With one of the earliest mating seasons here in Nunavut, Ravens have already begun the process of selecting a mate. While many birds are polygamous in their mate selection from year-to-year, common Ravens (C. corax) or Tulugaak in Inuktituk, are monogamous by nature, selecting a mate for life. Corax won't breed until they are between two to four years old, yet they will eagerly participate in the annual Spring games, making the display crowded and amazing to behold.

Mature birds courtship rituals include extremely diverse acrobatic flight performances, showcasing talon grabs, inverted flight; and passing stones, or gifts of food back and forth to any potential mates in the vicinity. The ritual demonstrates their fitness, agility and willingness to cooperate in the rearing of young.

The display gets even more exciting as competing males enter the fray as seen in the image above. They push the envelope for the attention of any female ravens, diving from above or nearby rock cliffs to perform aerial games of 'chicken' with one another.

Ahead is the partnership ritual in which a pair will link up for a week or two long honeymoon, getting to know one another on a more intimate level, before permanently forming a bond.

Towards mid-May and into June, the pairs will have completed the process by building a nest, establishing territory and tending to their freshly laid eggs.

It was so interesting to watch the interaction between this Raven pair. Happy Wing Wednesday!

I haven't been one to take intimate shots of water falls usually but iv really started to like it recently. I took about 200 shots trying to capture different interesting shapes in the water before I walked away with this one. Id appreciate any feedback thanks!
