Joachim Patinir, vermutlich bei Dinant 1475 - Antwerpen 1480
Landschaft mit dem hl. Hieronymus - Landscape with St. Jerome (1516 - 17)
Museo del Prado, Madrid
Patinir shows St Jerome sitting inside the wooden shack that leans against the rocks in the foreground. As with the Landscape with the Martyrdom of St Catherine in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum), the painter here raises the line of the horizon, leading to an increase in the space devoted to the landscape and the consequent reduction of the sky (although this has been cut down still further, it should be recalled, by the disappearance of the curved upper portion of the picture). Patinir may have taken his inspiration for the features of the landscape from Namur, since the bare outcrops of jagged rock are reminiscent of that region.
The position occupied by the saint on the left of the the left of the panel, together with the rocky outcrops, make this the most dynamically balanced of the painter`s works. It is divided into two parts. On the left and in the foreground to the right is the solitude of nature, representative of the desert to which St Jerome has retired. Further towards the background in the centre and on the right is everyday, earthly activity.
In the Prado picture, he developed the model which had been used by the first Flemish painters of the fifteenth century, from Rogier van der Weyden to Memling, which shows the saint extracting the thorn from the lion`s foot in a cave amidst the solitude of nature. In this way, Patinir incorporated the apocryphal passage on the saint`s life in Jacobus De Voragine`s Golden Legend, who situates this episode outside the monastery of Bethlehem in the presence of the friars, and not when St Jerome is on his own as in the Prado panel. In this, the artist follows both Weyden and Memling, but he departs from them in showing the lion with its mouth open, roaring in pain. If Patinir`s St Jerome at the Prado is compared with the works of the painters who preceded him in following this type of iconography, it can be seen that he stood apart from tradition not only in the absolute prominence accorded to the landscape over the figures, but also in the fact that the saint is not dressed as a cardinal, nor does he have the robes and hat of the cardinalate next to him. Another novelty aspect of the Prado St Jerome, apparently traditional, is the inclusion of the skull resting against the rock next to the cross, since this memento mori of Italian origin joined the saint`s iconography when he was represented in his study, the first to do so in Northern painting being Albrecht Durer in his 1514 engraving of St Jerome, one of his Meisterstiche. As he did in his other versions of St Jerome`s penitence in the desert, save for the Karlsruhe panel, Patinir incorporates passages from the story of the lion in Jacobus de Voragine`s Golden Legend, which he distributes around various areas of the picture. Nearly in the centre of the composition, to the right of the rock against which the saint`s shack is leaning, the ass is seen carrying wood in the middle ground. In the company of a monk, it is on its way up to the monastery on the other side. There too is the caravan of camels, shown twice. In accordance with the innovative character of the motifs introduced by Patinir, the Prado panel also includes another passage of the story of the lion as related by Voragine. When the stolen ass is recognized, the lion runs to rejoin it, and the ass does likewise, ignoring its rider and nearly throwing him off.
The analysis of the underlying drawing with the multitude of changes made even at this stage of the creative process, though noticeable above all in the painting phase, allows us to corroborate that the Prado St Jerome was a prototype developed by Patinir on the basis of earlier experiments in the representation of the same subject. Although other artists may have collaborated on the figures in other works by Patinir, this is not the case in the Prado panel, where St Jerome displays the features regarded as typical of the painter and defined by Robert Koch in his monograph on the artist.

