The festival of lights in Brussels

Bright Brussels, the festival of lights returns to brighten up the capital this winter!

Four evenings and three routes will take you on a journey to discover of some twenty immersive and poetic artistic works. From 10 to 13 February, the Royal Quarter, the European Quarter and the Flagey neighborhood will be illuminated by enchanting light installations. The festival will also feature a fringe programme, including evening events in the museums.

It's become a tradition for the lights of Bright Brussels to warm us up in the dead of winter and, best of all, it's completely free!

( Bright Brussels is a light festival, a fascinating route through the city consisting of a dozen light installations that are artistic, interactive, playful,... and simply captivating. )

bitte ausdrucken und die anderen Lichter rechtzeitig ausmalen. Viel Spaß!

please print and color the other lights in time. Have fun!

This is my first quality, and it’s definitely color interaction for the design principle. I could’ve made it proportion, but there was no one that was next to the Hobbit hole. I thought it would be great to have the yellow of the door and other colors of nature interact. The warm tones make this a very pleasing image and easy on the eyes. The crispness of the picture makes it a great quality image for me to have selected.

This Hubble Space Telescope image of the Hickson Compact Group 31 (HCG 31) of galaxies highlights streams of star-formation as four dwarf galaxies interact. The bright, distorted clump of young blue-white stars (top-right of center) is NGC 1741. Although it appears to be a single galaxy, NGC 1741 is actually a pair of colliding dwarf galaxies. Another dwarf, cigar-shaped galaxy to the pair’s right joins their dance with a thin, blue stream of stars that connects the trio. HGC 31’s fourth member is revealed by a stream of young blue stars that point to the galaxy (bottom-left of center) and indicate its interaction with the other three. The bright object in the center of the image is a star situated between Earth and HCG 31.

Dwarf galaxy encounters are normally seen billions of light-years away, and therefore occurred billions of years ago, but HCG 31 is located some 166 million light-years from Earth, relatively close by cosmic standards. This image emphasizes star-forming regions spurred by the quartet’s gravitational dance. The color blue represents visible blue light and showcases young, hot, blue stars, while the color red represents near-infrared light.

The manatees were of course only interested in the food the kids were holding. The kids were told by the people at Dolphin Discovery they were helping to train the manatees by only giving them lettuce after a whistle blew.

In the truth of how I get the images I just do images of flying objects. I hope they will be art at the end of the day. Or night in the way I work. In the years from 2006 when I fist started this abstract color imagery I have found a way to enjoy looking more deeply at other abstract images. I found only a few abstracts I liked just a few years back. I feel I have grown to see better now then I did then.

Father and son collaboration

Our photographic art is a kinetic motion study, from the results of interacting with my son A.J and his toys.

He was born severely handicapped much like a quadriplegic. On December 17,1998. Our family’s goal has always been to help A.J. use his mind, even though he has minimal use of his body.

A.J. likes to watch lights and movement. One of the few things he can do for himself is to operate a switch that sets in motion lights and various shiny, colorful streamers and toys that swirl above his bed.

One day I took a picture of A.J. with his toys flying out from the big mobile near his bed like swings on a carnival ride. I liked the way the swirling objects and colors looked in the photo.

I wanted to study the motion more and photograph the whirling objects in an artful way, I wanted my son A.J. to be a part of it. After all, he’s the one who inspires me. When A.J. and I work together on our motion artwork, A.J. starts his streamers and objects twirling, I take the photographs.

Activating a tiny switch might not seem like much to some, but it’s all A.J. can do. He controls the direction the mobile will spin, as well as when it starts and stops. The shutter speeds are long, and sometimes, I move the camera and other times I hold it still.

I begin our creation with a Nikon digital camera. Then I use my computer with Photoshop to alter the images into what I feel might be an artistic way. Working with Photoshop, I find the best parts from several images and combine them into the final composite photograph. I consider the finished work to be fine art. The computer is just the vehicle that helps my expressions grow.

I take the photographs and A.J. adds the magic. It’s something this father and son do together. After I’ve taken a few shots, I show him the photos in the back of the camera. When the images are completed, I show him from a laptop. He just looks. He can’t tell me whether or not he likes the images, but he’s always ready to work with me again.

It offers me my only glance into A.J.’s secret world. We’ve built a large collection of images and I hope the motion and color move you as much as they do me.

A.J. inspires me to work harder to understand my life in the areas of art, photography, people, spirituality, and so much more. He truly sets my mind in motion and helps me find the beauty in everyday things.

