The Broad-billed Hummingbird, Cynanthus latirostris, is a medium-sized hummingbird around 4" long. The breeding habitat is in arid scrub of southeastern Arizona (the Madrean sky islands of Arizona, extreme southwestern New Mexico and northern Sonora) in the southwestern United States to southwestern Mexico. This hummingbird is partially migratory, retreating from northernmost areas during the winter.
Not sure exactly what kind of hummingbird this is but it was taken in northwest Montana. Not far from my old house.

Archilochus colubris, the ruby throated hummingbird, female. She's giving me a nice pose on a feeder, which is about 15-20 feet away from me.
At times there are 5 or 6 feeding and 2 or 3 trying to land. I'm feeding these little democrats a cup and a half of sugar a day. They haven't worked at a flower all summer!
We only have three or four hummingbirds this year and are wondering why the decline in population. Last year we had at least a dozen. Any feedback would be welcome.
You'd be surprised how often hummingbirds scratch themselve's when perched. I put a feeder near a good spot for photos, and then go out in the evening and hang out nearby. They get fairly tame after a bit, and a few that come around regularly will allow a glimpse into their more personal side.