Silver City Historic District (Boundary Increase & Amendment)
Silver City, New Mexico
Listed 09/25/2013
Reference Number: 13000767
The town of Silver City includes four main historic districts. The Silver City Historic District (SCHD), representing the core commercial downtown, the earliest and finest residences of prominent settlers, and important public buildings such as the Grant County Courthouse, which was the town's first National Register district listing in 1978 (#375377). The Chihuahua Hill Historic District is located to the south; North Addition to the north; and, Black's Addition to the west-ali adjoining the SCHD. The Big Ditch or San Vicente Arroyo is the site of the original Main Street, which was destroyed by a catastrophic flood in 1895. Today, the Ditch creates a ribbon of green space with sizable trees and parkland that is an amenity to the town, and serves as the eastern boundary of the SCHD. This amendment and small boundary increase includes an extension of the period of significance, which originally ended in 1930, to 1960. The south end of Bullard Street, which includes the Bullard Hotel, the Texas-Louisiana Power Plant, the Silver Liquor Company Warehouse, the Ice Storage Building, and the Home Furniture Building was excluded from the early district listing. However, these resources, which fall within the new period of significance, warrant inclusion based on their location, historic integrity, and strong associations with the railroad boom of Silver City. This last block on the east side of South Bullard is being nominated as a boundary increase to the Silver City Historic District for local significance under Criterion A for Community Planning/Development and Criterion C for Architecture as intact examples of a railroad-era hotel, power plant supplying electricity to the town and nearby communities, and warehouses used for storage of important commodities. These resources reflect Silver City's early twentieth-century growth and reveal the influence that the railroad had on commercial development. The new period of significance also allows the inclusion of many important landmark buildings that date from between 1930 and 1960 and were considered neutral in the original nomination. These historic resources are interwoven with the late nineteenth and early twentieth century building fabric, and reflect the growth experienced in Silver City between the Depression and the years following World War II. The added resources represent evolving taste in design and style, new building technologies such as the abundant use of steel casement windows and even curtain walls, and Silver City's move toward modernization. These resources, too, are eligible for inclusion under Criteria A and C.

Courthouse Sq.
Center, TX (Shelby County)
The 1885 Shelby County Jail echoes the Courthouse in a subdued version of its form and detail. It is a 2-story gabled brick structure with 2-story wings that were added on the east and west facades during the 1930s. The red brick walls of the building have been painted a beige color. The ridge line of the original building runs north-south, and the wings have shed roofs which engage the walls of the original building just beneath the eaves. The north and south gable ends of the original building are bisected by external chimneys that are flanked by segmentally-arched doors and windows. Ornamentation is limited to a molded brick cornice with a single row of dentils, and segmental hood molds over the doors and windows. The added wings have a symmetrical arrangement of simple, double-hung windows. In plan the sheriff's office occupied the south end of the first floor, wit h a cell at the northeast corner and a stair hall on the northwest. Partition walls now divide the Sheriff's office into three separate rooms. The second floor contains the main block of cells. (1)

Due to the increasing Allied threat in 1945, among other things, Kamp Amersfoort was transferred to the Dutch Red Cross. On April 19, 1945, this was officially confirmed by “SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Polizei ‘Schongarth’.
The existing 475 to 500 prisoners were no longer the responsibility of the German occupying forces. On April 20, the guards left the camp. From that moment on the present former prisoners enjoyed their relative freedom. Kamp Amersfoort was at that time a shaky enclave in occupied territory. On May 8, 1945, when British and Canadian soldiers marched into the camp, the liberation was also to the former prisoners a fact.
April 19, 2013
Every year, the transfer to the Dutch Red Cross is commemorated. The memorial - where former prisoners, relatives and interested parties to be present - will take place on the grounds of the memorial of Kamp Amersfoort.

If you increase the ISO enough you end up with a white image. No matter how dark your actual scene was. After brightening my image 16 stops in Lightroom I finally got the totally white image that I expected after just 12 stops of brightening,
If you want to brighten more then 4 to 6 stops in lightroom you need to export and reimport a 16 bit tiff. The tiff export produces a darker image than it should. So the real ISO of the photos is a bit less than the calculated one.
Since I started with a 12 bit raw file from my Canon 350D I should have ended up with a totally white image with a post processing for ISO 6,553,600. But lightroom screwed up the tiff exports and darkened the image during this step.

