This control site is located thousand feet below the ruins. This is the last point before Inca Trail where horses are allowed. Our porters met us here and took over the freight from the horses. The man in the cottage checks tourists' permits, guides' licences and other group documentation. Just in case we asked him about the ruins and - Hurrah! The ban on entering them was only for animals!
This pic isn't great, but it does the job. The porters would run ahead and set up our meal tent, so we always had our meals here. The cooking was actaully pretty good too.
Pampaccahuana is not just a location, it is very special of the kind. During school year kids from all the vicinity walk every day to this small building - the school. It is not specifically primary, or junior, or high school. Just the school. The class is 10-15 pupils of all ages. The teacher is one for all of them. He travels once a week to the school from Cusco, spends 4 nights here and leaves back to Cusco for weekend. For some pupils it takes hours to walk just one way from their house to the school.