Speed Zone Off Road 08/04/2023 15h47

The interactive fountains of Cool Down are part of this new sub area of Speed Zone, the off road edition. For children and people who love to get wet.

Speed Zone Off Road

A new family area in Walibi Holland has been opened on Good Friday, April 7, 2023, the start of the new Walibi season; Speed Zone Off Road. Visitors will find a roller coaster, a bicycle mill, interactive fountains, playground equipment, a catering location, toilets and seating areas.

Speed Zone Off Road is all about sandy, unpaved roads where quad bikes are raced. The decoration is quite minimal, with painted corrugated iron and objects that are indirectly related to the theme.

The highlight is Eat My Dust, a 12 meter high family roller coaster from the Italian manufacturer Zamperla. A train, designed as quads, always makes two rounds. The station should represent a garage. The top speed is 40 kilometers per hour.

The same supplier Zamperla was responsible for the interactive bicycle carousel Wind Seekers, whose gondolas are designed as paramotors. Occupants fly upwards when they pedal. You can also play with fountains at the Cooldown water playground. A playground has also been installed with the name Play Area.

The idea is that children can play while parents take a seat on the terrace. A catering point is located in a bright yellow container. Hot and cold drinks, ice creams and hot dogs are on the menu. In addition, toys can be bought. Next to it are toilets, which can be accessed via a classic American Airstream caravan. Smoking is prohibited throughout the area.

Gloucester History Festival 2020:

An unusual insight into Gloucester's history is this series of images created by 3D artist Joe Hill, providing a rather different view of parts of the city's history and folklore.

The Interactive Archaeology event is part of the final weekend of this year's Festival.

Gloucester's an ancient place, and wherever you go in the city centre you're walking over some surprising archaeological remains; city walls, Roman remains and even medieval churches survive beneath the city streets. Here it is brought to life in three-dimensional form as pavement art in Westgate Street, as part of the new Cathedral Quarter project. Joe Hill of Joe and Max 3D is a sought-after artist who has been making holes in the ground come to life all over the world.

"The Idea Box", which is an elaborate and interactive mystery box created for submission to LEGO Ideas, but sadly was rejected due to mixing too many LEGO themes. I also worked tirelessly to perfect this overall concept since last fall, and made several revisions. With that said, I want to conjure up the imagery of the whimsy and innovation from earlier days of LEGO-building before licensed themes and overly complicated sets became the norm.

On the surface, this blue box with multicolored outer design seems like a large LEGO brick, but actually unfolds into four small vignettes to pay tribute to the legendary LEGO Idea Book of 1990: oldinstructions.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/1990-260-1...

The aforementioned book was a publication containing numerous alternate instructions and photos to encourage young builders to think outside the box and use their LEGO pieces to make new creations different than the ones provided in model sets. As a kid in the '90s, I would stare at this book all day and dream about the elaborate creations I could build if I owned enough pieces, and it helped inspire me to be a photographer.

At the time of the 1990 book, there were only four dominant themes in the LEGO System: Space, Town, Castle, and Pirates. This era predated licensed themes like Star Wars or Marvel, and instead was focused on imagination rather than intellectual properties. The front and back of the book contained a blue background with multicolored shapes, and on the front cover there was a sculpture of a group of realistic humanoid LEGO minifigures representing the four themes: a spaceman, a pirate, a medieval knight, and two construction workers. Therefore, the minifigures in my Idea Box are a direct reference to the book's cover.

I began working on this in late 2022, but struggled with the original functionality of the box since I intended for the four side pieces to unfold and fold automatically with the use of a Technic gear train. Essentially I conceptualized and tested a mockup where a central column in the box contained rails, rack gears, and a gear train which rotated the four sides at fixed angles. In the basic tests, this function worked by pushing the central column down (similar to unfolding an umbrella – but upside-down), but when adding deadweight of the vignettes on each side, it created problems for the mechanism. The momentum from leverage of pushing down on the column caused the four sides to fall down rapidly, so to slow it down I added Technic friction pins – but sadly when pulling the column back up, the force was so strong that it ripped the column from the rails, or even jammed the gears. Pulling the four sides manually (with the central column still intact) also didn't work, as all four sides needed to be raised simultaneously, otherwise the central column and and rack gears would get dislodged.

After too many failed attempts, I scrapped the automatic mechanism and instead retooled the project to unfold manually by simply pulling the sides and central lid platform down. This ended up being the most efficient option. The only real design flaws in this project are how the sides are kind of heavy and bulky, and often times they bow out when reassembled back into the box form; this can be seen in closeup photos where the sides look partially open.
