Patterns in ice on the surface of a small flatland creek. I believe these artistic lines were created by snow faeries and elves, because I can't think of any rationale scientific explanation for the genesis of lovely patterns like this.

Report from a photo trip to Lofoten - 43

Hoar frost near Gimsøy on the Lofoten archipelago (Norway).

I'm not 100% sure of the correct name of this optical phenomenon but an internet search would suggest that it is probably an Ice Rainbow, especially as it occurred in conjunction with a halo around the sun. Very happy for someone to correct me though if this is not the case.

Another possibility is a "Circumzenithal Arc" but the colours are in the opposite order.

On May 12 it's ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day. May 12 was chosen as it coincided with the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale became chronically ill in her mid-thirties after returning from the Crimean War; the M.E.-like illness often left her bedridden during the last 50 years of her life.

Many of my our friends here at Flickr suffer with this and other chronic afflictions . For the fifth year in a row the Smile on Saturday challenge has been "BLUE FOR YOU - ME 2023". The challenge is sending positive vibes to not only the people here at Flickr who suffer from that disease, but anyone who is in pain, physically or mentally. Please know we are thinking of you!

Happy Saturday!

When you get 3 inches of rain and then extremely cold weather, it turns your front lawn into a nice layer of ice. Then the sun comes out and the trees shadows make great patterns and the ice sparkles.

This is a close up of Matanuska glacier. The spot directlyunder my camera is any where from 50 - 100 feet of ice. The dark area that looks like dirt is actually about half and inch of silt sitting on top of the glacier below.

. . . Ice creatures come crawling out of Lake Michigan towards the Point Betsie light house! The entire face of the hill here is solid ice from the waves and wind blowing in from the west!

Have a great weekend Facebook, Flickr, and 500px friends!

Let me share some more pictures from the Ice and Snow Festival last Month in Longqing Gorge, about 2 hours north of Beijing, China.

Is this heaven or underworld?

Red afternoon winter sun, one frozen horizon, some rivers and stream were only semi frozen as we had some warmer days above zero.

The bit of water breaks the monotony of the snow on the flat plain.

Not much left here now and that is nice!

A cold day in Echallens, Switzelrand

If you look at the photo I posted yesterday, you can see this section near the center. There was so much to photograph in this area. Many of my recently posted ice photos were taken here, with more to come. It hasn't been very icy in January, but February holds more promise for good ice returning.

We visited this curious ice hotel near Alta town in Norway, but no way to sleep in these cold temperatures!

An ice hotel is a temporary hotel made up of snow and sculpted blocks of ice. Ice hotels are dependent on sub-freezing temperatures, are constructed from ice and snow and typically have to be rebuilt every year. Ice hotels exist in several countries, and they have varying construction styles, services and amenities, the latter of which may include ice bars, restaurants, chapels, saunas and hot tubs.

Sorrisniva Ice Hotel, in the outlying area of Alta, has been rebuilt yearly since 1999. It is Europe’s northernmost ice hotel, as it is in the Finnmark region and is approximately 250 km from North Cape. The 2,000 square meter hotel has 30 rooms, including two suites. It is decorated with ice sculptures and ice furnishings, including lighting systems which enhance the different types of crystalline formations. Besides the bedrooms the hotel contains an ice chapel, ice gallery and ice bar where drinks are served in glasses made of ice. The ice sculptures at the hotel change yearly. To stay warm when sleeping, guests use sleeping bags that sit on top of reindeer hides.

More and more of the St. Lawrence River is freezing over. Was able to reach a section of open water with broken ice due to high winds the day before. A lovely sunset under clouds with snow on the forecast soon. Also, ongoing below freezing temperatures will create more ice. A closer view below...