I went to a NO2ID meeting on Thursday, July 28. I have never seen quite so many cops in one place. And, curiously enough, the only ones not wandering around, fingering their guns, were stop-and-searching someone who isn't white. Quelle surprise.
According to the MPAA Theatrical Market Statistics the average ticket price in 2009 was $7.50, a 4.4 percent increase from the previous year. The study goes on to say that, on average, a family of four could go to movies for under $50, but I believe the study only considers ticket prices. These combined with the cost of concessions and gas would definitely put the average price for a family of four over the 50 bucks mark.

Workers rallied and marched through the streets of Boston to demand that minimum wage be increased to $15. Two bills pending on Beacon Hill would raise wages to $15 an hour for about 1,500 service employees at Logan Airport and over 200,000 workers at fast food and "big box" retail chain outlets across the state. Low-wage employees including airport workers, adjunct professors and home care workers turned out to show their solidarity with fast-food workers. The "Fight for $15" campaign is being backed by the Service Employees International Union and began in late 2012, with striking fast-food workers in New York City. Since then, the growing demonstrations have helped make hourly pay a major political issue. Organizers said strikes and protests were planned for cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.
Like many other villages in the West Riding, Denholme saw a big increase in population in the 1800’s. People were attracted to the area because of the establishment of a textile mill build by the Foster family, and also the building of local reservoirs and the new railway. They came seeking employment and some settled in the housing built by the mill owners. Many had belonged to a church or chapel in the area in which they had previously lived and they brought with them a desire to continue worshipping at their chose denomination. Within a very short period of time, the later half of the 1800’s, six new chapels and an Anglican church were built in this small village. Four Methodist chapels, a Baptist Chapel, the Congregational Chapel known as the Independent Chapel, and e Anglican Church of St. Paul’s.
Out of all the buildings of that period there is only one remaining building still in use as a place of worship. The Independent Chapel (Congregational Chapel) on Keighley Road is now home to Denholme Shared Church.
Some of the folk who settled in Denholme belonged to the congregational movement and they originally travelled to Kipping Chapel in Thornton to worship. However that must have seemed a long way for them to walk, and they started meeting in what I think were rooms borrowed from the Methodists in the Sunday School at Lodge Gate. In February 1843 a Denholme Congregational Chapel was founded with a membership list of 9 people. Revd James Gregory who was minister at Kipping Chapel was involved in the setting up of the chapel and led the first service at Denholme. An appeal was started for a building, money was raised and in 1844 the foundation stone was laid. Cost of the land purchased was just £100 and the building itself finished and opened on the 11th May 1845 at a cost of £1000. The costs were greatly reduced due to the labours of the congregation, they worked in the mill during the day and laboured on the building during their spare time.
These chapel folk were know as the ‘Independents’ a name which was frequently given to the Congregationalists because they were free from the established church, they governed themselves independently. Hence the name 'Independent Chapel'. The first minister for the chapel was called in 1848 and lived in the manse (Carr House) built in 1848 at a cost of £330. Things seemed initially to be going well, however by the 1860’s things were floundering and Mr John Hill a lay pastor from Allerton came over to preach and help the church in 1868. The congregation were greatly encouraged by his presence and in 1869 numbers had grown again and a Sunday School was built at a cost of £100. During the eight years that Mr Hill was involved, the chapel members grew from 51 to 108, and scholars from 37-216. Mr Hill was nicknamed the ‘Bishop of Denholme’ and his horse the ‘Evangelistic horse’ because they travelled so regularly to this chapel. In the Jubilee Celebration booklet it is estimated that his journeys probably covered a total of 1700 miles. Mr Hill later became Alderman Hill serving for many years in Bradford and doing other good works.
The Jubilee Booklet in 1894 however records number of scholars down to 157, but things much have been going well for the chapel building was extended in 1896. In 1948 dry rot was discovered in the timbers of the roof and after extensive repairs it was re-opened with a dedication service on the 23rd March 1951. In 1972 the Congregational Churches voted to create a new denomination called the United Reformed Church, so the building became Denholme United Reformed Church. In 1986 Denholme URC were approached by the Baptist Church members asking if they would consider the two churches joining together. On the 12th of October 1986 the first joint service was held in the URC building, and subsequently the two churches went on to become Denholme Edge Church, a new name for a new partnership between the URC and Baptists. In 1989 the building was extensively refurbished, the pews removed and the floor levelled. The old Sunday School building was demolished and a new meeting room, toilets and a kitchen added to the chapel building. This was at a cost of over £100,000 raised from grants, monies given from the sale of the Baptist Chapel, and funds raised by the congregation. In March 1990 a special service attended by the Rt Revd Robert Williamson, Bishop of Bradford dedicated the new extension. It was the hope of the present congregation that their ecumenical links would grew even further.
If you are interested in the history of this church – Terry Hanson has written a very full account in his book ‘The Minister in the Hills’ published in 2011, a copy of which can be found in the Denholme library.

