Der Bezirk entstand 2001 mit der Berliner Verwaltungsreform durch Zusammenlegung der bis dahin eigenständigen Bezirke Charlottenburg und Wilmersdorf. Der Bezirk hat auf einer Fläche von 64,7 km² ca. 343 000 Einwohner*Innen.
Berlin ist die Hauptstadt und zugleich ein Land der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Der Stadtstaat Berlin bildet eine Einheitsgemeinde und ist mit über 3,4 Millionen Einwohnern die bevölkerungsreichste und mit knapp 892 Quadratkilometern die flächengrößte Kommune Deutschlands sowie nach Einwohnern die zweitgrößte der Europäischen Union. Der Stadtstaat unterteilt sich in zwölf Bezirke. Neben den Flüssen Spree, Havel und Dahme befinden sich im Stadtgebiet kleinere Fließgewässer sowie zahlreiche Seen und Wälder. Der Name ‚Berlin‘ leitet sich vermutlich von dem slawischen Begriff br’lo bzw. berlo mit der Bedeutung „Sumpf, Morast, feuchte Stelle ab. Der Stadtname ist weder auf den angeblichen Gründer der Stadt, Albrecht den Bären, gestorben bereits 1170, noch auf das Berliner Wappentier zurückzuführen. Es handelt es sich um ein redendes Wappen, mit dem versucht wird, den Stadtnamen in deutscher Interpretation bildlich darzustellen (Berlin = ‚Bär‘). Das Wappentier leitet sich demnach vom Stadtnamen ab, nicht umgekehrt.
