Ruins at Runkuraqay, on the Inca Trail in Peru.

Photos from my 4-day Inca Trail trek in the Sacred Valley of Peru. Read my story of the Trail here.

Llajtapata ruins, on the Inca Trail.

Looking back at the cloud covered Mount Veronica (18,641ft, 5,682m) - I kept hoping the clouds would clear and I would get that perfect shot but this was about the best I could do. It really was beautiful, though - and at least it wasn't raining anymore!

The trail rises pretty quickly for awhile here - I thought this part was hard... until Day 2.

Inca Trail Day 1

The Inka Trail got used as a communication system for the Incas to run from one place to another in the humongous Inca Empire which stretched from south Colombia to north of Argentina. There are different Inca trails to hike, but this one is the most famous Inca trail and it will take you from Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, through beautiful landscapes and different archaeological Inca sites.

The Inca ruins of Llaqtapata, which we reached in the morning of day one.

This little boy walked up to me and said "ma ma" and tried to give me a mandarin while i was getting a photo of the mountain behind. I kindly declined his offer of the mandarin and being his mother and gave him 1 Soles.

Our campsite on the second night.

If you enlarge the picture, you will find the ring of Runkurakay in the bottom of the valley.

Oh boy did the Incas love their stairs - these ones they've carved out of a single rock
