Jenners used to be the second oldest independent department store in the United Kingdom, after Austins of Derry, Northern Ireland, and was long family-run, but in recent years brought under the ownership of House of Fraser. It has maintained its original position on Princes Street since 1838 and contains over 100 different departments selling a large variety of goods.
William Hamilton Beattie (who had started work on designing the North British Hotel) was engaged in 1893 as the architect and the store formally opened on Wednesday the 8th March 1895.
It is especially adored for its grand hall and balconied vistas where each level can be viewed from the one above. A marvellous sight indeed and particularly in December when its famous Christmas tree is centrally positioned to span ground to top floor.
Known as the "Harrods of the North" it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by our Queen Elizabeth in 1988. It has retained its name for its entire history.
For the connoisseur of Victorian and Edwardian architecture Jenners is the ultimate shopping haven. Like Harrods in London it's the place to visit if you are in Edinburgh even if just to stock up on shortbread for your totty back home!
I also understand they stock the finest selection of ladies stockings and tights in the UK.

Jenners old department store with its richly carved facade was illuminated green last night as I passed it, wasn't sure why - have seen it red for poppy day, blue for Saint Andrew's Day, pink for breast cancer awareness. Then I saw the news this morning and found out a number of landmark structures around Scotland had been lit up green for the night as part of an environmental awareness campaign. Sorry it isn't too sharp, was on way home from work and didn't have the tripod
A close flyby of one of the Jenner Bald Eagles. The pair of adults that live in this area have provided many of us with hours of enjoyment watching them hunt for lamprey eels and an occasional bird. While not very tolerant of humans on the beaches at the mouth of the Russian River, they seem unperturbed by the usual gaggle of observers on the cliffs above.
