A hike at the Jenner Headlands Preserve. The landscape has some amazing views. I was glad to see some clouds in the sky offering some character to the images. This time of the morning there were some interesting shadows and excellent golden light on the green native grass still populated with wildflowers during late May. It was decided to mute those colors with a black and white render and celebrate the structure of those clouds with the sloping landscape.
The Jenners fire of 24th January 2023 cost the life of a fireman. As a landmark building in the city the fire was big news, thankfully confined to the lower rear of the building.
Tragically though a life was lost (with five injured) and the genuine outpouring of grief has been touching, turning the exterior into a mini shrine. Floral tributes from other fire stations here.

in the mid-summer sunshine.
If you enjoyed watching the 1970's sitcom 'Are You Being Served', then you'll
feel right at home in Jenners. This place has been around for over 100 years
and it's still got the same old-worldy feel about it.
Jenners used to be the second oldest independent department store in the
United Kingdom, after Austins of Derry, Northern Ireland, and was long
family-run, but in recent years brought under the ownership of House of
Fraser. It has maintained its original position on Princes Street since 1838
and contains over 100 different departments selling a large variety of
goods.
William Hamilton Beattie (who had started work on designing the North
British Hotel) was engaged in 1893 as the architect and the store formally
opened on Wednesday the 8th March 1895.
It is especially adored for its grand hall and balconied vistas where each
level can be viewed from the one above. A marvellous sight indeed and
particularly in December when its famous Christmas tree is centrally
positioned to span ground to top floor.
For the connoisseur of Victorian and Edwardian architecture Jenners is the
ultimate shopping haven. Like Harrods in London it's the place to visit if
you are in Edinburgh even if just to stock up on shortbread for your totty!
I also understand they stock the finest selection of ladies stockings and
tights in the UK.

An 1875 CDV of sisters Annie* (1861 - 1942) and Emily Jenner (1863 - 1879) by Johnstone & O'Shannessy of Melbourne, Victoria. These girls were the two eldest out of a large number of children who were born to Caleb Joshua and Eliza Ann (Annie) New, who had married in Victoria in 1860. For some reason this couple made a journey to England soon after their wedding, where their first child Ann New Jenner is recorded as having been born towards the end of 1861 at Lewisham, near London. In 1862 the Jenners returned to Melbourne with their newborn child, disembarking from the ship "Marco Polo" in March of that year. Emily Flora Jenner was born at Kew, Melbourne, in 1863, and died aged only 16 in 1879, four years after this photo was taken. Annie New Jenner married James Milton Tewsley in 1897 and died at Kew in 1942, aged 81.
*There seems to have been a slip of the pen when the name was written on the back of the CDV, and an extra dot that gives the appearance that the name is "Aimie". Victorian records however make clear that this name should be read as "Annie"

It was a great day for hiking at the Jenner Headlands Preserve during late May when the grasses and wildflowers were still looking good. The weather was clear with some clouds offering some excellent visibility along the coast. I enjoyed this vantage of the rolling hillside producing an 'S' curve in my frame. On the crest to the right of the rock is a great vantage of the coastline with a good view of Goat Rock Beach.

I took this picture of Jenners amazing Edinburgh department store back in 2004, and did the selective colour edit to try out a Photoshop technique I saw in a photography magazine.