The Delaware Donation Performance Improvement Initiative through Gift of Life has increased Delaware’s organ donation rate to the highest in the U.S. For 10 years, the donation rate in Delaware had been relatively static. Secretary Landgraf and the Medical Society of Delaware asked hospitals to be open to improving that rate, and they were. Gift of Life set as a goal moving from a conversion rate of 57% to 65%. In 2015, the rate in Delaware jumped to 66% and for the last quarter of 2015 it was a whopping 79%.
Gift of Life honored those partners on April 29 at a ceremony at the Medical Society of Delaware. Health care systems and other organizations honored were: Bayhealth, Beebe Healthcare, Christiana Care Health System, Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Saint Francis Health, the Medical Society of Delaware, Delaware Academy of Medicine/Delaware Public Health Association, DHSS, Delaware Healthcare Association, Delaware Nurses Association and Delaware Organization of Nurse Leaders.
“You have made a promise to do more and to do it better,” said Christopher Schimpf, hospital services manager for the Gift of Life Donor Program.
What those statistics mean is that Delaware is saving more lives through organ donation and transplants. In 2015, there were 62 donors in Delaware (a rate of 66 donors per million population -- highest in the U.S.) and their donated organs went to 159 transplant recipients. Secretary Landgraf thanked the hospital representatives for “advancing the most precious gift of all, the Gift of Life.”
Delaware has more work to do -- there are almost 650 of our friends and neighbors in the state on the waiting list for a transplant -- but the initiative shows what we can do when we have a plan and carry it out. Gift of Life will be presenting details of Delaware’s clinical initiative this summer at the annual conference of the North American Transplant Coordinators Organization in Orlando.
At the recognition event, attendees heard from an organ recipient, Mary Coyle, a librarian at Downes Elementary in Newark, who has had two separate kidney transplants. She received her first kidney transplant in 1990 and needed a second in 2013. Transplanted kidneys last for about 20 years. By 2012, she said she was losing steam. “I was mentally and physically drained.” In a paired transplant, her husband donated his kidney to someone else, and Mary got one from a man in California who was a match for her.
Attendees also heard from Andrea Haritos, who donated her son Cecil’s organs after he was shot and killed in 2014. She said it was easy to donate her son’s organs because “I didn’t see them.” It was more difficult to decide to donate his eyes and bones, but it is reassuring to know her son’s organs helped four older men to live. “It is such a gift,” she said, encouraging others to become designated donors. “Being a donor at any age is important,” she said.
Thank you to all of the donor families. You truly have given the Gift of Life.

