The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, commonly known as Inner Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court (professional associations for barristers and judges) in London. To be called to the Bar and practise as a barrister in England and Wales, an individual must belong to one of these Inns. It is located in the wider Temple area of the capital, near the Royal Courts of Justice, and within the City of London.
The Inn is a professional body that provides legal training, selection, and regulation for members. It is ruled by a governing council called "Parliament", made up of the Masters of the Bench (or "Benchers"), and led by the Treasurer, who is elected to serve a one-year term. The Temple takes its name from the Knights Templar, who originally leased the land to the Temple's inhabitants (Templars) until their abolition in 1312. The Inner Temple was a distinct society from at least 1388, although as with all the Inns of Court its precise date of founding is not known. After a disruptive early period (during which the Temple was almost entirely destroyed in the Peasants' Revolt) it flourished, becoming the second largest Inn during the Elizabethan period (after Gray's Inn).
The Inner Temple expanded during the reigns of James I and Charles I, with 1,700 students admitted between 1600 and 1640. The First English Civil War's outbreak led to a complete suspension of legal education,[1] with the Inns close to being shut down for almost four years. Following the English Restoration the Inner Templars welcomed Charles II back to London personally with a lavish banquet.
After a period of slow decline in the 18th century, the following 100 years saw a restoration of the Temple's fortunes, with buildings constructed or restored, such as the Hall and the Library. Much of this work was destroyed during The Blitz, when the Hall, Temple, Temple Church, and many sets of chambers were devastated. Rebuilding was completed in 1959, and today the Temple is a flourishing and active Inn of Court, with over 8,000 members.
The original Inner Temple Hall is the Hall or refectory of the original Knights Templar building on the site, and has been dated to the 8th century. It was extensively repaired in 1606 and 1629, but was still in poor condition in 1816. Despite this, little was done at that time but replacing the timbers which had gone rotten and patching the crumbling walls with brick.[65] As a result of the poor condition and the increasing numbers of barristers, it was demolished in 1868.[66]
Its replacement was a larger hall in the Gothic style, designed by Sydney Smirke, which was opened on 14 May 1870 by Princess Louise. The new Hall was 94 feet long, 41 feet wide and 40 feet high, with glass windows featuring the coats of arms of noted Treasurers from 1506 onwards running around the room.[67] There were two doors, one to the south and one to the north, which are said by William Dugdale to be the remnants of a "great carved screen" erected in 1574.[68]

The Hall was destroyed during the Second World War, and the foundation stone for the new hall was laid by Queen Elizabeth in 1952.[47] The building was designed by Hubert Worthington and opened in 1955 as part of a complex involving the Hall, Library and Benchers' Chambers.

Looking over the rock-cut ditch into the inner ward of Barnard Castle, with the Headlam Tower on the left.
Barnard Castle stands high on cliffs above the River Tees in County Durham, an important defensive fortification against the nearby Scots and a symbol of power for the resident barons and lords.
The castle was first built by the de Balliol family, with Guy starting construction between 1095 and 1125 and his nephew Bernard – and his son Bernard II – developing and expanding the castle.
It was besieged by the Scots in the early 13th century and passed through several sets of hands before Richard, Duke of Gloucester – later Richard III – took possession of it during the War of the Roses in 1477. His board emblem is still visible carved in the inner ward.
The castle was extended and improved over the following centuries but was abandoned by then owner Sir Henry Vane in 1626, falling into ruin thereafter.
It is now run by English Heritage.

i can hear her, orphan
in tatters, hireling in rubble and rock
humming with the wind in empty
tin cans and barren skies - holding
her small black flag rilled with
lack and longing up into
the chill-wind of a new
language, a new light
her hunger her shoes her home her absence
her beduoin knees
something lost
something to be found
her snakepath
her road
her voice, her

Edfu, Egypt -- The inner temple at Edfu is surrounded by tall hallways and outer chambers. Edfu temple is relatively new by Egyptian standards, having been built during the Ptolemaic dynasties in the period 237 to 57 BC. Because it was built by the last Egyptian pharonic dynasties, it was not canibalized by successor dynasties and so is well preserved, still having complete walls and roof surrounding the inner, central temple area dedicated to the Falcon god Horus.
