&O acquired it, and, of course, it eventually became the ICG after the merger with the Illinois Central. The line was divested and then operated as the Chicago, Missouri & Western Railway, which only lasted a couple of years before going bankrupt in 1990.
The line was split in two following CMNW's bankruptcy. The western half through St Louis and into Kansas City became the Gateway Western until being absorbed by KCS and more recently now a part of the CPKC. The Chicago to St Louis line through Springfield was purchased by the Southern Pacific and operated by them as the Southern Pacific Chicago - St. Louis, spelled as SPCSL and pronounced "Spizzle". Ultimately, UP merged with the SP, still the current owner of the line. 4/26/25.
Ex-Dinorwic Quarry Hunslet 'Cloister' leads a train around the balloon loop at Statfold Barn Railway.
Cloister was built in 1891 and later named after the winner of the 1893 Grand National. It worked on the levels half way up Dinorwic, remaining in service there until 1962 when it was preserved.
The loco recently moved to Statfold after the the dissolution of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust.
37424 leads 37407 past the gallery of photographers at Thurston on 09/10/21 on 3S60 08:37 Stowmarket to Stowmarket.
This shot has been on the 'to do' list for the last 3 years, good weather had never tied in with being free. Looking at the forecast for today and having a crap diagram at work meant I put in for lieu leave yesterday morning last minute and luckily got today off and the weather played ball!
CSXT GP40-2 #6280 leads a GP30 and GP35 at Paw Paw WV in early 1989. This location is on the western end of the B&O's Magnolia Cutoff.
The 6280 and I have some history...I ran it many times, mostly on locals. Once I got called to take an FRA car up the RF&P, and the good folks riding back there were looking to make their connections to Amtrak at Washington DC. I told them it wouldn't be a problem. I did my due-diligence when toning up the dispatcher to let her know we weren't a "work train" as she initially thought, but rather an "Occupied FRA special with distinguished guests" aboard. The clears came shortly thereafter.
Now, this was before PTC and let's just say the over speed feature didn't exactly work as intended on ole 6280. So with timetable in hand for the passenger speeds, I took the 6280 and the FRA car up the road as fast as I could get away with without being de-cert. Usually a maintained 5mph over. The FRA people made their connections, and our deadhead back to Richmond took longer than the train trip up!

Norfolk Southern AC44C6M 4700 leads a unit train of brand-new Oshkosh Defense Light Tactical Vehicles through the curves at Waterworks in Davenport, IA.

CN 2341 leads an eastbound stack train at Williams, Minnesota where the west side of the siding retains its searchlight signals and a dwarf searchlight. I am always pleased when I see these surviving, so this train was an opportunity to grab the head end and signals in the same frame.
519 leads the westbound Borealis through Dakota. A first for me, as I had never shot an Amtrak dash 8 before. Unsurprisingly, people were already camped out at this spot well in advance for 2816's return trip.
CSXT 7304 leads northbound manifest M818 northbound over the Diamond in Doswell, Virginia, as the BB local waits its turn.
The track leads to St. Begas' Church, to the right behind the large tree. Very close to the spot that inspired Alfred Tennyson with his poem Morte d' Arthur.
Arthur, dying, bids Sir Bedivere cast Excalibur into the mere which he reluctantly does on his third attempt.
So flashed and fell the brand Excalibur
But ere he dipt the surface, rose an arm
Clothed in white samite, mystic, wonderful.
And caught him by the hilt, ...
CSX 1 leads the Santa Train by the endangered signals at NE Miller Yard. Rumors indicate replacement signal work will begin in December 2025.
Amtrak Dash 8 510 leads the northbound Coast Starlight out of Portland, an hour and 37 minutes late. The presence of the P42 in the pepsi can scheme is somewhat ironic, a scheme (once) unique to the Dash 8 trailing behind a Dash 8 in regular colors. Irony aside, I was happy to get a better shot of a Dash 8 leading, not to mention happy to get out of the house after spending 3 weeks sick with mononucleosis. This was one of the first things I did after getting over the illness, and just walking around outside and climbing up ballast had me huffing and puffing, funny how 3 weeks of being bed ridden will do that to you. Considering Amtrak's ongoing equipment problems and the unreliability of the new Siemens equipment, I really don't think this is the last time we'll see this.