Roughly around 325,000 homes across the US are broken into every year, usually in plain view. Altogether there are about 2.5 million burglaries reported and 66% of those are in homes. Most break-ins happen during the day when people are most likely to be out and about.
There are certain things you can do to protect your home in order not to become a statistic. We’ve rounded up 4 tips to protect your home, your family, and belongings better.
Keep valuables out of sight
It’s not difficult for anyone to just walk up and take a peek through one of your windows and see what you have lying around if you don’t have thick curtains or forgot to close them on your way out. While some items are not really meant to be moved around, like a TV screen, others are easier to move and keep out of view. Laptops, mobiles, all other small devices, purses, and wallets can all be put away when you’re out of the house. Even if your purse or wallet is actually empty and the mobile is old, a burglar wouldn’t know that, and it would just be too tempting in their eyes.
Wire up
It doesn’t matter if you live in a building, a house, or own a shop or any other business, you can use a security system to put your mind at ease. If moving into a new home or looking to sell your old one that’s a good time for when to get a wired security system. Having a wired system can increase the cost of your home when selling, and may also have custom made options that wireless security systems do not always offer.
Don’t provide hiding places
Your landscape, tall trees, and bushes are lovely to sit near and under. They provide nice shade on hot days but they also provide more opportunity for thieves and the likes to hide in. Keep shrubs and trees trimmed, at least trimmed enough that they do not block windows. Besides that, don’t leave items outside. Many people will leave a ladder outside after doing some roof repair, for example. This is inviting a would-be thief to the upper floors of a house where windows might be often unlocked.
Change locks when necessary
Anytime you or someone else loses a key to the house, change the lock. You can never be sure if the key was actually lost or if someone got their hands on it, giving them more than easy access to your home. If you rent out a home, it’s also recommended to change locks after a tenant leaves.
You can never be too safe
There really is no such thing as being too safe when it comes to protecting your home. Be an alert homeowner and find out more ways to protect your property. Always keep all doors, windows and the garage locked. You can ask someone you trust to keep a watchful eye if you have to leave home for an extended period. As we say, better to be safe than sorry.

Today the Project Inception Ceremony was held to launch the project on “Enabling civil society to play a greater role in advancing gender equality and women’s rights”. The project aims to increase the role of the civil society in advancing women’s rights and promote rural women’s economic and social participation. Representatives of government agencies, diplomatic corps, civil society and media took part at the ceremony.
The two-year project will be jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, and Women’s Association for Rational Development. The project is funded by the European Union and UNDP, with a total budget of 444 000 euro.
The new project is based on UNDP’s past experience with promoting rural women’s economic and social participation, and will focus on Sabirabad, Neftchala, Bilasuvar and Baku regions. The project will support the implementation of the CEDAW Convention by assisting women in selected regions of Azerbaijan to become economically and socially active and empowered. The project’s target group will be rural women, youth, local communities, and NGOs dedicated to women’s rights.
The project team will work closely with the government and civil society organizations to provide capacity building for NGOs on national commitments to CEDAW; capacity building for Women Resource Centres; trainings for women in social participation and entrepreneurial skills; and support for women’s business start-ups.

Amidst increased geopolitical tensions, there has been growing concern that terrorist groups, lone wolves or rogue nations might use biological weapons, or any type of CBRN weapon. International reports and studies provide good reason to believe that threats from a deliberate use of CBRN weapons are no longer inconceivable: international counter-terrorism experts consider a possible CBRN weapon attack possible.
Countries in Europe are gradually raising their level of preparedness for the possible event of a CBRN incident that could become a national security problem. The European Commission released in October 2017 its Action Plan to enhance preparedness against CBRN security risks as part of its comprehensive anti-terrorism package.
Sufficient and timely preparedness are essential and should be considered a high priority for the European Union. Europe can improve its coordination and learn best practices from international organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and past experiences in the United States of America.
This seminar provides a platform for a timely discussion and opportunity to exchange views between MEPs, European and international experts and relevant stakeholders, with the aim of taking further European political actions and raise awareness inside the EU institutions and beyond. And hopefully it can work out a satisfactory answer to the main question: is Europe sufficiently prepared?
