Film Photography Podcast's Mr. Brown Low ISO film. This was not an easy film to shoot with or develop. ISO 6, and I couldn't find any recipes, so I winged it. And got it a bit wrong.

I tu, has probat a fer VL de KM 0?

A Maiko in all her finery, in particular her gorgeous long Darari obi (だらり帯 ie "dangling" obi) at the back. This long obi is even more spectacular at night when the shiny embossed patterns shimmer as she walks by.

Soft warm light from the interiors seeps out through thin gaps in the wooden lattices, a common characteristic of the night scene in Gion.

A real Maiko in historical Gion, Kyoto. Not those fake ones playing dress-ups in the daytime.

Handheld shot at ISO6,400 and f1.4 as it was rather dark plus shot was taken at a higher shutter-speed to freeze motion at close distance, no noise reduction.

An old shot. I've gotten a lot more proficient with post-processing such shots these days. ISO6,400 without the colors appearing thin and washed out, quite happy with this.

Learning to post-process more competently has a much greater impact on better image quality than blindly chasing after new gear or being inanely obsessed with lens sharpness.

Handheld night shots are challenging, those involving moving subjects even more so hence more fun.

3 months ago I spoke about a possible OM-5 here; www.flickr.com/photos/86145600@N07/51890597694/

It appears that OM Solutions (OMS) is indeed going to announce the OM-5. This should be a non-sports oriented body, probably with the same BSI sensor as the OM-1 but without the additional stacked layer and sophisticated AF. This unstacked BSI sensor should marginally outperform the existing E-M1 Mkiii or E-M5iii non-BSI sensor in real terms without resorting to software trickery. This is plausible as Nikon likely did the same in reverse by adding a stacked layer to their 45mp sensor derived from their D850 and Z7 bodies to produce the Z9.

Nikon went from 12mp (D700 in 2008) to 36mp (D800 in 2012). Will OM-5 be 40mp when the prevailing OM/Olympus cameras have been at 20mp since the E-M1 Mkii launched in 2016?

I could enjoy imaging of the comet, C/2022 E3 ZTF in the weekend, though weather forecast was not fair. There were thin clouds almost anytime at the night, and autoguiding stopped working frequently.

The comet was drifting fast toward north northwest in Bootes. Dust coma was bright. I could recognize it easily as relatively big white blob through my binoculars, Canon 10x42 L IS WP. I could not find tails in the view. Dust tail was very wide fan-shaped toward north. Bluish green ion halo was round and beautiful. The diameter looked a bit wider toward east. Ion tail was faint and long showing several stream lines toward northwest. North is up, and east is to the left.

This frame is a preliminary version only with longer exposure set.

Kodak E-4 color slide dupe finally getting great results at ISO 6! E-4 slides crossed as negatives in C-22 chemistry. 45 year old color film of dubious heritage and this is by far the best I've been able to get in 5 or 6 attempts. Some loss of detail due to no first developer I think, but great 1970s colors and consistently developed frames. C-22 developer for 16 minutes (up from 13), 20 second rinse, 4 minute stop, 20 second rinse, 4 minute hardener, 4 minute wash, 10 minute bleach (up from 6), 4 minute wash, 8 minute ammonium thiosulfate fix (up from 6 minutes). 8 minute final rinse/wash a long night to dry. All of this was under CONSTANT agitation instead of the usual regime and I think that really helped thin the negative and even-out the development. Temperatures mostly held at 75 degrees F. This has been a bit of an adventure to get decent color out of this film and it's pretty cool to bring some life back to this film, esp slide dupe that has no business seeing the light of day!

This film expired in May 1991. It's Kodak internegative film which is designed for making colour negatives from slides. It's tungsten balanced and is very low contrast. I exposed these at ISO6 and I think they are underexposed but the slowest shutter speed on my Speed Graphic is 1/30.

I could enjoy imaging of the comet twelve days after the perihelion passage on April 21, 2024.

This frame was composited with many frames.

Here is one shot frame: www.flickr.com/photos/hiroc/53712706316

It was low in the west before the end of twilight, and imaging session was during twilight. Thanks to the location in southern hemisphere and dry atmosphere, imaging was not difficult.

The site was near Paranal Observatory, and there came yellow laser beams from the observatory in the frame as you see. Satellites were nuisance as always.

The comet was drifting toward southeast in Taurus. It was still bright. Dust coma was round and small, though it was saturated on this frame. Dust tail was wide toward northeast. Greenish ion halo was not dominant. Bluish ion tail was long with kinks toward east southeast beyond the edge of the frame. Ion tail looked yellowish with swirls partly, indicating it including sodium ion. It means that the temperature around the area was higher than 3,000K at the date.
