A remote control for Sonos? Say it’s not so! Well iPort now has the iPort xPRESS and it is almost exactly what I had hoped for.
It came in a well-designed little box, with everything you need to get up and running, except for a USB wall charging adaptor. But, no big deal, as those are quite common in modern homes. The first thing it needs after unboxing is to charge for around three hours before you can get started. It can be used handheld, stuck to a fridge with a magnet, or mounted on a wall with or without a wall plate; all for $99.

Setup
Setup was quite easy, it reminded me of setting up a Sonos system with how straightforward the app was. You simply download the app, follow the simple directions with videos, and you will be up and running in minutes. After it’s connected you need to pair it with a single zone or group zone. This can only be changed from the app, not from the remote itself. You can also pick a favorite source. For example, if this remote is going in your bathroom you can assign your bathroom Pandora playlist to the favorite button, so it plays upon pressing it.
Functions
I really like how this unit is designed, it’s very easy to use with clear functions for each of the buttons. The app is also easy to use with only three tabs, making any adjustments very easy. The remote instantly reminded me of the Lutron Pico remote, another small and simple to use controller. The iPort has pause/play, skip, favorite, and volume buttons. None of the buttons will confuse anyone or cause you to run to find the manual, a great plus. There is a small LED window on the front that indicates things like battery level, Wi-Fi status and so on. I feel the design is excellent and it works as it should.
Where to use
The first place I thought to put is was the bathroom as I don’t want to bring my phone in there. Now, I can just hit a button and play music and adjust volume while taking a bath or shower. The kitchen would also be great for this remote, as I often play the same source from there. I only need play/pause and volume, and I don’t want to mess with a phone or tablet. Another good use is for commercial settings where you don’t need to change the source often, but you are constantly needing to adjust volume and play/pause. Although a cheap tablet with the Sonos controller app will do everything with Sonos, this remote presents a more sleek, fast, and simple option.

Battery life could be an issue for some, I was able to charge mine up and it kept going for weeks with no problem. However, it will need to be charged two or three times a year, so if you have a few of these remotes installed be aware of this. Also, it seems to disconnect from the network often, and I got this message a few times. These issues make it impractical to mount inside a decora plate. I suspect this will be fixed with a firmware update in the future. However, the unit does work while plugged in, so you could leave it plugged in all the time to fix the charging twice a year inconvenience.
Another thing to note; if you’re looking to replace smartphone control of Sonos, you could pick up an Amazon Alexa Echo Dot to use voice control for less than half the price of this remote. However, the remote doesn’t need a power source and can be wall mounted much more cleanly than Alexa. A third option is to pick up a cheap tablet, again pros and cons with this just like voice control. I feel they all have their strengths, but each is useful in its own right.
Conclusion
The iPort xPRESS Audio Keypad is a very well-designed remote with enough functions to get any room in the house working with Sonos. I wish the starting price were a bit lower to better compete with a cheap tablet or Alexa Echo Dot, but this remote presents a much sleeker solution to Sonos that I haven’t seen before. It will likely see a lot of use in bathrooms and kitchens as well as office and commercial settings. Would I install one in my home? Yes, I would!

