Al-Ashraf Sayf-ad-Din Barsbay was the ninth Burji Mamluk sultan of Egypt from AD 1422 to 1438. He was Circassian by birth and a former slave of the first Burji Sultan, Barquq.

 

He was responsible for a number of administrative reforms in the Mamluk state, including the consolidation of the sultanate as a military magistrature and securing for Egypt exclusive rights over the Red Sea trade between Yemen and Europe.[1]

 

His Red Sea activity included the final destruction in 1426 of ‘Aydhab, a once important port which had been in decline in the previous century.

 

His mausoleum, which included a madrasa and khanqah, was built in Cairo's Northern Cemetery, and has survived to this day.[2]

This was taken in the very late afternoon/early evening, after the masses of tourists who throng the Alhambra between 9:00 and 5:00 have departed. It was a magical time to tour this beautiful palace with its murmuring fountains.

Most Mughal works were made from red sandstones. Taj Mahal is a unique exception as it was made from white marble. It is an interesting blend of Islamic, Persian and Hindu influence.

Moth Ki Masjid is a mosque located in Delhi, and was built in 1505 by Wazir Miya Bhoiya, Prime Minister during the reign of Sultan Sikander Lodi (1517–26). It was a new type of mosque developed by the Lodi dynasty in the fourth city of the medieval Delhi of the Delhi Sultanate.[1][2][3] The name of the mosque literally translated into English language means ‘Lentil Mosque’ and this name tag ‘Lentil’ has an interesting legend. This mosque was considered a beautiful Dome (Gumbad) structure of the period.[1].

The mosque is now completely enclosed within the modern locality of South Extension Part II, Uday Park and Masjid Moth comprising residential and commercial establishments in the urban setting of South Delhi..

It is famously narrated that when Sultan Sikandar Lodi was on a visit to a mosque in the vicinity of the present location of the Moth Ki Masjid for prayer, he knelt over a grain of moth (a kind of lentil), which had been dropped by a bird. His loyal Prime Minister Wazir Miya Bhoiya, who had accompanied the King, saw the lentil seed and observed that.

A seed so honoured by His majesty must not be thrown away. It must be used in the service of God..

.

So he took the moth seed and planted it in his garden for further growth. Over the years, the process of repeated planting and replanting of the moth seeds was carried out. In this process, the seeds multiplied several times. The Wazir finally sold the rich harvest and earned good money. With the proceeds of the sale he built the mosque after seeking permission from the Sultan to construct the Mosque.[1] Impressed by the ingenuity of his minister, Sikandar Lodi laid the foundation for building the mosque.

Built by Khalif Niyaz-kul, wealthy Bukharan of Turkmen origin C19th century under the rule of the Janid dynasty.

 

Char-Minar is actually a complex of buildings with two functions, ritual and shelter. Originally, part of a complex of a madrasa, which was demolished.The building has no analogs in the architecture of Bukhara, and the inspiration and motives of Niyazkul are unclear.

  

The main edifice is a mosque. In spite of its unusual outward shape, the building has a typical interior for a Central Asian mosque. Owing to the buildings cupola, the room has good acoustic properties and therefore takes on special significance of 'dhikr-hana' – a place for ritualized 'dhikr' ceremonies of Sufi, the liturgy of which often include recitation, singing, and instrumental music.

 

Consequently, for full functioning of madrasa only of classroom and some utility rooms is lacking. However, it was common practice that so-called madrasahs had no lecture rooms or, even if they had, no lectures had been given in them. These madrasahs were employed as student hospices.

 

The towers of Chor Minor are not minarets. Three of them were used for storage, and one has a staircase leading to the top floor.

 

Each of four towers have different deco rational motifs.

 

Some say that elements of decoration reflect the four religions known to Central Asians. One can find elements reminiscent of a cross, a Christian fish motif, and a Buddhist praying-wheel, in addition to Zoroastrian and Islamic motifs.

Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Central Dome Mosques Based on Eight Supports (1569-74). The masterpiece of Sinan, it has a radially symmetrical plan with the four minarets acting as end points, and a huge, central dome rising above eight counterweights. The kulliye had only two madrasas behind the mosque.

Hassan Tower is the minaret of an incomplete mosque in Rabat. The tower was begun in 1193 and was intended to be the largest mosque and minaret in the world. Construction was stopped in 1199 when Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour died.

It is situated in El Nassirrya District, Sayeda Zeinab at the end of a closed-ended alley known as Monge alley. Getting there is directly through a right corridor at top of Komi Street that meets Hassan El Kashef Alley which leads to Monge alley; or through an adjoining alley to the Sabil of Sultan Mustapha which also leads to El Kashef alley.

The Mosque & Sabil-Kuttab of Sulayman Agha El-Silahdar, Al Moez Street, Cairo, Egypt

In 1646 AD, the brothers Abdul Haq and Lotfi Mohammad Kanani children. Qama to build a house in the Alley Aini Street next to the house Abdul Rahman Hirawi and just a few meters from the Al-Azhar mosque. El-Harrawi House built in 1731 by Ahmed Ben Youssef El -Serafi is considered to be one of the fine examples of the Islamic houses representing the Ottoman era. It is named after its last owner, Abd El-Rahman El-Harrawi, who was the Hakim (Doctor) of Qasr El-Ayini Medical School.

The house is located in the heart of a well known quarter in Cairo. Behind the Azhar Mosque, in Darb EL-Ahmar area, El-Harrawi is situated between two narrow Haraa (Alleys), Harat Al Madrasa and Zuqaq Al Ayini. Several other Islamic houses and monuments are found in the Darb El-Ahmar surroundings. The house has a common wall with Sitt Wasila house (i.e.Lady Wasila) (17th century). It is adjacent to the house of Zeinab Khatoun (15th, 17th century), and to the Ghannamiah Hall (14th century). Also at a near distance is Al-Ayini Mosque (15th century)

The single-domed Qila-i-Kuna Mosque, built by Sher Shah in 1541 is an excellent example of a pre-Mughal design, and an early example of the extensive use of the pointed arch in the region as seen in its five doorways with the 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. It was designed as a Jami Mosque, or Friday mosque for the Sultan and his courtiers. The prayer hall inside, the single-aisled mosque, measures 51.20m by 14.90m and has five elegant arched prayer niches or mihrabs set in its western wall. Marble in shades of red, white and slate is used for the calligraphic inscriptions on the central iwan, marks a transition from Lodhi to Mughal architecture. At one time, the courtyard had a shallow tank, with a fountain..

A second storey, accessed through staircases from the prayer hall, with a narrow passage running along the rectangular hall, provided space for female courtiers to pray, while the arched doorway on the left wall, framed by ornate jharokas, was reserved for members of the royal family.[18] On a marble slab within the mosque an inscription reads: "As long as there are people on the earth, may this edifice be frequented and people be happy and cheerful in it"..

Today it is the best preserved building in Purana Qila.

An interesting mix of style ranging from Gothic to Islamic architecture,

Its tower (La Giralda) used to be a minaret(Almohad Dynasty ) and at nearly a hundred meters was the tallest tower in its time.
