The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, is the largest mosque in Africa and the 7th largest in the world. Its minaret is the world's tallest.

Quwwat-ul-Islam was sponsored by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, founder of the Mamluk dynasty. Born a slave in Turkey, Qutb rose to prominence as a general during Muhammed Ghari's invasion of India in the 1180s. After Muhammed's assasination in 1206, Qutb seized the throne and crowned himself Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty, often disparagingly called the "Slave Dynasty" after Qutb's origins. Although the dynasty lasted for only a few centuries, Muslim rule in India endured up to the British occuption in 1858.

 

Qutb was a fanatical Muslim. When his garison occupied Delhi under the command of Muhammed Ghari in 1192, he ordered the destruction of twenty-seven Hindu and Jain temples to furnish building materials for the construction of Delhi's first mosque. Quwwat-ul-Islam, the "Glory of Islam," was hastily erected by the young amir, who conscripted an army of local craftsmen, presumably Hindus, to assemble the structure. The Hindu stonemasons re-used columns from the destroyed temples, but adapting them to use in a mosque proved problematic given Islam's injunction against the use of images in temples. The masons were forced to plaster over the highly sculpted Hindu columns and presumably cover them with geometric designs. However, after centuries of neglect the plaster has fallen away, revealing the original Hindu carvings.

 

The Quwwat-ul-Islam is best known for its tower of victory, celebrating the Muslim conquest of India. It is built of red sandstone, gray quartz, and white marble, but is probably inspired by the iron "Pillar of the Law" that stands on the site. Built in the Mauryan dynasty in the 6th century, it is the only piece of the temple that stands in its original location. Qutb built around it when he constructed the mosque. Although made of iron, it has resisted rust for over 1,500 years, evidence of the Mauryan's superb knowledge of metallurgy.

 

Expansion of the mosque continued after the death of Qutb. His son-in-law Altamash (or Illtutmish) extended the original prayer hall screen by three more arches (image 8). By the time of Altamash the Mamluk empire had stablized enough that the Sultan could replace most of his conscripted Hindu masons with Islamic ones. This explains why the arches added under Altamash are stylistically more Islamic than the ones erected under Qutb's rule.

 

Just to the west of the expanded mosque, Altamash built his own tomb, the first to be erected for the Delhi Sultanate. Despite the presence of Muslim craftsman, the tomb is mostly Hindu in design if not in execution. Much of the superstructure and most of the walls are built of pillaged building material. Altamash's body was laid to rest in a subterranean chamber beneath the tomb.

 

The decline of Quwwat-ul-Islam began during the rule of Ala-ud-din (1296-1316), known to the West as "Alladin". Ala-ud-din at first seemed inclined to patronize the mosque, even adding an enormous new courtyard wall and erecting the base of a huge new minar (tower). However, Ala-ud-dins dreams were so grand that he decided to abandon the Lal Kot (Delhi) capital and move to nearby Siri, whereupon Quwwat-ul-Islam lost its pre-eminence.

Moth Ki Masjid is a mosque located in Delhi, and was built in 1505 by Wazir Miya Bhoiya, Prime Minister during the reign of Sultan Sikander Lodi (1517–26). It was a new type of mosque developed by the Lodi dynasty in the fourth city of the medieval Delhi of the Delhi Sultanate.[1][2][3] The name of the mosque literally translated into English language means ‘Lentil Mosque’ and this name tag ‘Lentil’ has an interesting legend. This mosque was considered a beautiful Dome (Gumbad) structure of the period.[1].

The mosque is now completely enclosed within the modern locality of South Extension Part II, Uday Park and Masjid Moth comprising residential and commercial establishments in the urban setting of South Delhi..

It is famously narrated that when Sultan Sikandar Lodi was on a visit to a mosque in the vicinity of the present location of the Moth Ki Masjid for prayer, he knelt over a grain of moth (a kind of lentil), which had been dropped by a bird. His loyal Prime Minister Wazir Miya Bhoiya, who had accompanied the King, saw the lentil seed and observed that.

A seed so honoured by His majesty must not be thrown away. It must be used in the service of God..

So he took the moth seed and planted it in his garden for further growth. Over the years, the process of repeated planting and replanting of the moth seeds was carried out. In this process, the seeds multiplied several times. The Wazir finally sold the rich harvest and earned good money. With the proceeds of the sale he built the mosque after seeking permission from the Sultan to construct the Mosque.[1] Impressed by the ingenuity of his minister, Sikandar Lodi laid the foundation for building the mosque.

