Weir Lake, on the eastern slope of Table Mountain in the Eastern Sierra range of California is really a small pool along the South Fork of Bishop Creek flowing from South Lake.

At roughly 9500' of elevation, this location is often snow covered by mid-Autumn, though at this time, there was little snow, and plenty of cover. It was nice to experience some colors of fall, having grown up on the East Coast where Autumn is much more vibrant and varied in its hues.

Congrats on Explore!

Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland and has a rich history, which is still evident. Middelburg was founded in the 9th century when the Vikings moved into Europe. In order to protect the island of Walcheren against invaders, a ringfort was built. After the threat of the land invaders was over, the fortress started to benefit from its convenient location on the water and developed into a commercial centre. Since this fortress was the centre (middle) fortress of Walcheren, it was given the name Middelburg.

At the time of the VOC, Middelburg was the second most important town in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. In 200 years' time more than 300 new ships were built in the shipyards. These ships set sail to Asia to trade spices, textiles and porcelain. In the centre of Middelburg you can still find the buildings that recall this golden era. After a bombardment in 1940 where, in the consequential fire, much of the town was lost, Middelburg was rebuilt again in traditional style.

In addition to historical monuments you will also find an abundance of modern architecture. Middelburg is really a town with an individual character. There are intimate squares, lovely little streets, sociable bars and apart from the large chains you can also find many boutiques, galleries and art dealers.

At Pashley Manor Gardens you will discover 11 acres of beautiful borders and vistas – the culmination of a lifetime of passion for gardening, an appetite for beauty and an admiration of the tradition of the English Country garden. These graceful gardens, on the border of Sussex and Kent, are family owned and maintained – visitors often express delight at the attention to detail displayed throughout and the intimate, peaceful atmosphere.

All the ingredients of the English Country Garden are present – sweeping herbaceous borders, ha-ha, well maintained lawns, box hedges, espaliered rose walk, historic walled garden, inspiring kitchen garden, venerable trees and the Grade I listed house as a backdrop. The gardens are a haven for wildlife – bees, butterflies and small birds as well as moor hens, ducks and a black swan. Then, of course, the plants! Borders overflowing with perennials and annuals – the look changing through the seasons, but always abundantly filled, and each garden ‘room’ planted in a different colour theme.

Pashley is also renowned for fantastic displays of tulips, roses and dahlias. Our annual Tulip Festival features more than 48,000 tulips this year! During Special Rose Week over a hundred varieties of rose swathe the walls, climb obelisks and bloom in flower beds. Then in late summer our Dahlia Days event transforms the gardens once more with bountiful, brightly coloured dahlias in every border and pot.

Add to all this a Café and Terrace with excellent garden views, serving delicious homemade lunches, scones and cakes; Sculpture and Art Exhibitions; a Gift Shop with Plant Sales; and a friendly, knowledgeable team waiting to welcome you, and the recipe for a wonderful day out is complete.

Conversation on balcony in the morning light in the Sestiere San Marco, Venice.

In winter there are times when the intimate ambience of Venice appears with the daily lives of their inhabitants. That what I really liked and tried to capture on our last trip to this city in February.

* Et vous, quels livres-photos vous ont inspiré(e) ?

It was frosty, this morning, a little mist on the water. I was out before the sun had risen far enough to touch its surface, and was failing to catch an heron or great white egret - the latter is hidden amongst the reeds out of the left side of this frame. As the sun rose, it lit upon these swans and gulls, while the mist still hung undisturbed about. When I looked at the frame afterwards, I became aware of how quietly intimate this combination of things had been.

Swans, Blenheim Park, Oxon. Pentax K-S1, Pentax Super Takumar 300/4. Remarkably little tweaking in Photoshop.

Third and last image in this short robin series...

These birds may be the hardest working foragers in the bird kingdom. They are the first bird to start singing at dawn, and the last birds to quit their worm-pulling at sundown!

I was on my belly to get this low angle. This perspective allows the viewer a more intimate interaction with the bird, seeing the world as they see it.

Enjoy...