GQ628R01 is designed to offer a rapid development board for end-users who do not want to spend extra resources on designing new board for every new project that may include GSM, GPS or any other data feeder. GQ628R01 is a multi-function design that incorporates GSM & GPS engines on same board. It includes telephone style keypad and supports wide variety of alpha-numeric LCD. There are six general purpose LEDs indicators, a beeper with external drive facility is also implemented. To support external drive capability, it includes four relays. A basic DC power supply is included with four different outputs, +12, +5, +4 and +3.3 volts. There are jumpers to select appropriate power for different components. GQ628R01 supports voice communication over GSM band. The board comes with example source code to test and verify each segment of GQ628R01.
This is about 7 iterations into laying out the keys. I wanted it to make some kind of visual, and ergonomically logical sense. I considered putting the stop/power buttons at the top, but I want them near the E-STOP, because I must toggle machine power on when I first start things up, and then toggle E-STOP off. It makes more sense not to reach all over for those, and of course, E-STOP needs to be the most accessible, as it's the panic button, so it's centered at the bottom, where it's closest to me, and easiest to hit. I have since changed my mind about Stop Program, and Machine Power, however, and swapped them. It makes more sense to power up, and E-STOP off in left-to-right order, and then the more common program stop is the closest key to me while operating the mill. I use that often instead of E-STOP to kill a program if I notice it running afoul of my preconceived notions.
The 4 axes of my mill (A being rotary for the rotary table I sometimes mount on the mill) are the center row, and the most important things (to me) that affect jogging those axes are the row right above them. Jogging itself, and homing to where I've jogged are on the row just below them, and as I'll be reaching left with my left hand, I've put -/+ under my index, and middle fingers. Clearing the plot is often useful, so it's just a bit farther, in my pinky area on that row. I switch between manual and MDI modes constantly, so they're right up at the top left, in their usual (keyboard) order. Finally, reloading, and running a program are often enough needs that they boxed the rest of the hotkeys out of the keypad.
I have to say at this point that I do not much care for the methods of P.I. Engineering, makers of the X-Keys keypads. They've been out for at least half a decade, and they still won't support Linux at all. These are exactly the kinds of toys/tools the geeky Linux crowd might enjoy, and making them a lot more open would gain more customers from that camp.
As it stands, I'm driven away. I won't consider another of their products, and not just because they're unsupported on Linux, but because they don't even provide simple (easy to provide) tools to let Linux people enable themselves. They just put up a wall, and say "Sorry, you're S.O.L." I'd be thrilled with nothing more than a simple command line utility that lets one program the keys with text strings. Once programmed, the buttons just send standard keyboard commands to any PC, Linux or not. but there was no way (even through wine) to program this through Linux.
I brought it to work to program the above hotkeys in on my Windows box there, but found that though there were installers and things on the P.I. Engineering/X-Keys website, none were an actual install. You need the physical disc in order to install it properly, or XP can't find the drivers. I ran home for the disc at lunch, and after now a 5th full, agonizing reboot (very tedious on my complicated work machine), had the program installed. I'm glad I still have the disc, 5 years later, because I'd be out of luck otherwise. P.I. don't answer any emails (I've sent a few over the years), and there's no help anywhere online for these things. Searching for some of my trouble spots sometimes yielded less than 5 results on Google. Pitiful.

The 5320 keypad is not a simple grid layout. Instead there are grouping with curved corners. The intention is to echo the design of the rest of the phone - it works rather well, and doesn't impact usability. In use the keypad seems fine, as with all small phones it is relatively small, but its got reasonable tactile feedback and the D-Pad is particularly good.

The keypad may turn out to be one of the more debated areas of the N78. The style is reminiscent of the N82, but the rubber finish of the number keys is much more comfortable for long usage periods and there is better tactile feedback.
This is my flushed mounted elk keypad and Insteon Dimmers, obviously I installed them myself and still need the Drywall guy to clean up after me.

Beside myself is just how I felt today/night, and very low on energy. Weak. In fact I felt sick. My body ached all over. I napped after work, showered and called my cousin Brandon. We had a two and a half hour conversation, it felt good to catch up with him and make sure he was doing alright. Him and Japeth were also very close, Brandon living with him for a short while. I had no idea what to photograph and by 11pm I decided to portray where my mind was at. Just plain numb and beside myself. I hope to get someone else over for the next few days to photograph. I really don't feel like photographing myself, all I'm feeling is sadness and grief right now. We are all in need of a little sunshine now...

Shorter version, no numeric keypad. Red Cherry MX switches. It was supposed to have the keys laser engraved, but it came like this instead. Very pleasant to type on. (Kinesis Freestyle in the background).

Make sure the connectors are aligned like this when you insert the PCB in your enclosure. This way the cable orientation will be correct when using monome serial. The usb cable is facing north here.
