Vaulted ceilings always provide for more room and height to design your ceilings. With T&G ceilings, this interactive space has been designed with class and elegance. Wood is the dominant material in the design and is used well for the furniture, floors and the ceiling. It's also present as the cladding for the central fireplace feature that stands out.

During a break from photographic road trip adventures and editing over the Christmas Holiday's, I occasionally had a peek into the iPhoto library at past wintery scenes and places archived. I seriously didn't know where to start. Our seasonal temperatures in Southern Alberta reached a 100 year record high on Wednesday at 15C. We'll need to import snow very soon. A year ago we were freezing in frigid temperatures and relocating snow banks.
Interact versus Interac was also a reoccurring theme in my head over the holidays. The credit card spending variety versus the hub or rural meeting place, the crumbling rural small town General Store registered from a bygone time. Somewhere near Lemsford/Prelate in Saskatchewan I discovered this memory, a place where strangers were known, deals likely created, and friendly faces comforting. I'm not certain Interac was in the development IT laboratories. But I do believe plenty of Interacting was good medicine.

In 1989, ESA launched the first space mission dedicated to astrometry – the science of charting the sky. The satellite was named Hipparcos , echoing the name of ancient Greek astronomer, Hipparchus, who compiled the oldest known stellar catalogue in the second century BC.
Hipparcos operated for over three years and a catalogue based on its data, released in 1997, had a major impact on many areas of astronomy research.
This catalogue listed 117 955 stars, reporting their positions with unprecedented accuracy, alongside estimates of their distance from us and motions through the Galaxy. It was a huge advance on the best catalogues compiled from ground-based observations, which contained information for just over 8000 stars.
The newly launched ESA Star Mapper visualisation is an exploration of some central aspects of astrometric star catalogues, using data from ESA’s Hipparcos mission.
This interactive experience allows users to delve into this famous dataset, exploring the three-dimensional distribution of almost 60 000 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue. Stars are visualised as a function of their brightness; it is also possible to show their colours, as well as names and parent constellations for the brightest stars.
Users can get a sense of where in the sky stars were located in the past – or will be in the future – based on their motions measured by Hipparcos.
A visualisation of the ‘Hertzsprung-Russell diagram’, a tool used by astronomers to study the evolution of stars, is provided as well.
The next great breakthrough in this field will come with ESA’s Gaia mission, launched in 2013. Gaia will make a census of more than a billion stars – roughly 1% of the content of our Galaxy – of such superb precision and detail that it will revolutionise astronomy again.

Crown Fountain is an interactive work of public art and video sculpture featured in Chicago's Millennium Park. Water is turned off at winter but led displays are still interactive.

The 36-inch Yapp Reflector; Aperture 910mm, 4.57m focal length, f/15.
The Yapp 36-inch reflecting telescope situated in Dome B of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux Castle, is open to the public during the day. Built in 1932 by Grubb Parsons of Newcastle-upon Tyne at a cost of about £15,000 (including the dome), the 36-inch reflector was a gift from Mr William Yapp, a prominent industrialist. The telescope was moved to Herstmonceux in 1958 after 21 years of service in Greenwich, where it had been the largest working telescope.
There is a large concave mirror - the primary mirror - at the bottom of the telescope, facing upwards. Light from the stars falls onto this large mirror and is bounced back up the tube where a smaller mirror near the top reflects this light back through the a hole in the centre of the main mirror. The primary mirror aperture measures 91cm with a focal length of 4.6m and a cassegrain focus of f/15.
This telescope was used for astronomical research - mainly stellar spectroscopy and photometry - and later as a test bed for equipment developed for use elsewhere, particularly the Isaac Newton telescope, installed at Herstmonceux in 1967. Astronomers used this telescope mainly to find out about individual stars.
The Royal Observatory was founded by King Charles II at Greenwich in 1675. Observing conditions at Greenwich deteriorated following the urban growth of London, and plans were made in the early 20th century to relocate the observatory to a rural location with clearer, darker skies. Herstmonceux Castle and estate were put up for sale by their private owners and were sold in 1946 to the Admiralty, which then operated the Royal Observatory on behalf of the British government. The relocation of the observatory took place over a decade, and was complete by 1957. A number of new buildings were erected in the castle grounds. The institution at Herstmonceux Castle was known as the Royal Greenwich Observatory, where it remained until 1988, when the observatory relocated to Cambridge.
Several of the telescopes remain but the largest telescope, the 100 inch (254 cm) aperture Isaac Newton Telescope was moved to La Palma, in the Canary Islands, in the 1970s. The estate provides housing for the Equatorial Telescope Buildings, which have been converted for use as an interactive science centre for schoolchildren. The empty dome for the Newton Telescope remains on this site and is a landmark, visible from afar.
