I will be away from Flickr for the next week while attending "The Wings Over the Rockies Festival" in Invermere BC.

Glenn Parker and I went to Grandin Pond in St. Albert where there are great opportunities to catch close looks at Horned Grebes and several other waterfowl species.

I added an archive shot of an Eared Grebe for comparison in the comment box below. The golden-coloured feathers on the side of the head of the Eared Grebe are more wispy and do not form the "horns" as they do in the Horned Grebe. The black feathers on the forehead of the Eared Grebe are often raised forming a crest. The neck of the Eared grebe is black, while the neck of the Horned Grebe is the same rufous colour of the flanks of both species. The tip of the bill of the Horned Grebe is white. The bill of the Eared Grebe is all black.

Eared Grebes also tend to nest in large colonies. Horned Grebes are quite territorial and defend their nesting sites.

I have also added shots of a preening female Gadwall and Mallard. Female Mallards and Gadwalls look similar at first glance. The shots below show the difference in the wing speculum of each. Female Gadwalls do not have the iridescent blue that the female Mallard shows.

The bill colour of the female Gadwall is also consistently orange with a dark stripe on top and is thinner than a Mallard bill which can be more variable in terms of colour distribution.

Mt Swansea rises above the Columbia Valley village of Invermere, BC in the Canadian Rockies. It is beautifully developed for hiking and mountain biking, and the summit is used for launching hang gliders as well. At the top is a strange structure which houses a weather station. While there was little snow in the valley, at the summit the snow was still quite deep, but it still early March after all.

This is a lifer bird. I was hoping to catch one during my trip to Invermere.

The Long-billed Curlew is the largest shorebird in North America. In Canada it is found in isolated populations in south and central British Columbia, southern Alberta, and southwestern Saskatchewan.

"Remember when the weather was just a matter of small talk, or a cool lyric for a Cole Porter song, “Too Darn Hot,” or a great double entendre title for a Billy Wilder comedy, “Some Like It Hot”? Now, the scariest thing on TV is the Weather Channel." — Maureen Dowd, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary and author. Quote is from a New York Times piece on climate change.

We were blessed with gorgeous sunshine for one of our days near Invermere, BC. We hiked the Old Coach Trail, then rented a kayak and explored the Columbia River north of Invermere.

Red-eyed Vireo Adult

I will be away from Flickr for a few days. I am going to Invermere, BC to visit with friends for a few days. I hope I come back with a lot of different bird images. Happy summer days to all.

The young Vireos are all over the parks I walk here and they are learning how to eat the Dogwood berries and Saskatoon berries. They still beg for food from their parents and have a kind of rasping, insistent call to stimulate the parents to bring food. They are all over the bush at various height levels which makes it easier to catch a shot of an adult as it brings food to one closer to eye level. This is a great time of year to capture Vireos because the Dogwoods are low shrubs and the berries are ripe now. Vireos typically sing from higher in the tree tops. I cropped this one to eliminate the out of focus twig that covered the tail.

This is the red-shafted variety which we don’t see often in central Alberta. The Yellow-shafted variety is much more common here.

We're taking a well-deserved break on the 'warm side' of the Rockies in British Columbia, near places like Invermere, Fairmont Hot Springs, and Radium Hot Springs. Couldn't resist a little hike, though... lots of wildflowers and wonderful views.

We were very surprised to see this lovely British bus parked across the street from our favourite coffee stop in Invermere...

I am posting all of my favorite shots from my trip to Invermere. I usually don’t post so many shots all at once, but I want to get them in my photostream. If you care to comment, a comment about the series or a particular shot works for me. Flickr should be fun, not tedious. I will catch up on my contact’s recent shots over the next couple of days.

White Swan Lake BC. August, 2009.

It wasn't our initial plan to summit this stunning mountain. In fact, we only learned of it the day before we ventured out to it after finding out that the area around our first choice had been closed. What a lucky break for us! It was quite the adventure, with 12 km's of rough Forestry Service Road driven on our poor little vehicle, then 16.7 km's return distance walking and 1472 m's of total elevation gain. It was a very hot day, and it took 10 hours to complete, due to some steep scrambling, the time used to cross many snow patches, some precariously positioned, and the many stops to rehydrate.

Road trip Canadian Rockies 2017

Day 13 : Night in Invermere, BC in Copper Resort. Nice hotel and great resting night. Today, I planned on hiking Kindersley Pass / Sinclair Creek loop. During summers and fall days, there is a group restriction for this trail : your hiking group must be at least 4 persons. Since I hike solo, I went to the trailhead and waited for a car to stop. I almost waited 2 hours drinking my coffee when 2 cars stopped. A group of locals and former Parks Canada employees get out and I asked them to join them, and they accepted. I spent a wonderful day with great persons. Thanks again Nora, Doug, and their friends! That was an amazing hike!

Paddling north into a smoky sunset during a 2 1/2 day trip from Invermere to Golden.

As this stretch of the river does not stray far from a railway line and a major highway, I did not expect to see much in the way of wildlife. I was quite mistaken to think that. We saw an abundance of beaver, black bears, and bald eagles. It was very impressive. On top of that, the mosquitos were out in force also. For the four of us that went, the mosquitos didn't dampen the experience of the trip - however, I think we'd all recommend a different time of year to paddle through these wetlands!

Trips like these make me dream of carrying on further... on to Washington, Oregon, and the coast!
