Hummingbird having a snack.

I tried to estimate the shutter speed required. A fast wingbeat on an average bird is 53 per second. So anything over 1/100 should have done it. Research tells me it's an Anna's or Costa's hummingbird, but I am not an expert, and the pictures are difficult to compare. I will do more research.

I sat on a deck for an hour, just waiting. At one point prior to my arrival, there were 6 birds at one feeder. I wasn't so lucky, but was lucky enough to catch this (probably female) bird.

Submitted for Photo Friday. High Speed.

Hummingbirds are capable of speeds of up to 100 km/h. When hovering or in flight, they beat their wings 55 to 75 times a second.

Love these guys. We stood (and eventually got chairs) at the window for an hour to catch these guys in action. This is the male, but the female was around, too.

Calliope Hummingbird - Stellula calliope

There is no colouring around the neck, so probably not a Rufous Hummingbird.

"The smallest bird in North America north of Mexico, the Calliope Hummingbird inhabits mountain areas of the northwestern United States. It is the smallest long-distance avian migrant in the world, spending its winters in Mexico."

I think these are all Anna's Hummingbirds, this being one of two females. We have three regulars at the feeder, who are now slurping their way through a feeder-full of sugar water in around five days.

A male Anna's hummingbird, puffed up because another male is near.

Still a couple of "birds" left at the park.

This very small hummingbird has red coloring around the neck. Caught in mid-flight, he's heading to the nectar feeder.

This is a cropped portion of a larger image.