The single-domed Qila-i-Kuna Mosque, built by Sher Shah in 1541 is an excellent example of a pre-Mughal design, and an early example of the extensive use of the pointed arch in the region as seen in its five doorways with the 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. It was designed as a Jami Mosque, or Friday mosque for the Sultan and his courtiers. The prayer hall inside, the single-aisled mosque, measures 51.20m by 14.90m and has five elegant arched prayer niches or mihrabs set in its western wall. Marble in shades of red, white and slate is used for the calligraphic inscriptions on the central iwan, marks a transition from Lodhi to Mughal architecture. At one time, the courtyard had a shallow tank, with a fountain..

A second storey, accessed through staircases from the prayer hall, with a narrow passage running along the rectangular hall, provided space for female courtiers to pray, while the arched doorway on the left wall, framed by ornate jharokas, was reserved for members of the royal family.[18] On a marble slab within the mosque an inscription reads: "As long as there are people on the earth, may this edifice be frequented and people be happy and cheerful in it"..

Today it is the best preserved building in Purana Qila.

The mosque was commissioned by the Tulunid dynasty ruler Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868–884 whose rule was characterized by de facto independence. It was designed by the prominent Egyptian architect, Saiid Ibn Kateb Al-Farghany (Arabic: سعيد بن كاتب الفرغاني), who was an Orthodox Christian, the same engineer who designed the Nilometer. The historian al-Maqrizi lists the mosque's construction start date as 876 AD,[3] and the mosque's original inscription slab identifies the date of completion as AH 265 (878/879).

 

The mosque was constructed on a small hill called Gebel Yashkur, "The Hill of Thanksgiving." One local legend says that it is here that Noah's Ark came to rest after the Deluge, rather than at Mount Ararat.[4]The mosque has been used for several purposes. One such purpose is it was used as a shelter for pilgrims from North Africa to the Hijaz in the 12th century.

El-Harrawi House built in 1731 by Ahmed Ben Youssef El -Serafi is considered to be one of the fine examples of the Islamic houses representing the Ottoman era. It is named after its last owner, Abd El-Rahman El-Harrawi, who was the Hakim (Doctor) of Qasr El-Ayini Medical School.

The house is located in the heart of a well known quarter in Cairo. Behind the Azhar Mosque, in Darb EL-Ahmar area, El-Harrawi is situated between two narrow Haraa (Alleys), Harat Al Madrasa and Zuqaq Al Ayini. Several other Islamic houses and monuments are found in the Darb El-Ahmar surroundings. The house has a common wall with Sitt Wasila house (i.e.Lady Wasila) (17th century). It is adjacent to the house of Zeinab Khatoun (15th, 17th century), and to the Ghannamiah Hall (14th century). Also at a near distance is Al-Ayini Mosque (15th century)

I'll be rebuilding this, replacing the Sand Blue w/Sand Green and the Dark Grey with White, for use atop a structure I'm currently building. You can see how I built it out of four components - a drum/base surmounted by two more hinged rings and then a cap made of slopes, 1x3 plates (mostly), and 1x1 round bricks. The dishes here really don't add anything - I was trying to see if I could make the inside decorated (I haven't solved that yet). The quarter plates do help to hold together the structure somewhat.

In 1646 AD, the brothers Abdul Haq and Lotfi Mohammad Kanani children. Qama to build a house in the Alley Aini Street next to the house Abdul Rahman Hirawi and just a few meters from the Al-Azhar mosque. Where the text indicates the Constitutive the wrapper roof seat this house, that the origin is Haji Abdul Haq and brother Lotfy boys Mohammad Kanani year 1074 AH / 1664 AD and then took ownership of the house to move even signed its key in the hands of el-set Wasela "Khatun girl Abdullah Al Beida Matoukh" The last of the inhabited house and therefore knew her name

Mosque Sheikh is considered a pro mosques Circassian Mamluk era. This mosque is located street Muizz adjacent to the door Zewailah. Established by the pro-Sheikh Abu Al-Nasr ibn Abdullah al-Mahmoudi Jerxa originally a Mamluk prince plum, and that was starting in 818 AH / 1415 AD and ended in 824 AH / 1421 AD. Until the expiry date, the portions of the extensions did not rush to the mosque after its construction, such as dome houses tribal and Sufi Balkhannagah. Maqrizi saying: «It is fortuitous for the whole structure, pillars of His Excellency the witness, and the magnitude of its architecture that the origin of kings Lord of time, the viewer despise it when you watch the throne of Bilqis and Ewan Onoshrooan fractions, and the hopes of Istsgr Badi Palace and the roller Khurnq Ghamdan ..».

 

Behind the door of the old Cairo Zewailah and a few steps away is a huge mosque Bmizntin towers located above the door .. Mosque is a "pro-Sheikh," which is one of the most beautiful and largest mosques in Cairo University .. In a tour inside the mosque close to the beautiful legacy of the Mamluk era of architectural antiques.

The Tomb of Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq at Delhi-Tughluqabad (1325). Built in a fort in an artificial lake, this mausoleum is made of a red sandstone cube, with heavily slanted sides, and a white marble dome on top.
