Shrine of the Magi

The Shrine of the Magi is the largest, most artistically significant, and, in terms of its content, most ambitious reliquary of the Middle Ages. The relics were brought to Cologne from Milan in 1164. From about 1190 to 1220 a number of artisans worked on the shrine in the workshop of the goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun and in workshops in Cologne and along the river Meuse that continued his work. Ornamentation on the shrine includes gold- and silver-embossed, fire-gilded figures, filigree panels set with precious and semi-precious stones, intaglios, and cameos, and columns, arches and profiles trimmed with enamels. The images depicted on the shrine include scenes from the history of salvation from the dawning of time to the Last Judgment. Although the shrine was shortened by one axis after being hidden from French revolutionary troops in 1794, it was largely restored to its original shape during the most recent period of restoration, which lasted from 1961 to 1973. The intention in the Middle Ages was that the shrine would be placed in the crossing. Today, however, it rises above the medieval high altar at the back of the inner choir, making this area the main focus of the Gothic cathedral, which was built as a stone reliquary for this precious shrine.

When Emperor Barbarossa besieged the city of Milan in 1161, the decent and brave mayor who had led the opposition became a particular thorn in the Emperor’s side. The Emperor swore that he would have him hanged as soon as the city was attacked. During this time the Earl Rainald von Dassel, also Archbishop of Cologne and chancellor for the Emperor, discovered through trickery that a Milan convent possessed the relics of the Three Holy Kings. The abbess of this convent, however, was the sister of the mayor. She worked secretly with Rainald in order to protect her brother from the Emperor’s rage. She offered the relics in exchange for the life of the mayor. So after the attack of the city Rainald requested just one reward from his Emperor: to allow the abbess out of the city with whatever she could carry on her shoulders. The unwitting Emperor accepted, although surprised by the small request. He was terribly angry when he discovered that the abbess had carried her brother on her back out of the city. Rainald, however, allowed his true reward, the relics of the Three Holy Kings, to be secretly brought to Cologne and into the Cathedral where they can still be seen today.
Reverence for the Three Holy Kings in Cologne grew steadily. This angered the devil so much that he strove thereafter to destroy the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings. He looked for a heavy stone, aimed through the roof of the Cathedral at the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings and threw the stone downward. God, however, stopped this outrage by letting the shrine move back away towards the wall. Thus the shrine escaped destruction. The stone and the claws of the devil on top of it can still be seen today.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
Photo made at the tempel of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka. I've not seen many photo's of the inner sanctum. Maybe not the best photo by some standards but a great opportunity for me to take a photo at this special place that is rarely displayed to the outside.
There was a very nice and energetic atmosphere.
