The Sword-billed Hummingbird is a species from South America and has the longest bill of any Trochilidae species, I almost forgot to press the shutter on the camera when I first saw it.. Usually found in forests at high elevations, I believe this one to be a female.
From Cornell Lab's "All About Birds" : "The largest hummingbird found north of Mexico, the Blue-throated Hummingbird is also one of the most vocal hummingbird species, and its high-pitched, monotonous peeps are a signature sound of summer. They are found in streamside habitats in mountain canyons, as far north as southeastern Arizona, where they are frequent visitors to feeders and usually the dominant hummingbird species."
We found this one near Portal, Arizona.

This hummingbird is approaching what we call the "basement," one of the many branches they enjoy perching on.
We have quite a few hummingbirds in our neighborhood and it's always fun watching them zip around and chase each other as they battle for rights to the best food source. This Anna's Hummingbird was coming in for a drink when we snapped this photo.

Although I will never divulge how much time I have invested in trying to capture the elusive hummingbird. They are so fast and really tricky to capture! I still have not gotten "the shot" I want...so my quest is still on.

Another first for me on the Arizona trip. This truly is a Magnificent Hummer, very vivid and Large.
I only wish my image was a little better.

These hummingbirds stop in the Davis Mountains of far west Texas on their way south. This appears to be a female.

Hummingbirds have returned. They're not skirmishing around the feeder this year (so far). Feeding peacefully. Wonder what the difference is.
This was one of our target species on the Arizona Monsoon Birds trip this July, and with patience we ended up doing well. This is the largest hummingbird in the ABA area and is quite impressive to see.
Will be heading back to hummingbird paradise (Ecuador) this year, would you like to join me? :)

After a lull in hummingbird activity in the area for several weeks, I'm thrilled to be hosting three juvenile Anna's hummingbird in my yard. They have been the sweetest joy to watch grow and thrive. They change so quickly & are now busy practicing territorial displays with each other, an adult Rufous Hummingbird male & and an adult Anna's male.
