Usually buzzing around like crazy this one was posting as a model for a while.

Happy Sunday everybody

I'm still on a high having now found FIVE different hummingbird hawkmoth caterpillars at St Cyrus nature reserve. When I found the first one, I had my MP-E 65mm lens with me (so could fit only a small portion of the caterpillar in the frame), but I was able to return and re-find this one to get a full body shot with my regular macro lens.

I've found three final instars (4th and 6th August) and two smaller instars (maybe 2nd/3rd instars; 8th August). I soooo hope to see some moths on the reserve too.

Hummingbird photo in my back yard. I'm not sure if I have all of the hummingbirds in the 6 photos that I uploaded correctly identified. If not, let me know. IMG_2626

Anna's hummingbird loving the lilac.

Fun day at the fountain with a few good birds and a few great friends. Not sure how that drip happened, so I guess it was magic!

Thank you so much for your very kind comments and favorites. Thanks to Explore for allowing me to share with you.

The Hummingbird population seems to be increasing in the backyard. Every one has their own branch to peruse the landscape. And this Allen's Hummingbird is keeping a close watch on the Bottlebrush.

Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax Lucifer)

One of my target birds in my Arizona trip was this Lucifer Hummingbird. There are not many pairs that occur in the United States and those that do are in the extreme southern parts of AZ, NM and TX.

Colibri cyanotus (Lesser violetear / Orejivioláceo menor)

The lesser violetear (Colibri cyanotus), also known as the mountain violet-ear, is a medium-sized, metallic green hummingbird species commonly found in forested areas from Costa Rica to northern South America. This species and the Mexican violetear were formerly considered as conspecific and named the 'green violetear'.

The lesser violetear breeds from the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama; mountains of northern Venezuela, and the Andes from western Venezuela to western Bolivia. It is recorded mostly between altitudes of 1,200 to 2,300 m (3,900 to 7,500 ft). It generally prefers more humid and high-altitude areas, such as cloud forests.

The lesser violetear has four sub-species:

C. c. cabanidis (Heine), 1863) - Costa Rica, western Panama

C. c. cyanotus (Bourcier, 1843) - Colombia, northwestern Venezuela, Ecuador

C. c. kerdeli Aveledo & Perez, 1991 - northeastern Venezuela

C. c. crissalis Todd, 1942 - Peru and Bolivia

Hummingbird -

Hummingbirds are among the smallest of birds, most measuring 3–5 inches, and the 5-cm bee hummingbird, weighing less than a U.S. penny! All hummingbirds depend on flower nectar to fuel their high metabolisms.

Hope you enjoyed my view!

Hummingbirds have returned. They're not skirmishing around the feeder this year (so far). Feeding peacefully. Wonder what the difference is.
